Chapter 95: Matured Surges

~Elowen's POV~

Dawn arrived gently over Tharros the next morning, soft golden light filtering through the high windows of the safe chamber and warming the ancient stone floors.

I stood before a small, cracked mirror propped against the wall, tracing the new lines around my eyes and mouth with careful fingers.

The aging from the nexus trap had settled into my skin like a quiet map of everything I had survived.

"Earned wisdom, not a loss," I said softly to my reflection, voice steady despite the ache in my chest.

"These lines tell the story of a woman who refused to break. They are proof I kept fighting for my child."

The boy... Now a teenager with steady eyes and wings he was learning to control, waited nearby.

He leaned against the far wall with his arms crossed in a pose that already carried quiet confidence.

I turned to him and placed my hand on the nearest minor rift pulsing faintly in the chamber wall, a small tear in reality that leaked faint violet light.

The new maturity in my blood flowed easier now, sharper focus replacing youthful hesitation.

I sealed the tear with a single focused push of will, the violet light winking out as the rift closed with a soft sigh.

"You see?" I told him, stepping closer and resting both hands on his shoulders so he could feel the steadiness in my touch. "Age isn't a weakness. It sharpens focus and teaches you when to push and when to wait."

"Oh," he nodded in realization and I continued.

"The body may change, but the will grows stronger if you let it. Now try balancing your hybrid sides, strength and cunning together. Feel the wolf's power in your shoulders and the vampire's precision in your wings. Let them work as partners, not rivals."

He spread his wings slowly, the leathery membranes stretching with a soft rustle, then folded them with deliberate precision, each feather settling into place.

"But Mama, I had dreams last night. Alaric gave me strength to stand tall even when the world pushed back. Sylion gave me heart to protect the ones I love without losing myself. And Valerian… he strikes me when the moment is perfect."

I exhaled slowly, choosing my words with care as I held his gaze.

"All three shaped you now, even the dark parts you carry from Valerian's blood after the experiment he did on you. But you choose which voice leads inside you. A heart without strength becomes weakness, and cunning without love becomes emptiness."

He nodded thoughtfully, wings settling calm and controlled against his back for the first time.

"I won't let any of them define me completely. I'll take what's good and leave the rest behind."

I smiled and ruffled his hair gently, the familiar gesture feeling both nostalgic and new with his taller frame.

"Good, that's the first real step toward becoming who you're meant to be. I'm proud of you, my son, truly proud."

~Alaric's POV~

Afternoon light cut across the nexus perimeter, bright and unforgiving as I guarded the outer line with a small team of Dravenmere warriors.

The air still hummed with residual rift energy when Veyra's elite squad broke through the eastern barrier in a coordinated rush, relic blades glowing with stolen power.

I met the first two head-on, shifting partially so claws met their strikes in a shower of sparks.

"You picked the wrong day to test me," I growled, dropping one with a heavy shoulder charge that sent him crashing into the dirt.

I disarmed the second with a sharp twist of my wrist, sending his blade flying.

The third elite lunged low, aiming for my legs. But I spun and drove my fist into his chest, feeling the major relic shard he carried crack free under the impact.

I snatched the shard from the ground as the rest of his team retreated into the trees. "It's mine now," I muttered, slipping the glowing fragment into my coat for later study.

Then footsteps approached from behind, carefully. I turned, ready for another fight, claws still extended.

But Tazira stepped out from the tree line, hands visible and empty, her expression carefully neutral but her eyes sharp with calculation. Which caught me off guard.

"Alaric," she called, voice smooth. "I'm not here to fight. Lira's powers have grown stronger since the last time, and I can amplify them safely now, teaching her control. In exchange, give me co-parenting rights. We raise her together like a real family again."

I stared at her, anger rising fast and hot in my chest.

"Are you for real? After all the potions you slipped into my drinks for years, the lies that nearly destroyed me, and the danger you put our daughter in with your schemes and alliances? You think you can bargain with her future like this, as if the past never happened?"

She took a step closer, voice dropping into what she clearly thought was a reasonable tone.

"I made mistakes, yes, but I'm still her mother. She needs both of us...my knowledge and your raw strength. My way keeps her stable and hidden from Valerian's reach."

"Your way almost broke her!" I shot back, voice rising with raw fury as I stepped forward, towering over her.

"You poisoned her with unstable rites, dragged her into your betrayals, and now you want me to hand her back to you like nothing happened? No deal! You stay away from her and from me. If I see you near Lira again, I won't be this merciful."

Tazira's face hardened, eyes flashing with cold determination. "Then you leave me no choice, Alaric. You always were too stubborn for your own good."

She raised her hand in a sharp gesture. Lira appeared at the edge of the perimeter, eyes glazed with unstable power that crackled dangerously around her small frame.

The girl's surge exploded outward in a wild, uncontrolled wave, slamming directly into the relic shard hidden in my coat.

The shard shattered with a deafening crack that echoed across the battlefield.

A World floodgate tore open behind me, massive and roaring with otherworldly hunger.

Ethereal beasts poured through in a flood, howling as they spilled across the perimeter in a tide of darkness.

"See what your pride costs?" Tazira called over the chaos, already retreating into the trees. "Now we all pay."

I roared in fury, shoving Lira behind me as the first beasts charged towards us...
