Chapter 52: READY FOR ABSOLUTE WAR

CHAPTER 52. READY FOR ABSOLUTE WAR

IRIS'S POV

"Look at you. You look beautiful, don't you?"

Kaelen’s velvety baritone cuts through the ringing in my ears. I am staring at the vivid reflection of myself in the heavy, silver-framed mirror he holds, my eyelids blinking rapidly in pure, unadulterated disbelief. The girl staring back at me is me, but... elevated. It’s ethereal. It’s terrifyingly beautiful. My usually pale skin seems to possess an inner, pearlescent glow, catching the dim lantern light of the room and radiating a flawless warmth. Is this really what it feels like to be a supernatural? To look like a predator sculpted out of moonlight?

I slowly raise my trembling hand, tracing my fingertips down the curve of my cheek. That is when I realize my claws are still fully extended. Only, this time, without the sheer panic of the alleyway clouding my vision, I can actually examine them. They don't look like grotesque monster talons; they carry a beautiful, iridescent sheen, looking incredibly healthy and lethally sharp. It almost looks like I just walked out of a high-end salon with a fresh, albeit deadly, manicure. I turn my hand over, marveling at the lethal glint at the tips of my fingers.

Kaelen smiles, a warm, rich sound that rumbles in his broad chest. "Don't worry. You'll get the hang of retracting them sooner or later," he murmurs softly.

He sits down beside me on the edge of the mattress, the heavy bed dipping under his massive weight, but I immediately return my hyper-focused attention back to the mirror.

I part my lips slightly, peering past my own breath fogging the glass to examine my... fangs.

I can't even believe I am casually referring to them as my fangs right now. I never in a million years imagined a time in my life when I would actually become a creature of the night. None of this makes logical sense. Am I trapped in a coma? Is this some hyper-realistic fever dream? The fangs aren't massive or grotesque; they are just slightly pronounced, peaking sharply over my lower lip. They look like the delicate, dangerous teeth of a young, inexperienced pup.

"Yeah, don't you dare start thinking that you are some sort of weak little wolf, okay?" Kaelen says, his voice dropping to a serious, commanding register that forces me to turn away from the glass and look directly at him. "Your body just hasn't gotten accustomed to the sheer volume of power inside your soul yet. You have to remember, you’ve been raised in the mundane human world your entire life. The survival instincts, the control, the pack dynamics—the things we are supposed to teach and instill in our kind right from when they are toddlers—you completely missed out on all of that. So... you are going to need guidance. And you are going to need to be watched closely."

His golden, glowing eyes pierce deep into my soul, carrying a protective intensity that makes my breath hitch.

I don't even know what possesses me, but a soft, genuine smile breaks across my face.

"Thank you," I whisper.

His heavy brows pinch together in a slight frown. "Thanks for what?"

"I don't know," I admit, suddenly feeling a rush of profound shyness. I look back down at my lap, fiddling with the edge of the dark sheets. "Just... for guiding me. For helping me navigate this absolute madness. For your general support out there when the Council cornered us."

A devastatingly handsome smile stretches across his face. "What can I say?" he murmurs, leaning in just a fraction closer. "It is the absolute least I can do to accommodate the woman of my dreams."

A violent, blistering blush instantly creeps up my neck and floods my cheeks. The sheer proximity of his huge, muscular frame seated beside me on the intimate space of the bed sends my pulse into overdrive. Oh God, I think to myself, quickly turning my head away to hide the crimson heat on my face as my heart flutters wildly against my ribcage.

He chuckles, a low, rumbling vibration that I feel in my own bones. "You know, you don't have to act so shy when you look at me, Iris."

I bite down hard against my swollen bottom lip, the sharp sting of my new fangs grounding my erratic thoughts. Okay, seriously, what the hell is going on here? Is this level of comfort even normal? Why does everything feel so terrifyingly easy with him? My human logic starts trying to piece together the logistics of my new reality. I had initially assumed that after the alleyway confrontation, he would have dragged me to the female wolves' dormitory. I thought I would be shoved into the hands of some strict den mother to be locked away for the night. Yet... here I am. Sitting right in the middle of the future Alpha's private quarters. Isn't the separation of genders a strict rule in a boarding school environment, supernatural or not? I find myself genuinely wondering, because I am absolutely certain that back in the mundane world, if a situation like this occurred, I would have been heavily escorted to the girls' wing immediately.

But then, the dark memory of Davina flashes behind my eyelids—the young, vicious female wolf who had barged into this very room earlier. I remember the look of raw, possessive authority burning in her golden eyes, and the lethal claws she had aimed at my throat. If I were thrown into a dormitory full of girls just like her, I highly doubt I would survive the night. The vast masses of wicked, jealous glares would be the least of my problems. Davina would absolutely stir up a violent mob against me before dawn.

