Chapter 29: Gathering Storm
The air was smoky with magic that had burned. The Blood Moon was gone, and all that remained was the battle’s devastation. Yna stood at the edge of the ridge, staring out at the horizon, magic still pulsing in her body. The crystal had broken when she’d thrown it at Kael, but its energy remained in her.
She didn't just hold the magic; she was the magic.
Marcus stumbled beside her, bloody and bruised. ‘We’ve gotta get out of here. ’
Yna nodded at the rest of the pack. Most were injured, some barely able to stand, but alive. Liora helped Leo dress wounds as the others gathered what supplies they could carry.
“We won tonight, ” Yna said, loud enough for the pack to hear. “But this isn’t over. ”
Liora wiped the blood from her blade. ‘Kael’s gone, but the warlocks aren’t. They’ll come back stronger. ’
Marcus folded his arms. “And we’ll be ready.”
Yna wasn’t sure. She felt something in the air, something more powerful than Kael or his Shadow Wolves. She had seen the warlock before the battle was over, high in the mountains watching. He didn’t fight; he merely waited.
And that terrified her.
“We need answers, ” she said. ‘We need to know who’s really behind this. ’
Leo winced, one eye swollen shut, and said, We go where it all began.
Marcus turned to him. “You mean the ruins?”
Leo nodded. The old coven temple. If warlocks are left, they’ll gather there.
A heavy silence fell.
The ruins were deep in enemy territory.
Marcus exhaled sharply. “It’s a risk.”
“It’s our only choice,” Yna countered.
Marcus looked at her for a long moment then nodded. "We're out first light. ’
They slept that night, the pack drained but determined. Yna lay awake, staring at the stars and listening to the wind.
Something was coming.
And this time, she wasn’t sure if she was ready.

The Ruins of the Blood Coven
They traveled fast. There was no time to waste.
As they moved farther north, the forests gave way to cliffs and the air grew colder. They split up into smaller groups and avoided open plains where they could be seen.
By the third night, they were at the ruins' edge.
The Blood Coven's temple was nothing but ruins, but Yna sensed dark power still existed here. Warlocks had once ruled these lands, and magic hadn't entirely died out.
Marcus gave the silent signal. The pack spread out, moving silently through the ruins. Yna stayed close to Marcus, her fingers twitching. She was ready to fight.
Then she heard it.
A whisper.
Low and distant, carried on the wind.
She turned sharply.
The shadows moved.
“They’re here.”
Before she could respond, men walked out from the shadows, dressed in red and wearing hoods. Yna shuddered at their appearance.
The warlocks had been waiting.
A deep voice rang out in the ruins. 'We've been expecting you. '
The tallest warlock stepped forward, hood slipping from his pale face and revealing a smudgy sigil.
He said, 'Yna, you have the power of the crystal. You are one of us now. '
Marcus growled and stood in front of her, ‘She belongs to no one. ’
The warlock chuckled. “That’s where you’re wrong.”
He raised his hand.
The ground trembled.
Magic exploded outward, and the ruins came alive.

The Ambush
The air turned to fire.
Flames rose from the ground in a ring of lava magic around the pack. Warlocks didn’t smash into things like Shadow Wolves; they ruled the land with spells.
Yna barely dodged as the dark energy chains hit her. Rolling she hit dirt, but more chains grabbed her wrists.
Liora cut at the chains with her blades, but they reform, stronger than ever.
Leo shouted, feeling a warlock who got too close.
Marcus transformed into a wolf and charged. He easily crushed two enemies, but there were too many.
Yna fought the chains, feeling them sap her strength. The warlock came forward, his eyes shining coldly.
The crystal's power runs in your blood, he whispered. 'We will *take* it. '
Yna’s pulse thundered.
*No.*
A bolt of energy smashed chains and sent the warlock reeling back, hissing in pain.
Yna burned from the inside out. The raw magic from the shattered crystal was no longer contained.
It was *hers.*
She lunged forward, slamming her palm into the warlock's chest.
The magic surged through him.
His eyes widened—then he collapsed, his body turning to dust.
The pack fought harder. With Yna free, their momentum shifted.
Leo and Liora slashed at warlocks together, their strikes deadly and precise. Marcus cut through their defenses, claws ripping apart the last foot soldiers.
But the leader—the warlock who had summoned the fire—stood untouched.
He watched Yna carefully, like a man studying a weapon.
Then he smiled.
And disappeared.
The flames vanished with him, leaving only silence.

Aftermath
The ruins were still there.
The last warlocks vanished, their bodies crumbling into dust.
Yna stood in the center, breathing hard, hands still trembling.
Marcus changed back to human. 'They weren't trying to kill us. '
Liora wiped blood from her blade. “No. They wanted Yna.”
Leo glanced at Yna. “Why did he smile at you?”
Yna didn’t have an answer.
But she knew one thing.
This war wasn’t about the crystal anymore.
It was about *her.*

High in the mountains the escaped warlock stared at an ancient, crumbling throne.
A deep, guttural voice echoed from the shadows.
“Is she ready?”
The warlock lowered his hood.
“She’s awakening.”
A long silence. Then—
“Good. It’s time we make our move.”
The darkness rippled.
The true enemy was coming.
