Chapter 54

The next day, Nick awoke and looked around. Then he tilted his chin down to look at his chest. An ugly red scar held together by staples sliced his sternum.

The events from the last forty-eight hours came flooding back. Collapsing on the football field, a ton of rocks falling on him, crushing him. A ride in an ambulance. People talking about him. A birth defect in his heart. But still there was a niggling concern of something he was missing. Something important.

A man came in, carrying a chart, looking efficient and professional. “I’m Dr. Garson. How are you feeling today, Nick?”

“Fine.”

The man raised his brows and paused as if waiting for more.

“I said I feel better today.”

“Good. Can you say your full name for me?”

“Nicholas Dupont.”

“Good. Good.”

“When can I go home?”

“We’ll see how you do when we get you up and moving.”

“I want to go home.” Nick wasn’t sure how long he had been here exactly, but he was already tired of being in bed, taking pills, not having any privacy. “Can you tell me who won the game?”

“The game?” The doctor scratched his head. “Afraid I can’t tell you that.”