Ah, hell no, I think to myself, a cold shiver racing down my spine. I think I am perfectly comfortable and completely okay hiding out right here. It is entirely shocking—and deeply surprising—that a massive, terrifying male Alpha is the one actively caring for me, rather than a female peer.

I place the heavy silver mirror face-down on the nightstand and relax my aching back against the headboard. I can feel the physical weight of Kaelen's piercing gaze dragging across my skin. He doesn't seem to want to look away, and his unapologetic staring is doing wicked, fluttering things to my stomach.

"So... I want to tell you something," I say, the courage suddenly bubbling up in my throat.

"I want to tell you something," he echoes in the exact same breath.

We both freeze, the synchronized timing catching us completely off guard. We look at each other with wide, shocked eyes before he lets out a rich, echoing laugh.

"Um, go ahead," I offer, waving a hand nervously.

He smiles, shaking his head. "No, please, you go ahead. Don't worry about me, mine is actually nothing incredibly important."

I look at his handsome, attentive face for a long moment, biting hard against my bottom lip as I gather my scattered thoughts.

"It’s just... now that all this supernatural madness is happening, I kind of feel like my past makes perfect sense," I say, my voice trembling slightly.

He tilts his head, a slight frown of curiosity marring his features. "Why do you think so?"

"Because... I... um... there's this weird thing that has been happening to me for a long time. Back in the human world, I usually..."

Before I can force the confession about the drawings and the dreams past my lips, a loud, aggressive knock hammers against the heavy oak door. The sudden noise sounds like a gunshot in the quiet room, instantly jolting the both of us out of our intimate bubble.

Kaelen’s posture instantly stiffens, a dark wave of pure, unfiltered frustration rolling off his broad shoulders.

"Who's there?" his voice booms, loud, deep, and laced with an Alpha’s warning.

"Elder Cyphros requires your immediate attention in the high chamber, Alpha," the muffled, disciplined voice of a werewolf bodyguard replies through the thick wood.

Kaelen closes his eyes, his jaw clenching so hard the muscles bulge as he lets out a long, heavy exhale. "I'm coming," he shouts back. The sheer irritation is crystal clear in his tone.

A heavy silence descends over the bed for a few seconds. Kaelen reluctantly turns his head to look back at me, the golden fire in his eyes dimmed by duty. "I am so sorry, Iris. I need to go attend to this Council business," he murmurs apologetically.

I nod, forcing a bright, reassuring smile onto my face to mask my crushing disappointment. "Yeah, sure. Go ahead. It’s not like I’m running away anytime soon," I say jokingly.

He chuckles at the dark humor, looking down at me with a brilliant, breathtaking smile that makes my chest ache.

"Goddamn it, you are so incredibly beautiful," he mutters under his breath, a rough whisper meant only for my ears.

He pushes his massive frame up from the mattress, grabbing his jacket, and walks away toward the entrance. My cheeks suddenly feel heavy, burning with an intense heat as I look down at my lap. I watch him from the corner of my eye until he pulls the heavy door open and completely disappears from the room, the latch clicking shut behind him.

I take a deep, shuddering breath, my tense muscles finally unwinding as I collapse fully back against the pillows, gazing up at the dark, vaulted ceiling.

Great. So, this is my actual world now. Good Lord, I know I'm going to have to learn to adapt to a million terrifying things. Really, a lot.

Just as my heart rate begins to settle into a calm rhythm and I let myself relax against the mattress, the brass handle of the door violently clicks. The heavy oak swings wide open with a loud, ominous creak, forcing me to snap upright in a blind panic.

And to my absolute, unadulterated horror, Davina steps slowly into the private quarters.

She is glaring directly at me, her golden eyes narrowed into a sharp, lethal glare that makes the very bones in my body twist with dread. And she is not alone this time. Two other girls flank her like loyal, dangerous shadows. One possesses long, sleek hair with a striking, metallic silver tint, while the other features sharp, angular features framed by pitch-dark hair. All three of them are marching into the room, leveling me down with icy, predatory glares.

"Well, well, well," Davina sneers, her lips curling into a wicked, patronizing smile as she folds her arms tightly across her chest. "Look who finally became a real supernatural."

Oh, good Lord, the thought screams in my head. Is this really how Kaelen operates his territory? Does he just give these vicious girls the leverage and the unrestricted clearance to step into his private bedroom whenever they please? My mind immediately begins to race, spinning out of control in a toxic, jealous direction. Perhaps these girls were the ones he usually entertained in here? Are they his playthings? A sudden, violent flush of territorial anger rises hot and fast in my chest—a primal, possessive rage that I can't seem to control. The wolf inside me awakens to the threat. I clench my fists so tight that my new, iridescent claws dig painfully into my own palms.

The silence in the room turns toxic. We remain locked in what feels like a sharp, deadly glaring contest. I refuse to back down, looking right back at the three of them as they stare me down. We look like ancient titans trapped in a cage, waiting for the first strike, ready for absolute war.
