Chapter 149

“The sonographer worried me at my last ultrasound. She seemed to linger a bit too long. She told us it was nothing, but I got the feeling she wasn’t being entirely truthful. I’m going to see what my midwives think when they come over.”

“Can you feel movement from both babies?”

Lynn nodded. “I can feel one more than the other usually. I’ve been feeling them both quite often the past week. They seem to believe that when momma is sleeping, they should have a jumping jacks contest,” she laughed. “I think they’re trying to prepare me for their arrival and all of the sleepless nights that will come with it.”

“As long as you’re still feeling movements from both babies, I’m sure there’s nothing to worry about. Try not to stress out about it too much. The stress isn’t good for those babies.”

“Now you sound like Alexis.” Lynn waggled her brows. “Speaking of my wife, let’s go pester her. Maybe between the two of us we can sweet talk her into buying some more doughnuts.”

William laughed. He stood, holding out one hand as he helped a wobbly Lynn to her feet. “What happened to pregnant women eating pickles and ice cream?”

“Yuck. Just give me doughnuts, peanut butter, a can of spray cheese, and I’m good.” She reached out, placing her palm on William’s shoulder when she felt a bit dizzy upon standing. After shaking it off, she smiled. “Let’s go find food! I’m starving.” 28

Katie gasped when she walked in a complete circle around Lynn, eying her sister’s growing figure. She blinked, stopping directly in front of her with a grin. “You’ve…blossomed.”

Lynn laughed, rolling her eyes when she looked at Katie with disdain. “I’m carrying twins, sis. What do you expect me to look like, maternity Barbie?” Lynn’s crimson shirt clung to her rounded midsection like a second skin. At this point, she didn’t hold out much hope of ever being able to reclaim her pre-baby weight. Every night she used a cocoa butter and Vitamin E cream across her stomach, trying to prevent so many stretch marks from forming. When she’d gone to her last ultrasound, the babies measured at three pounds and two ounces while the other one weighed two pounds and fourteen ounces.

“Oh imagine how well maternity Barbie would go over on the market.” Katie giggled. “I can see the protests now!” She glanced down at Lynn’s stomach with a crinkle of her nose. “No offense, sis, but you’ve gained a great deal of weight in the past couple of weeks. If I didn’t know better I’d swear you were already nine months pregnant.”

“I’ve gained eleven more pounds to be exact.” Lynn popped a baby carrot into her mouth before reaching for a piece of celery. “So far, I’ve gained a total of forty seven pounds.” She leaned against the counter top, releasing a breath when she attempted to get comfortable. At this stage in her pregnancy, getting comfortable seemed to be impossible. No matter what position she was in, breathing was becoming challenging due to the immense weight gain. “I just really want it over with,” she said as she closed her eyes. “I’ve stopped eating so many doughnuts. I haven’t touched ice cream in over a month. Mostly what I eat is rabbit food or something high in protein. Yet according to Charlene and Doctor Rollins, I’m still overweight. I’m only twenty-six weeks pregnant! Can you imagine what I will look like if I make it to term?”

“Well at least you’re feeding the babies well.” Katie giggled as she patted Lynn’s stomach. “Maybe you’re hiding triplets in there.”

Lynn’s eyes flew open. “Bite your tongue, sis!”

“Hey, it’s possible. So did you ever talk to your manager about canceling the rest of your tour dates?” Katie reached over, stealing one of the baby carrots.

“Yes! I talked to him yesterday and he was livid. You should have heard him when I informed him that my doctor was placing me on a no-fly restriction for the remainder of my pregnancy. He didn’t even believe me. Doctor Rollins faxed him a copy of the restriction, as did Charlene. Until these little miracles are born, momma is grounded.” Lynn was thankful she had a legit excuse to postpone the tour.

“I bet momma is grounded in more ways than one.” Katie laughed when Lynn shot her another irritated glare. “Oh don’t give me that pissy stare. I’ve seen the way Alexis constantly hovers over you. Aimee was a bit overbearing when I was pregnant with Shania, but she was nothing like Alexis is with you. I’m shocked Alexis hasn’t gone out and bought a whip to keep you in line.”

“Please don’t suggest it or she just might buy one.” Lynn laughed, knowing her wife would no doubt find the idea entertaining. “So are we going to go shopping or not?”

“Are you sure you can fit in my car,” Katie teased. She jumped out of the way when Lynn tossed a baby carrot at her. Starlight rushed into the kitchen, snatching the bright orange tidbit the moment it bounced into the floor. “Starlight loves it when you throw food at me. Don’t you girl?” Katie knelt down, patting Starlight on the head.
