Chapter 69: Rage
Elaine walked hastily through the halls as she wanted to find Edgar snd she wanted to find him fast, she had a lot to say and so many things to be clarified on.
She continued walking as fast as possible and he sighted her feom a distance were he stood with the generals.
“Elaine” he called out but she only stopped but never turned to look at him in the eye because she didn’t want to end up saying what was on her mind to his face in front of so many people.
“You’re in trouble my Lord” one of the generals said.
“What do you mean by that?” Edgar said totally unaware of what they were talking about.
“When a woman acts like that, she is definitely mad at you about something” the general replied.
“And what if she’s angry about something else” Edgar asked curiously.
“Then she would’ve answered your call” another general said and Edgar knew that what he was saying made so much sense.
“Go now my Lord, the longer you stay here the more risk you put yourself into” the general said and Edgar followed behind her closely.
They got to their room and Edgar gently closed the door behind him, Elaine stood facing the window not saying a single word or even speaking to him.
“What’s wrong Elaine?” He said as he approached her slowly and she turned to face him, when he tried to hold her she took few steps backward.
"Edgar, how could you keep Jon imprisoned for all this time? They were only trying to help us!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with anger.
"They betrayed us, Elaine! They were working with Skylar, our sworn enemy. What if it is a scheme to infiltrate our defenses?" He said trying to justify his actions.
“Then you should have released them and sent them away” she said with tears in her eye.
“That’s not a reasonable thing to do, you know it and Brandon know it. Why can’t you both just understand why I’m doing thins?” He said with persuasion in his voice.
"You're blinded by your anger and vengeance, Edgar. Jon has suffered enough. It's time to show mercy and compassion." Elaine's voice trembled with frustration.
“Mercy and compassion? That's what got us into this mess in the first place! We can't afford to be weak." He said with a tone of anger in his voice and Elaine was provoked.
Elaine took a step closer, locking her eyes with his to show that she wasn’t intimidated by him and said;
“Strength isn't measured by how harshly we punish others, Edgar. It's measured by our ability to forgive and find a better way forward. And if you are unable to understand this, you are already weak Edgar”
The room fell silent as the two locked eyes, their conflicting emotions filling the space between them. It was a battle of wills, both determined to defend their stance.
“You don’t understand Elaine” Alex said after few moments of silence.
“I can never understand wickedness disguising as justice, and the Edgar I know, understood that too” Elaine said and walked away banging the door behind her.
