Chapter 3
Skylar’s POV
I looked at myself in the mirror, twirling around, the skirt of my dress moving along perfectly. I smirked as I looked at myself. I was dressed perfectly, I loved the sparkles on my baby blue dress, no doubt I’d be in the spotlight tonight, it is my birthday after all. Finally, I’m 18, I was ready to meet my mate, Roman… Only I still haven’t come across him, I saw him briefly at school but didn’t feel the whole connection. Maybe it’s because I was born around 4 pm so perhaps I wasn’t officially 18 yet. Yeah, that’s probably why. I looked outside the window and saw Roman heading into the house, perfect. I hurried to my door and opened it up, Roman was just about to pass by. “Hey Roman,” I smiled, twirling a strand of my hair between my fingers as I looked up at him. Roman seemed to have been in a hurry but stopped. Wasn’t my wolf supposed to go crazy right about now?
“Happy birthday, Skylar,” He said, smiling, his perfect white teeth showing a little.
“Thank you,” I smiled back at him then turned around, pulling my hair to one side, exposing my bareback. “Could you help me with the zipper?” I asked, I left it open deliberately.
“Uhm, sure,” Roman shrugged and stepped closer to me, his body heat radiating. I felt my heart beating faster as he got closer, his touch ghosted over my skin before he finally zipped it up, his fingertips lingering on my skin, but I felt no spark whatsoever. How could this be? He’s supposed to be mine!
“All good,” He patted my shoulder.
“Thanks,” I said annoyedly and walked away from him, leaving him with a frown on his face. I was beyond pissed right now. I walked away to go enjoy the rest of my party, not that it even meant much anymore. I was only excited to meet my mate. I will get him, one way or another.
…
Roman was a little confused, did he do something wrong with Skylar? He brushed it off and left her room, he had forgotten what he came to do inside and went to the back porch, looking over everyone then saw Tali standing not too far from him. She was busy chatting with another girl and a guy. Roman then remembered what he went inside for, he was thirsty. He saw a trail of untouched cups of sodas on the table by Tali and walked over to pick up one of them. He loved cherry soda and saw there was only one of them and picked that one up.
“What are you doing?” The redhead turned to Roman when she saw him taking her drink.
“Drinking, what does it look like, I’m doing?” Roman rolled his eyes and brought the cup close to his lips when Tali stopped him from doing so.
“That’s my soda,” She informed him and tried taking the cup from his hand but his grip on it was firm.
“I don’t see your name written on it,” Roman stated, looking around the cup then raising a brow at her. Was she planning on annoying him every chance she got?
“I don’t walk with a damn marker to mark what’s mine,” The girl replied, crossing her arms as she looked at him.
“How can you say it’s yours then?” He rolled his eyes and took a sip of the cherry soda.
“I went inside to get it because all they have is cola,” She pointed to the other cups with all but cherry soda.
“You can’t be too picky, you’re at a party, princess,” Roman reminded her and tapped her forehead, this time she caught his hand and tugged at it, pulling her towards him. He called her princess to tease her even though that was her title it was just the way he said it made it clear he was mocking her.
“Do that again and I will break your hand,” Tali warned, letting go of his hand and walking away to find something else to do.
Theo walked around with Ayla till they found some privacy between some of the trees. He turned to look at his friend and smiled at her, to him she was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. He knew he liked her, and he also knew that wouldn’t be fair to whoever his mate would be.
“Hey, did you do something different with your hair?” Ayla asked, frowning as she looked at the blonde.
“I ran out of hairspray actually and we were also running late so I wasn’t able to steal any of my mother’s,” Theo had a boyish smile on his lips as he ran his fingers through his hair.
“Ah I see, makes sense. You look handsome though,” Ayla replied, her taupe eyes taking in his features. A slight smirk on her lips after she complimented him, but no doubt would he make her regret that.
“Don’t I always?” Theo winked at her, uncrossing his arms.
