Chapter 60 He Said He'd Set Me Up
Grayson's brow quirked.
"You don't trust me?"
Madison nodded slightly.
Grayson actually took a moment to consider it seriously.
"If we're talking trust, WhitneyMadison, I only trust myself. Are you satisfied with that answer?"
Madison was at a loss for words. It sounded like he didn't trust Nora as well.
Did he mean that he didn't even trust Nora?
Her fingers clenched involuntarily., "And what about Nora?"
Grayson's gaze darkened.
Madison just kept her eyes on him.
His lips moved, but before he could speak, a knock sounded on the door.
An aide stood outside, handing Grayson a bag.
Taking it, Grayson walked over to the bedside. , "Come here, let's dry your hair."
She took a moment to gather her emotions, took a seat on the couch, and let Grayson blow-dry her hair.
After finishing, Grayson finally spoke.
"Nora is special to me, WhitneyMadison. If you don't want to disgrace yourself, don't compare yourself to her again."
Madison stayed quiet for a moment., "Okay, I get it."
Grayson's phone also began to ring.
The distinct ringtone is was meant for Nora.
Suddenly, Madison felt overwhelmingly exhausted.
"Go ahead and take care of what you need to, Grayson. I need some rest."
Grayson glanced at her., "Nora's at the hospital for a dressing change. I'll go keep her company."
"Yeah."
Madison lay in bed, the covers half hiding her face.
Grayson frowned slightly.
He walked over and pulled the covers down.
"Get some sleep if you're tired. I'll be back after she's taken care of."
Madison didn't respond.
Madison didn't trust Grayson any more than Grayson trusted her.
Like now, she found Grayson's words hard to believe.
Still, she nodded in the end.
There was no point in creating awkwardness. It would only make her feel more embarrassed.
After Grayson left, Madison found herself restless, unable to sleep in the stifling atmosphere of the hospital room.
She decided to get dressed and take a walk.
But Nno sooner had she stepped into the hallway than she saw Ethan checking each room as he made his way toward her. M
Madison panicked for a moment and was about to hide when she heard Ethan call out.
"Madison!"
She didn't stop, picking up her pace toward Amelia's office instead.
The hospital room was not a safe place.
If Ethan cornered her there, it would be even more dangerous.
Heading to Amelia seemed like the best option now.
But before she could get there, Ethan roughly grabbed her hair from behind.
Madison's face went pale instantly.
"Ethan!" she bellowed with fury.
Ethan just smirked.
"What, trying to hide from me?"
While holding her hair, he forced her to face him., "You think you can get away from me? Try it, and I'll make sure you regret it!"
Madison winced in pain, her face turning even paler.
"What do you want? Ethan, this is a hospital! Aren't you afraid of someone calling the police?"
Surrounding them, a crowd had already formed.
Some even started recording the altercation with their cell phones.
Ethan probably didn't like the audience. He scoffed and let go of Madison.
"Sweetheart, why don't we find a place to have a proper talk?" he suggested. He glared at the onlookers., "What are you looking at? This is my daughter. Delete those videos now!"
He snatched a phone, deleted a video, and then turned back to Madison.
"So? Sweetheart? Have you made up your mind? Where shall we talk?"
Madison's lips were pursed tight.
She knew that if she didn't lead Ethan away, there was no telling how much chaos he could cause here.
Taking a deep breath, she finally spoke.
"Back to at the hospital room."
Saying this, she headed back first.
Ethan followed, laughing along the way and greeting the spectators.
"See? This is my girl, Madison, a manager at Ivy Jewelry."
Madison felt a pounding in her temples.
She had never anticipated Ethan would find her there.
Returning from City B that day, Madison was somewhat relieved not to encounter Ethan at the entrance of their apartment complex.
Imagine her surprise when she learned he had made his way to the hospital.
Upon entering the hospital room, Madison asked with a stern face, "What is it this time? Spit it out."
Ethan's urgency seemed to evaporate once he was inside the hospital room. He strolled around, clicking his tongue twice. "Wow, hospital rooms are so fancy now? My girl really knows how to live."
Madison had no interest in small talk. "What do you want, Ethan? I've already given you the money!"
A chuckle escaped Ethan's lips. "What's the matter? You despise your dear old dad that much?"
Staring him down, Madison snapped, "If you don't want to talk, then get out!"
"Such a nasty temper!" Ethan quipped, his eyes landing on the pack of cigarettes Grayson had left on the table. Without a second thought, he pocketed it.
"Don't worry, I'm not here to cause trouble. You're not getting any younger, almost thirty now. Even though your mother's barely hanging on, I, as your father, still have to look out for your future. I've got someone I want you to meet."
Madison scoffed at the absurdity. It was ridiculous that Ethan had someone to introduced her to. Is Ethan introducing her to someone? He was probably looking to sell her off.
"No need. I have no plans to meet anyone right now."
Ethan snorted. "Madison, don't say I didn't warn you. You better listen while I'm talking nicely. Don't make me bother with your half-dead mother!"
"What do you want, Ethan?"
"It's simple. Go on this date, and I won't have to mess with her."
With that, he lit a cigarette, lounging on the sofa with an air of indifference.
After a few puffs, he suddenly sat up. "Madison, you wouldn't happen to have a man, would you?"
Her lips tightened, and after a moment, she answered, "No."
Ethan stood up rapidly, sneering, "No? Then, whose cigarettes are these?"
Madison averted his gaze. "Someone left them here when they visited."
"Heh, the people around my daughter sure have good taste. Fancy cigarettes."
Madison was tired of the back-and-forth with Ethan.
"I've been feeling unwell lately. Let's talk when I'm better," she said, hoping to buy herself some time.
Ethan, probably because the million hadn't run out yet, didn't press further, and his mood seemed surprisingly light.
"Fine, but next time, if you try to dodge me, I'll send that old hag to meet the reaper!"
After Ethan departed, Madison could barely hold herself together.
Exhausted, both body and soul, she lay down and quickly fell asleep .
When she woke up again, night had fallen.
She stirred slightly, and Grayson's voice reached her.
"Awake?"
Madison paused, turning to see Grayson sitting on the couch, a laptop on the table in front of him, alongside a stack of papers.
The corners of her lips mouth twitched.
"When did you get back?"
Grayson chuckled softly., "I've been here for three hours now. I thought Whitney you wereas going to sleep through the whole evening!"
"Sorry, I thought you weren't coming back."
Grayson glanced at her, her; his gaze intense.
"Does Whitney trust me so littleDo you have so little trust in me?"
Madison didn't respond.
Grayson huffed lightly., "Hungry? What do you feel like? I'll order something."
Madison shook her head., "Not hing in particularsure, anything's fine."
Grayson nodded and made a phone call.
After hanging up, he asked, "Did Ethan come by today?"
Madison tensed slightly—Ethan had caused quite a commotion in the hallway.
It wasn't surprising that Grayson would know.
"Yeah," she replied.
"What for?" Grayson eyed Madison curiously.
Madison was silent for a long moment before saying, "He came to set me up on a date."
