Chapter 180: April Twenty-Third
April twenty-third. The day. The final day. The end.
We woke at dawn. Four Lunas. Ready. Scared. Determined.
"Today we die. Today we save the world. Today we become legends." I spoke quietly. Accepting. Peaceful.
Through the bond Sarah and Maya sent love. Strength. Goodbye. Forever goodbye.
Luna held my hand. "Thank you. For everything. For being my mother. For teaching me. For loving me."
"Thank you for being my daughter. My pride. My joy. My Luna." I hugged her. Long. Final.
We ate breakfast. Simple. Quiet. Our last meal. Toast. Eggs. Coffee. Normal things. Final things.
Then we prepared. Put on our gear. Simple clothes. Comfortable. Practical. Nothing fancy. Nothing dramatic.
"No armor. No weapons. Just us. Just our power. Just our sacrifice." Sarah was ready. Calm.
"The way it should be. The way it always was. Luna Triad. Pure. Simple. True." Maya agreed.
We walked to Mount Vesuvius. Base of the mountain. The ritual spot. The final battlefield.
Mei was there. Young Thomas. Margaret. Derek. The pack. Hundreds watching. Supporting. Grieving already.
"The Ancient One will rise at noon. Exactly. When the sun is highest. When light is strongest. When darkness fights hardest." Mei explained. Final instructions.
"We take our positions at eleven. North. South. East. West. Wait. When it rises we channel. We seal. We die." I repeated the plan. Simple. Clear. Final.
"Eleven fifty now. Ten minutes. Time to say final goodbyes." Young Thomas looked at his watch. Trembling.
Margaret ran to me. Hugged me. Sobbing. "I love you. I love you so much. Please don't go. Please don't die."
"I love you too. More than anything. But I have to. The world needs this. You need this. Future needs this." I held her. Crying too. "Be strong. Be brave. Be Luna. For me. Forever."
I hugged young Thomas. My grandson. My Guardian. "Protect her. Protect Margaret. Protect everyone. That's your job now."
"I will. I promise. I swear on my life." Thomas was crying. Strong. Worthy.
Derek hugged Luna. Long. Desperate. Loving. "I'll raise our babies right. I'll tell them about you. I'll make sure they know their mother was a hero."
"Thank you. For loving me. For giving me family. For being you." Luna kissed him. Final kiss. Forever kiss.
Sarah and Maya hugged their families. Nieces. Nephews. Everyone. Crying. Loving. Saying goodbye.
Eleven o'clock. Time. We moved to positions.
I took North. Sarah took South. Maya took East. Luna took West.
Perfect circle. Around the volcano's center. Around the rising point. Around destiny.
We joined hands. Through the bond. Through space. Through power. Connected. United. One.
The ground trembled. Shaking. Violent. The Ancient One was moving. Rising. Coming.
Eleven thirty. Trembling increased. Cracks appeared. In the ground. In the mountain. In reality.
"Stay strong. Stay focused. Stay ready." I sent through the bond. Commanding. Leading. Final orders.
Eleven forty-five. The cracks widened. Darkness seeped through. Not smoke. Not lava. Pure darkness. Living. Breathing. Evil.
"It's coming. It's almost here. Be ready." Luna sent. Scared. Brave. Perfect.
Eleven fifty-five. The darkness poured out. Thick. Cold. Wrong. The Ancient One rising.
It had no form. No shape. Just darkness. Pure evil. Living nightmare.
Then noon. The sun at its peak. Light at its strongest. Time.
"Now! Channel! Everything!" I screamed.
We released our power. All four Lunas. North. South. East. West. Combined. Massive. Total.
Silver light exploded. From each of us. Into the ground. Into the darkness. Into the Ancient One.
The darkness screamed. Not sound. Not voice. Just pure agony. Pure rage. Pure hate.
It fought back. Pushing against our power. Trying to break free. Trying to rise.
"Hold it! Push harder! Don't let it through!" Sarah screamed through the bond. Struggling. Straining.
We pushed. Harder. Deeper. More. Giving everything. Every ounce of power. Every bit of strength. Every piece of life.
The darkness weakened. Slowly. Gradually. Retreating. Going back down.
But it fought. Desperately. Violently. Pulling at our life force. Draining us. Killing us.
I felt it. My life leaving. My power fading. My existence ending.
Through the bond I felt Sarah. Maya. Luna. All dying. All fading. All giving everything.
"Almost there. Almost sealed. Hold on. Just a little more." Maya sent. Weakening. Dying. Fighting.
The darkness was almost gone. Almost sealed. Almost imprisoned.
But we were almost dead. Almost gone. Almost finished.
"I love you. All of you. Forever." I sent final message. Final words. Final goodbye.
"Love you too. Always. Beyond death." They sent back. United. Together. Eternal.
Then the seal completed. The darkness locked away. The Ancient One imprisoned. Forever.
We collapsed. All four. Same time. Life force gone. Power drained. Bodies empty.
I lay on the ground. Dying. Watching the sky. Beautiful blue sky. Clear. Peaceful. Perfect.
I heard screaming. Margaret. Thomas. Everyone. Running to us. Too late. Already dying.
Margaret reached me first. Held me. Crying. "No. No. Please don't go. Please stay."
"Can't. Already gone. But happy. Saved everyone. Saved you. Worth it." I could barely speak. Barely breathe. Barely exist.
"I'll make you proud. I'll be strong. I'll be Luna. I promise." Margaret sobbed.
"Already proud. Always proud. Forever proud." I touched her face. Final touch. Last touch.
I looked at Sarah. At Maya. At Luna. All dying. All peaceful. All smiling.
Through the bond we connected. One last time. One final moment. One eternal goodbye.
"We did it. We won. We saved everyone." Sarah sent. Fading. Happy.
"Together. Like always. Like everything. Like forever." Maya added. Peaceful. Complete.
"Best family. Best sisters. Best life." Luna finished. Grateful. Loving.
"Best ending. Best sacrifice. Best death." I agreed. Final thought. Final feeling. Final everything.
Then darkness. Not evil. Not Ancient One. Just peace. Just rest. Just ending.
I closed my eyes. Stopped breathing. Let go.
Lita Dillard Hartman. Luna. Hero. Mother. Grandmother. Sister.
Dead. Sacrificed. Eternal.
At fifty-five years old. After thirty-five years of fighting. After saving the world countless times.
Finally at rest. Finally at peace. Finally done.
Luna Triad. Sarah. Maya. Luna. Me. All gone. All dead. All heroes.
Sacrificed everything. Saved everyone. Ended perfectly.
The story was over. The journey complete. The legend finished.
Or so I thought.
