Chapter 23: Ezra's Secrets & The Cost of Freedom

Leo fell into a squeaky chair in the cluttered sanctuary of Ezra's art studio at Seattle Central, boots scraping against the hardwood floor, its weathered grain covered up by a frenzied tapestry of paint splatters—jarring blues conflicted with muted grays, crimson streaks hardened into razor-sharp scars that reflected the leaping light of a desk lamp balanced on a scarred oak desk. The air was heavy—pungent acrylic smoke seared his nostrils, a razor-sharp edge mixed with the bright, bitter smell of cold coffee that clung to a cracked ceramic cup perched on the edge of the desk, the surface a crazed battleground of sketchpads, frayed brushes with bristles splayed, and squashed paint tubes oozing color onto crumpled pages strewn about like autumn leaves.

Rain dripped gently against the single window, flowing the glass with streams that warped the gray evening outside—bare trees creaked in the wind, their spindly arms reaching towards a darkening sky graying to charcoal, tinted by the last memories of a blood moon's red. A space heater hummed in the corner, its orange coils pulsing heat into the heavy, stale air, mixing with the sharp bite of turpentine wafting from a half-finished canvas propped against the wall—black and red mingling together in dark, bleeding hues, a crazed echo of the storm in his heart. The walls claustrophobically closed in—peeling plaster curled back from a smashed ceiling, yellow water stains and sprawling like grizzled old scars, while pale band concert posters and artwork exhibit notices trembled feebly in the draught, hammered tackily up to the plaster, their flaked edges curled like dry brittle things.

His leather jacket clung to his shoulders—soggy, stiff—its acrid odor overpowered by the studio's disorganized decay, a whiff of mold and damp wood coming from a sagging bookshelf full of dusty vinyl albums and frayed art books. His chest burned—damn wolf—damn bond—damn Marco—rage and dread twisted deep, clawing at his ribs with iron talons—Marco’s blood-soaked smirk from the outpost massacre—“We’re the same”—damn him—echoed in his skull, a sick twist of pleasure still churning his gut—enjoyed it—damn him—why’d it stick? He clicked his Zippo—flame crackled hot—lit a cigarette, expelling smoke to calm hands trembling with fury and exhaustion, the ember glowing red in the darkness—ribs ache—damn it—counterattack gone—Serpents—Gia—damn her—blood on his torn shirt from the fight, each breath a knife. His phone was black—5:19 p.m., March 06, 2025—battery dead since ambush—damn it—left behind—here—with Ezra—whose seduction went deeper?

Ezra in the other corner of the room—rain-soaked jeans painted dark with stains—hazel eyes glinting soft and hard under the uneven light of the lamp—damn him—not the alley's sharp edge, not the muted plea of before—something rough now—fear?

—his hands knocked paint onto his thigh, leaving an ochre trail—nervous tic—set a bookbound book down on the desk with a heavy thud—yellowed pages stirred, dust puffed into the air like ghosts of secrets long buried—"Leo—the whole truth—now"——his voice low—cracked—damn him—trembled—why?

—Leo blew smoke—"Truth?

The studio door slammed open—Vito burst in—flannel soaked dark—gray stubble caught rain—eyes hard—unyielding—"Kid—ritual?—caught—wind—trouble—big"—his voice gruff—rough—damn him—fear colored it—sharp—cold—"Marco—finds—out—you—won't—choose—he—will"—damn it—wolf growled—rage—fear—Leo stood—fists clenched—chair creaked—"Choice?—mine—damn you"—voice cracked—fury—Vito stepped—boots thudded—"captain—of—happiness—not—if—he—knows—ends—you—kid—trust—me"—damn him—warning—ice—pierced—damn it—Marco—Ezra—whose—truth—whose—threat?—Leo paced—smoke thickened—wolf snarled—Marco—fire—Ezra—soft—damn them—pull—war—whose—side?—Vito—"Heard—street—Marco's—close—too—close"—damn it—close?—why'd it—chill?

Smoke—sudden—sharp—damn it—fire—glass shattered—window—flames licking—canvas—books—crackling—damn it—Serpents—crash—wood splintering—door—Gia—war—here—now—Ezra—"Out—now!"—panic—voice shrill—grabbed—Leo—"Move!"—damn him—Vito—"Go—kid—go!"—gruff—desperate—lunged—desk—books—flames—damn them—fled—studio—burned—paint—melted—smoke—choked—thick—black—damn it—sanctuary—lost—fire roaring—walls—buckling—canvas—ash—damn her—Gia—why'd she—strike—why'd she—know?—alley—wet—dark—Leo stumbled—Ezra—Vito—behind—breath—ragged—damn it—looked

Flames burned higher—raging tongues devouring the studio, smoke twisting into the blackness like a released snake.

City sirens wailed in the distance—drawing nearer—nearer—but Leo barely registered.

His heart pounded—his ribs ached—his head spun.

Marco towered over them, shadow against the light of the fire, cigarette ember pulsing like a heartbeat.

He breathed slow, deliberate—watching—waiting.

The bond pulsed hot—crimson threads curling tighter around Leo's torso, his wolf snarling, wanting to erupt, to fight, to claim something—someone.

Ezra breathed in gasps beside him, paint-spattered hands trembling as he grasped Leo's arm, pulling him back, away from the fire, away from Marco. "Leo, we have to leave," Ezra demanded, his voice ripped with desperation, but Leo barely registered it. His pulse thudded in his skull, the heat of the fire intermingling with the flame of Marco's glance, burning, searing into him like red-hot iron.

Vito cursed under his breath, shoving past them, his old flannel soaked with rain, now tinged with sweat. "Move, kid! We’re sitting ducks out here!" He grabbed Ezra by the sleeve, yanking him toward the alley. "We need cover!"

But Leo stood frozen. Fire danced, coals spilling around them as if stars snatched from heaven, ash circulating around them, and yet Marco did not move. He stood, on the roof, cigarette dangling from lips, the sneer hardly present but etched onto his face like a promise—or a warning.

"This what you wanted?" Marco bellowed down, his voice low, smooth, almost laughing. "That fire in your gut? That flame? You see it now, Russo? We're the same."

Leo's hands curled into fists, nails biting into his palms. His wolf growled within him, snarling and scratching at the leash of control.

Ezra pulled at him again. "Leo, please!"

Marco leaned back, cigarette ember glinting in the hollow between his teeth. "Run, then. Like you always do. But you know it won't do any good."

Leo sensed the growl before he felt it—deep, snarling, growing in his throat like a storm on the outskirts of town. He lurched forward, hardly knowing he was doing it, but before he could move another step, Vito stood in his way, shoving him back. "Not here, kid! Not now!"

The fire increased, tongues lapping deeper into the air, and Marco finally flipped the cigarette from his hand, let it drop, watched as it disappeared into the fire below. And then he was moving, vanishing into the smoke.

Leo staggered back, gasping, throbbing head, Ezra and Vito already pushing him along, into the darkness, into the city, away from the fire. But the flames were not behind him anymore. They were inside him—searing, consuming, relentless. And Marco had been right.DEFINEPROPERTYThey were not so different, after all-diagnostobe.Ezra's fingers dug into his arm, holding him back—"Leo—we run—now."But Marco smiled—keen, insightful. "Run, Russo?" His voice was steel and silk, cutting through the black. "Or come home? Leo's breath caught—anger, confusion, longing tangled tight. The city was burning behind him. His past lay ahead of him. And the choice—the one he'd sworn he'd never make—broke over him like the tide.undefinedWhose end, indeed?
