Chapter 21: AMELIA POV
"Room service." The sound of the housekeeper knocking woke me up.
"Come in," I managed to croak and sat up as the housekeeper walked in with a cup of coffee for me. I thank her and take the cup from her tray.
"Excuse me," I said, stopping her before she left my room. "Who sent this?" I asked.
"Xavier King, room 124," she said and left.
Why would he send me coffee?
The memories from last night hit me like a truck and I'm glad the bed has a backboard to support me.
The guy, the argument, the yelling…the kissing.
"Fuck me or get out."
I can't believe I said that.
I groan out loud as my hands go over my face in embarrassment at what I did last night.
All I remember is arguing with Xavier and then kissing him on the couch…
He wouldn't.
He couldn't have had sex with me when I was drunk out of my mind. He was heartless but he certainly had the bare minimum of morals…hopefully.
Seconds later I find myself banging the door of room 124, making sure Xavier hears me.
"Yes," Xavier answered the door. He seems calm and smothered by my commotion.
"How could you have sex with me?" I asked. I'm not shouting because I don't want to cause a scene, drawing more attention to myself.
"Excuse me." He seemed offended that I would even ask.
"The kissing last night, the coffee this morning—please explain why else you would do that," I questioned.
"The kiss last night—you grabbed me, and I admit I entertained it too much, but I surely didn't start it," he began. "And the coffee is because we have a meeting today, but I'm sure you would be too hungover to even remember."
His patronizing tone made me even angrier than the fact that he couldn't slept with me.
"I didn't sleep with you. You passed out on me, and I put you in the bed," he explained. "To be honest, I'm a little hurt that you would think I need to be with a drunk girl to get laid."
"I have no expectations from you," I seethed.
He says nothing but looks me up and down, humour filling his eyes. My dress is ruffled up, the straps of my heels are trailing behind me and my hair is a rat's nest.
"Nice jewellery," he commented before shutting the door in my face.
My hand goes to my neck, double checking what necklace I have on. I roll my eyes when I realized I picked up the wrong chain to wear last night.
I hadn't seen the one Xavier had given me in years, thinking it had been thrown out somewhere when I moved out of the safe house.
I didn't have an explanation, even to myself, for why I kept it.
Perhaps I kept it as a memory, the only piece of his love I had left.
For months after the divorce, I was still in love with him, to the point where if he came back for me, I would've jumped into his arms without a doubt.
And when we crossed paths again, I thought that feeling would come back.
But it didn't.
I go back to hotel room, grabbing anything I left like my phone and keys before calling my chauffeur to get me.
I had no idea where Jasmine and Jodie were, but I knew they didn't book a room, so they probably got a Buber back. Still, I decided to make sure to call Jasmine.
The phone rings for a while before she picks up.
"Hey," her tired voice answered.
"Sorry to disturb you," I whispered, somehow hoping that by whispering, I was less annoying even though she was already awake, "How did you guys get home?"
"Dylan picked me up, and Jodie left with Leroy," she said, and I knew she was smirking.
"She what?" I asked, surprised yet proud of her.
"Both of you guys need to come over for dinner tonight so she can dish," Jasmine gossiped, and I heard the baby start to cry in the background. "I need to go now."
"Ok, just wanted to make sure you guys are ok,” I said and hung up.
My car arrives and I'm soon home. After eating some eggs and toast I get dressed into a baby pink office dress and leave for my meeting with Xavier.
By the time I'm at the office, Xavier is already there waiting for me.
"Good morning,” I said and sat down opposite him.
"Miss Davis," he started, "I want to end our partnership." He sighed.
"What?"
Panic begins to engulf me, this can't happen. Not when I'm so close.
"It's been 3 weeks. 3 weeks, and I'm still in decline. What have you done for me? Absolutely nothing."
"Don't stop digging when you’re right above the gold," I said.
"It took you a week last time, and now you've done nothing in 3. Maybe you're just not the same businesswoman anymore."
"When you're done blaming everyone but yourself, let me remind you…" I began. He looks like he's been slapped across the face at my comment. "You're not the same businessman anymore, Mr King." I threw his insult right back at him. "Of course, it only took me one week 4 years ago."
His expression asks me to explain.
"4 years ago, you were the best. Of course, there was no Pyramid and no Eva Enterprises to hurt you, to compete with you. But there's a huge difference between improving something that's already the best and something that is dying," I said.
"Miss Davis…" he started, but I carried on talking.
"The truth is, Mr King, you're afraid of my help. You're ashamed that your ex-wife, who's only a billionaire because of your money, has to now come and rescue you from completely collapsing."
"That's not true." He stopped me.
"It may not be, but I own 25% of Kings Corp. whether or not you decide to keep working with me, so if I were you, I'd stick with me," I said.
"I think you’re mistaken. 25% if your contributions make a reasonable impact on profit," he corrected me.
"Actually, I think you're mistaken. Next time, proofread your contracts before signing them." I smirked.
His face drops, I see the defeat.
"So, what's it gonna be? Do I own 25% of a dead company, or are you going to keep me around?"
"End of the month. I'm giving you till the end of the month. Otherwise, I'm going to see you in court." He slammed his fist into my desk before storming out.
"All's fair in war, Xavier."
