Chapter 29: The Breaking Point
Leo woke up suddenly on a leather couch in a padlocked room off Marco's penthouse, his body stretched out across the chill, cracked leather. The black leather, buffed to a shine through years of wear, reeked of cigar smoke and faint traces of spilled whiskey that clung to the air like a ghostly presence. The walls came in on it, steel walls glinting under a single light suspended from a frayed cord. Its harsh light sliced into the shadows, glinting off rivets bolted along the seams and casting shattered shadows that danced across the concrete floor. It was scratched with marks and dark smudges—damn it—blood?
—whose?
—damn them all. The air clung thick and damp, sweat scalding his nose, a bitter taste mixing with the metallic zip of rust off a reinforced door and the dim, musky scent of wolf fur trapped within the small, enclosed space. Damn bond, damn fever, burning, damn it, igniting his veins like liquid steel. A slatted, narrow window, its shutters barded and banded, allowed slashes of cold moonlight in pale glares, piercing haze that rimmed the east-side skyline.
Distance wailing, far-off sirens, moaning cries twining in on the gust wind shaking glass. Damn city, damn war, Gia's rampage, damn her, still clanging from last hours, guns and the fire, raw seared memory remaining. His leather jacket hung to one side of him, torn and wet, its earthy dampness overpowered by the dank rot of the room. A searing fever seemed to emanate through his torn shirt, gliding along the scabbed blood on his ribs. Damn docks, damn Serpents, damn it, the pain was hot, unrelenting. Ezra, Vito, damn them, where are they? Alive? Damn it, whose fight is this? His chest hurt, a burning hunger that crawled up his arms, a painful reminder of the wolf within him. Damn wolf, damn bond, damn Marco. The fever roared deep inside him, a crazed flame curling his ribcage, tearing at his lungs.
The First Bloods' threat, "Finalize or die," damn them, branded in his mind from the penthouse battle, the threat hanging over them like a death sentence.
Damn, time was slipping away, and he was trapped, playing by rules he did not know. He flipped his Zippo, the flame spitting into life, and lit a cigarette, blowing smoke to steady hands shaking with rage and insanity. The car bomb, Ezra's desperate call, curse them, echoed in his head, the truth of their situation unfolding. His phone, dead, displayed the time: 5:19 a.m., March 07, 2025, the last he'd checked. Damn it, he was trapped, with him, again. The room was a prison, a steel and concrete tomb, and he was trapped in with the one person who might rescue him or kill him. The stillness was suffocating, broken only by the beat of his own heart and the distant wail of sirens. He was ensnared in a snare of his own making, a knot of fear, loyalty, and need. The connection pulsed, hot and insistent, reminding him of the connection that bound him to Marco. He was out of time, and the choices he made then would determine his fate, and perhaps theirs as well.
The world pressed down on him, a heavy weight of duty and doubt. He was caught, and he required escape, or else he'd be consumed by the fire that blazed within him. Marco paced outside the door, silk blouse unbuttoned, dark locks mussed, dark eyes glowing with a hunter's gleam. Damn him, he was so serene, so feral, watching Leo with such an intense focus that he curled up into a ball along his backbone. Damn it, was that fear he saw passing behind that dark-eyed stare? Bastard. His claws curled, the tips of them razor-sharp and dripping with blood, a grim reminder of the Serpents, of the war, damn it, whose war was it, anyway? Leo's voice was roughened, his throat raw.
"Let me out," he demanded, his voice barely more than a whisper. Damn him, he had questions, and he needed them now. Marco's voice was deep, even, menacing. "No.". Select. Curse him, he was so infuriating calm. The door clicked, metallic snap of steel locking, an absolute, last barrier. Curse him, what was he doing this for? The bond ached, hot and red, the wolf in Leo snarling with fury and need. Leo pushed on, a snarl tearing down his throat, feral and animal. Curse it, he was losing his hold. His fists went flying, but Marco intercepted them, sending him back into the steel wall. The metal rang out, its harsh, jarring ring resounding through the room.
Damn it, the ripping sensation was back, claws and teeth pushing, pulling, demanding escape.
Damn it, he was struggling, out of control and stubborn.
"Choose!" Marco growled, pushing Leo against the wall. Shit, he wouldn't let go. Leo was beyond him, fangs exposed, centimeters from Marco's throat. Shit, he was too near, the pull so strong, the denial so sharp. Shit, he was, the fever raged, the bond wailed, and something inside of him shifted, something basic, something new. Shit, whose fire was this? Flesh was close, too close. Hell, Marco's breath was warm against his skin, his eyes crazy and black. "Mine," he panted, his voice low, almost a caress. Hell, did he hear gentleness? Leo growled, his fangs scraping Marco's skin. Hell, he needed him, the need a raw, searing agony. Hell, he wavered, poised on the edge, torn between rage and desire. Hell, whose decision was this? Whose verdict? The door burst open, splintered wood flying. Ezra burst into the room, his paint-stained jeans, his hazel eyes blazing with fury. "Leo, get out!" he shouted, his shattered, desperate voice. Bloody hell, he was mad, frantic. He pulled Leo away from Marco. "No!" Leo snarled, a churning mix of fury and fear coursing through him. Ezra's voice was choked, desperate. "Bond seals humanity.". Gone forever, he'd admitted, eyes pleading. Cursed it, he'd said.
"Lose you, damn Marco," he cried, voice trembling. Cursed him, why did he care so much? Leo froze, the fever raging on, the wolf snarling, cursed it, humanness? To whom would the loss be? The room chilled, shadows dancing, the air thick with tension. Cursed it, Marco stood among them, inscrutable on his face. He spoke softly, his husky, menacing voice, "Perhaps that's what he wants." Damn him, whose truth was he uttering? The air crackled with unspoken threats and want, the choice before Leo agonizing, a chilling turn of fate that could tear him apart in two.The safehouse that was to be his haven had become a battlefield, a stage for a lethal confrontation. The divisions were destroyed, the loyalties severed, and the night was thick with the odor of blood and treachery.