“You have your moments, dork,” Ayla rolled her eyes playfully and nudged him to the side.
“Well you certainly look beautiful, but you already knew that,” Theo got a hold of her hand and twirled her around.
“Aren’t you charming,” She laughed, looking up at him when he stopped twirling her around.
“Got it from my dad,” Theo said, smiling as he looked down at her.
“We should probably head back; the speakers have a Bluetooth option. Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” Ayla let go of him and looked over her shoulder.
“I’ve thought about it but it’s Skylar’s birthday, we barely know her so uh let’s not get kicked from the party,” Theo rested his hand on her shoulder as he followed her back to the party.
“Aw fine, you’re right,” Ayla pouted.
Skylar still held some hope till midnight, hoping the mate bound would find a place but nothing happened, her wolf was the same as she has been forever. After cutting the cake she stormed up to her room to eat it, her friends had noticed she wasn’t around and knew something was up. Erin and Angelica knocked on the door before entering the room and sat down on her puff chairs and looked at her.
“Is everything okay?” Erin asked curiously, noticing her friend was down.
“Does it look like everything’s okay?” Skylar snapped at her, narrowing her eyes on her friends.
“Skylar, there’s no reason for you to be so rude,” Angelica reminded her friend.
“He’s not my mate. Roman’s not my mate, there go my dreams of being a luna,” Skylar sighed, a saddened look on her face. Her dreams were crushed, what happens now?
“Is he really that cute?” Erin asked, an unsure look on her face.
“Just because he isn’t your type doesn’t mean he’s not cute,” Skylar turned to her friend, raising a brow at her. Why couldn’t she be on her side? Why did it always seem like she was against her and her dreams?
“You’re right, it’s just maybe he’s not right for you,” Erin shrugged, in her eyes, she pictured her friend with someone. She warned her not to get too attached to the idea, but it was too late.
“She’s right, you two only talk from time to time,” Angelica mumbled, a little unsure as she didn’t know how her friend would take it.
“Yeah, but our conversations come so naturally we just bond easily you know,” Skylar defended, getting up and walking to the mirror to take out the pins in her hair.
“Sorry he’s not your mate, I’m sure whoever ends up being your mate will be an incredible guy deserving of you,” Erin said sincerely.
“No,” Skylar laughed. “I will make him my mate, regardless of what I’ll have to do,” She spoke in a serious tone.
Erin looked over at Angelica briefly, worried for her friend. Surely she was just joking, right? Skylar soon changed the topic about the cake she loved so much. Soon the party was over, and everyone took their leave. Roman waited by the car for his parents, they went to talk to Tristan and Ainsley. Tali walked to Roman and looked at him, letting out a loud sigh.
“What’s your problem now, princess?” Roman raised a brow at the redhead.
“Always you Roman, all my problems are you related,” Tali answered, tilting her head to the side a little as she looked at him.
“Wow, I’ll take that as a compliment,” The blonde smirked, turning to face her completely and leaned on the car.
“Goddess, you are so annoying,” Tali rolled her eyes and looked away from him.
“You’re the one who walked over here, if anything I’d assume you’re liking this,” Roman reminded her, poking her arm.
“Yeah right and pigs fly,” She laughed and pulled out the letter her parents needed her to hand over. “I came to give you this,” She handed over the letter to Roman. He frowned and looked at it.
“What is this? I thought I pulled away from these,” He asked as he read through the piece of paper.
“Not this one, you got chosen for it when you entered the competition,” Tali shrugged. She wondered why he wasn’t excited about this; most people usually celebrate it at least.
“Oh right…” He mumbled.
“Don’t worry, I’ll go easy on you,” Tali playfully punched his shoulder.
“Don’t get too cocky, I won the competition for a reason,” Roman folded the paperback in its form then patted her head with it.
“Yeah, because I wasn’t in it,” She moved his hand away and smirked. She sure had an ego matching his.
“Go home, it’s your bedtime, little girl,” He pointed to her car where her parents were calling for her.
