Chapter 98: What the realm remembers

On a morning in the ninth year, she stood in the founding site field for the last time that season and let the attunement open fully, reading the field with the full capacity she had been developing for nine years.

The data was different every time. Not in the geological record — that was stable, the pre-Veth formations unchanged, the founding bridge work still in the fabric exactly as it had been placed. But the living layer above the geological, the realm's active reading, the way Veth experienced itself in the present moment — that changed with every season, every year, the ongoing record of a realm continuing to exist and be inhabited and respond to the things that happened in it.

She had been reading this living layer for nine years. She had nine years of field notes, nine autumn seasons and nine summer seasons and the specific Veth winter reading that she had added in the fifth year when she had discovered that the cold season's data had properties the warm season's did not.

She knew, by now, what the realm remembered.

It remembered the founding — of course it did, the geological record was the founding, the physical fabric of Veth shaped by the original bridge work and unchanged in its deep structure since. But she had learned to read something else in the living layer: the ongoing memory of significant events, the way the realm carried its history not just in the geological record but in the active fabric of its present.

The eastern corridor activation was in the living layer. The battle — the threshold contact she had held for eleven minutes in the east — was still there, faint now but legible to the full attunement, the imprint of significant power use in the fabric of the territory.

The Vorren weapon attempt was in the living layer. The founding site's own activation when she had first stood here and the power had recognised the place — that was in the living layer, the imprint of a recognition, the specific quality of a meeting between two things that had been separated by centuries and had found each other.

The vow was in the living layer. She had not expected this — had not expected the personal thing to be in the realm's record, had thought the realm only carried the large events, the power uses and the political things. But the attunement read the living layer honestly, and the living layer carried the vow made in the kitchen garden by two people who had both been inside the realm's attunement at the moment of the making.

She stood in the founding site field and read these things with the full capacity and felt the specific quality of the reading — the bridge power at its most open, both worlds at once, the threshold fully inhabited — and she thought about what the realm remembered and what she had added to it.

Her fieldwork was in the living layer. The nine years of survey work, the specific attention brought to specific places over specific seasons, had left an imprint in the fabric of the territory — the evidence of someone who had been paying the full attention for a long time, whose attunement had touched every corner of the eastern and western reaches and the founding site and the deep geological record.

She was in the realm. Not just in the record — in the fabric itself, the way the first Lena had been in the fabric, the way significant presence left its evidence in the land.

She had been here long enough to be part of the geological record of this place.

She thought about that. About what it meant to be in the land — not as a metaphor, not as the poetic language of belonging, but as a literal reading: the attunement had touched this territory for nine years and the touching had left its evidence in the living layer and anyone with the bridge power who came after her would be able to read it. Would be able to feel the specific quality of her attention in the land, the thoroughness and the honesty and the precise care that she brought to everything.

The permanent record. The methodological section. The gallery. The gardens. The names on the founding study.

And now: the fabric itself.

She was in Veth. She had always been in Veth, from the first day the power recognised the realm and the realm recognised the power. But she had been in it in the full sense now for nine years, and the full sense had left its mark, and the mark was going to be here for as long as the realm was.

She breathed in the founding site air. She let the attunement close, gradually, the way she had learned — the careful closing that did not abrupt-stop the reading but drew it gently back to the resting level, the warm constant that was simply always there.

She picked up her field notes and she walked back toward the boundary keeper station where the transport was waiting.

She was going home. The home that was in the realm that remembered her.

The realm that she was part of. The realm that carried her imprint in its fabric and would carry it long after she was not walking on its particular soil, long after the field notes had been submitted and the attunement had stilled and the ninth year had become all the years after it.

She was home and she was in the record and she was in the land.

She intended to add to all three for as long as she was here.

Which, she thought, walking toward the boundary keeper station in the ninth autumn of her time in Veth, was going to be quite a long time.
