Chapter 7 Vacation Fling

Chapter 7 Vacation Fling

\[Rue’s POV\]

Mr. Owens’ back that my body is nicely pressed against is warm, and the shoulder that my head rests on is firm and muscular, like I always imagined it to be. However, even when we are this close, I know that he is still far away from me.

Even when he is right here in front of me, I can’t reach out and grab him.

“Rue.” The man in question's voice drifts toward me, snapping me out of my sinful thoughts and back to the reality that is meant for me.

“Yeah?” I ask, wondering what he wanted.

“You went to school for teaching, right?”

“That’s right,” I confirm.

Nodding, he grows quiet, and I wonder if he was just trying to make light conversation and I just failed to produce what he wanted of me.

“Did you have a reason for it?” He asks after a long pause. “I honestly didn’t take you for the type.”

“Because I was so quiet and passive in high school?” I murmur, feeling a stab in my heart. “People change, you know.”

“No,” he says quickly. “That wasn’t what I meant. I just…”

“It’s fine,” I sigh, not wanting him to be uncomfortable because of me. “I decided to become a teacher because someone inspired me.”

Growing quiet, I find myself wondering if he would catch onto the fact he was the one who inspired me, but when he just nods, I figure maybe he didn’t.

“That person must have been pretty awesome.” He chuckles. “But I guess that is every teacher’s goal aside from helping children learn and grow.”

“He was,” I agree. “And he left such an impression on me that not a day went by that I didn’t think of him. I guess you could say that I developed a childish crush on him, and because of that, I wanted to meet him again."

Now that I’ve opened the gate about my reasoning for wanting to teach, I can’t close it, and I fear that my true motive will slip out of me, but before it can, my mother appears, and my and Mr. Owens’ moment together is over.

“Rue!” My mother gasps, rushing forward while Mr. Owens gently sets me on my feet. “Are you okay? Are you hurt anywhere?”

“I’m fine,” I sigh, but then remember that I faked an injury. “My ankle just hurts because I fell.”

“You fell!” My mother gasps, eyes widening. “Oh no, let me see!”

She doesn’t wait for a response before she is fussing over me, and when she spots my scraped knees, she wraps an arm around my waist.

“Come on,” she announces, starting to lead me back toward our resort. “Let’s get you patched up, and if your ankle still hurts in the morning, we will call in a doctor.”

“I doubt that will be necessary.” I tell her, hating that I even lied in the first place. “I just need some food, a shower, and some sleep.”

She doesn’t push the subject after that, and when we reach our destination, I quickly untangle myself from her and head to my room and then the shower.

After washing up and changing, I head back into my room, where I find a single tray of food and a note waiting for me.

Be sure to eat it all and then sleep tightly.

Love you,

Mom.

The words on the page I’m holding make me feel shitty as I realize that I was actually still somehow hoping that the man who made my mother so happy and complete would fall for me.

I was such an awful daughter, and yet… I just couldn’t stop the attraction I felt when he was in front of me.

“I’m sorry, Mom.” I whisper, grabbing a sandwich off the tray and taking a bite. “I will stop hoping for something that would absolutely ruin you, so please forgive me for being so sinful this evening.”

The next morning when I wake up, I find the living room empty, and honestly, I feel like it is a good thing.

I could only hope that Mr. Owens and my mother were out doing their own thing, and if they were, then I would do mine too.

That’s why after eating a quick breakfast and changing into the bikini that I bought with my mother the previous day, I head down to the pool while deciding that maybe I would take my mother up on her suggestion and find myself a little vacation fling.

You never knew; maybe if I met someone and we hit it off, I would be able to forget my childish first love and move on, but before I can even test that theory, I find that my mother and Mr. Owens had the same idea as me.

Hissing in shock, I watch as my mother hangs all over Mr. Owens's tanned and well-toned body while memories of resting against that same body return to me.

“Dammit,” I hiss, wondering if I should just leave, but before I can, my mother spots me and lifts a hand.

“Honey!” She calls while I plaster a smile on my face. “What a coincidence!”

“Yes,” I agree, knowing that I was trapped. “I was hoping to get some sun and catch up on my reading.”

As I speak, I lift the book I’m holding while secretly taking in Mr. Owens’ perfect, sexy body.

“So, don’t mind me.”

Finished speaking, I head to a lounge chair that I throw my towel over and then get comfortable.

Opening my book, I try to get into the words on the page in front of me, but every time I peek just past them, I find Mr. Owens, and my eyes just lock onto him, and I find myself getting distracted.

“Stop it,” I growl, throwing my book down after rereading the same page for the fourth time. “You can’t act like this with a man who is to become your family!”

That was it. I needed to do something. I needed to find a way to distract myself and move on, and the only way to do such a thing was to implement my plan of finding a vacation fling.

I was certain that it wouldn’t be too hard to find a guy who would be willing to spend the rest of my vacation with me.

Since joining the gym and fixing my appearance, I was approached by many men, but because my mind was so preoccupied with Mr. Owens, I wasn’t willing to give them a chance. However, now was completely different since he was married.

“Let’s find a target,” I murmur, starting to scope out the possible candidates that are lounging around me, and when I find one that I think will be the perfect fit, I stand and then start to move.
