Chapter 119 An irritated Camille is a sassy one

Camille’s POV

“Camille the least you can do is cheer up,”

“Cheer up?” I gave him a sullen look. The worst one I could pull. A pouty upper lip, with brows narrowed in anger and a glare. “You told me I only had to marry Chad if I failed at my job with Gavriel!”

Dad laughed, that silly good natured sound as if my words were silly. It was things like this that had me going off in a rebellious streak when I was younger. He assumed he knew what I wanted, how I wanted, when and fucking where I wanted it.

I was so done.

“I’ve been good at my job,” I defended. There was no way Gavriel had told him otherwise. Hell, after getting the call from Dad this afternoon, I had begged Gavriel to call my Dad and tell him I had been good at my job. I did not want to marry Chad.

I didn’t have to beg Gavriel twice. He had been furious when found out Dad was still pursuing an arranged marriage with the Martins. And a furious Gavriel meant hot angry sex. At this rate, I could fairly claim being a nymphomaniac. One that’s crazy obsessed with the hunk of a man that I worked with.

Getting engaged to Chad would mean cutting off whatever it was that I had with Gavriel. And that would only happen if by any ridiculous magic, I lost my mind and forgot all about him.

I was sure I would feel forever empty, if that happened. Because Chad? Chad could never fill whatever space Gavriel leaves behind. In fact, no man could.

What would I do, if he called things quits?

When he called things quit.

I shuddered at the thought, diverting my attention quickly to my father before my thoughts tumbled any farther.

“Dad, say something!”

Anything to take my mind off the deep dark thoughts that swarmed my head.

“His father is sick, Camille,” Dad replied and my brows raised.

“Mr Martins?”

“Well considering I am referring to Chad’s Dad, yes, Mr Martins.” Dad replied saucily. “I’m simply going to check on him. Barbara, his wife, says it might be just what we’re all afraid of.”

Well that was sad. I barely saw Martins, but he was one of my fathers buddies. I knew that much. And he had picked me up from middle school for about a year when my father went on one of his ridiculously long travels in Asia. I had to ride in the back with shy short Chad who always had his head stuck in a book.

“If Martin requests to see you and Chad wed-“ Dad started and I held a hand up.

“You will say no!”

“Camille, have you no mercy? It could be the reverse, you know? What if it was me dying and my wish was to see you married?”

“I’d rather marry Gavriel,” I grumbled.

“Gavriel? He has Victoria. And don’t be silly, Gav isn’t your type. Chad is young, like you. He’s very handsome-“

“He also skipped the whole of high school because he was too fucking smart for any of us.” I grumbled. “If it was your dying wish for me to marry Chad, then I’m sorry, you’d better pick another dying wish. It’s sad that Mr Martins is sick, but I’m not going to make a lifetime commitment to his son just because of that.”

“You’re being impossible!” Dad snapped as the car moved through the gates that led to the Martins mansion.

“I’m being impossible? You’re the one who wants to marry me off against my will!” I yelled. “When will you listen to me, Dad?”

“The day you become mature, okay? Mature enough to make those decisions yourself. Hell, just last week you threw a tantrum because Gavriel didn’t like the birthday party and refused to go to work for three days.”

That was his interpretation of what happened? No way was I telling him I spent two of those days stuck with the boss himself.

“But I have been good lately Dad,” I groaned. “I swear I have. I won’t marry Chad. “

I could never marry him. The nerd called me a school slut during one of the middle school reunions that I had been foolish enough to attend.

School slut? It was middle school for goodness sake. I hadn’t even kissed a boy.

Jackass.

When the car swerved into their garage, I realized arguing with my Dad was a waste of time. I might as well do what I had always done.

Ruin his plans before they took flight. They might seem a little diabolical, but he started this when he decided he was going to guilt trip me into marrying some bloke.

I stormed out of the car before the chauffeur could get the door and made sure to slam it real hard.

“Camille!” Dad screamed in horror, whimpering over how I’d almost caused a scratch on his poor baby- the car. I ignored him and made my way in.

I met Martins’ wife Barbara in the living room. She was quite pretty despite her hair turning a full gray, and pulled into the tightest bun I had ever seen.

“Oh sweetie, “ She gushed, reaching out her hands to hug me. “Camille you’re such a big girl now. How you’ve grown.”

“Hi Mrs Martins,” I grinned, giving her a warm hug back. “I’m so sorry to hear about Mr Martins. How is he feeling?” I inquired, genuine concern etched on my face.

I didn’t want to marry the old man’s son. That didn’t mean I wanted him dead.

Barbara sighed, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “He’s not doing well, Camille. The doctors are saying it might be his last days with us,” she murmured, her voice breaking slightly.

My heart clenched at her words, and I felt a surge of guilt for my earlier thoughts about sabotaging the engagement plans just to defy my father. I could do support and compassion.

But I sure as hell was not marrying Chad.

“Please let us know if there’s anything we can do to help,” I offered earnestly, squeezing her hands gently.

Barbara gave me a watery smile, appreciative of my gesture. “Thank you, Camille. I’m glad you came. Chad has been waiting to see you. You two haven’t exactly spoken in-”

“Two years, mom,” Chad stepped in then.

I knew that I called him a nerd a lot. But he didn’t look terrible. He had warm brown eyes, the only edgy thing about his appearance. His hair was the typical brunette man next door style and his talk lea built probably got some panties wet. Just not mine.

Apparently, if the past few months were considered, I had a thing for hot muscular men with large junk and a penchant for dominance. Chad was vanilla, I couldn’t commit to such a kind of love.

“Hi Camille,” He greeted, giving me a shy warm smile. “How are you doing?”

Aww wasn’t he cute? Too bad I was about to be a total bitch to him. I tried to think about when he called me a school slut and that got my blood boiling enough not to care what slipped out of my mouth.

“I’m surprised they let you keep that hairstyle at med school. And would you look at that? You got those crooked teeth straightened.”

His smile dropped then. His mother gasped behind me and I shot her an unapologetic smile.

“I… I’m no longer in Med school,” He mumbled, eyes on mother’s carpet.

I gasped, placing my hand over my mouth. “You dropped out?”

“No,” He shook his head. “I…”

“You got kicked out? No way. What did you do? Refuse to play dungeons and dragons with your nerd friends?”

“Camille?” Dad hissed, strutting across the room. “What the hell are you doing?”

“Dad, I’m just trying to have a conversation here,” I shot back, glaring at him. “Chad can handle it. He’s a big boy now, right?”

I turned back to Chad, who was struggling to maintain his composure. “Well, spill it. What happened? You can tell us the truth. Was it because you couldn’t stop dissecting frogs and got banned from the lab?”

“Camille!” Dad’s voice boomed through the room, his face a mix of anger and disappointment. “That’s enough! Apologize to Chad this instant.”

“Oh there is no need,” A frail yet stern voice that I had heard for almost a year though middle school reached my ears.

Mr Martins wheeled himself out of the corridor on his wheelchair, a dirty look on his face.

“I see the rumors are true. She is every bit as vile as they say.”
