Chapter 69: ALMOST TOO PERFECT
DETECTIVE KIM
I sat at my desk in the dimly lit precinct, the case file for Mia Thompson spread out like a puzzle I couldn’t quite solve. Two weeks had turned into three, and every lead felt like it dissolved the moment I touched it. Mia’s phone had gone dark. Her bank accounts showed no activity. No credit card charges, no social media pings. Her best friend Yuna’s story about Dante Voss kept circling in my head because there were too many red flags to ignore. I rubbed my eyes and pulled up another database search.
Dante Voss was thirty-four, a wealthy businessman on paper who deals in real estate, tech investments, legitimate holdings that looked clean. But the deeper I dug, the more the Voss family name lit up like warning flares. They had italian-American roots with documented organized crime connections going back two generations. His father had been investigated for racketeering, uncle did time for extortion and cousins were linked to gambling rings and loan sharking. Dante himself had no arrest record and no convictions and I found that to be too clean. The kind of man who operated in shadows while maintaining a polished public face.
I leaned back in my chair, staring at the grainy photo of him from a charity gala with a charismatic smile in an expensive suit. Next to him in older photos was Mia laughing, alive and completely unaware. Something was wrong and I could feel it in my gut. I picked up the phone and called the judge I’d been working with on similar cases. “I need a warrant for the entire building at 245 Harbor View. Suspicion of foul play in the disappearance of Mia Thompson and possible unlawful imprisonment.”
After hours of back-and-forth and laying out the pattern—Dante’s controlling behavior, the isolation, the family ties—the judge signed it. By late afternoon, I had two uniformed officers with me and the warrant in hand. We drove to the building in silence, the tension thick. If Mia was inside somewhere, we were about to find her.
Dante answered the door to the penthouse himself. He looked composed and even concerned. “Detective Kim. Officers. I assume this is about Mia?”
I held up the warrant. “We have authorization to search the entire building. Every floor and every unit.”
He stepped aside without hesitation. “Search wherever you need. I want her found too. I miss her every day.”
His cooperation was flawless. I led the team floor by floor. We started at the top which had the luxury apartments, some occupied and most empty investment units. We knocked on doors, explained the situation, searched closets, bathrooms, storage spaces but found nothing. No signs of struggle, no hidden compartments, no Mia.
I walked the corridors slowly, noting the layout. The building felt like a fortress with modern security and cameras everywhere. We descended level by level. I paused on the ground floor near what the blueprints called “basement storage access.” but residence said nothing was down there so I brushed it off.
The official building plans showed multiple floors plus a standard basement for utilities and storage. But we still searched the visible basement thoroughly and only found dusty storage cages, mechanical rooms, HVAC systems and nothing useful.
Four hours later, we had covered everything. Sweat dampened my collar as frustration boiled under my skin. I confronted Dante in the lobby as my officers wrapped up.
“If you’re hiding her—” I started, voice sharp.
He met my gaze steadily, eyes filled with what looked like genuine sorrow. “I’m not. I wish I was then at least I would know where she is. If she contacts me, you’ll be the first to know.”
I wanted to believe the sincerity, but my instincts screamed otherwise. The Voss family didn’t get this clean by accident. I handed him another card. “We’ll keep digging.”
Back at the station, I updated the file with another dead end. The search had turned up nothing illegal so that means no probable cause for more invasive moves. Mia’s trail was ice cold, and Dante Voss remained untouchable.
MIA
Hours later, the heavy door to my room unlocked. I had spent the day curled on the bed, staring at the calendar, counting the X’s that marked my slow erasure. Dante stepped inside, closing the door behind him.
“The police searched the building,” he said simply, watching my reaction.
I lifted my head slowly, a spark of desperate hope flaring despite everything. “They were here?”
