Chapter 87: Eighty Seven: The Wolf Awakens
Mara's POV
The world had gone silent. No breath, sound and pulse.
Just darkness, heavy, endless. I floated somewhere between death and memory, the scent of smoke and blood clinging to me.
My body no longer felt like mine. Every part of me burned and froze all at once.
Then I heard it.
A heartbeat, not mine, but His.
“Stay with me,” Ronald’s voice broke through the dark, rough, desperate. “Please, Mara… don’t do this. Not now.”
I wanted to answer him, to tell him I was still here, but my mouth wouldn’t move. My chest wouldn’t rise.
Then, beneath the stillness, another voice rose, deep, ancient, and wild.
You are not done yet.
A pulse tore through my veins like lightning. My wolf.
She wasn’t whispering anymore. She was roaring.
Pain flooded me, dragging me back to the surface. My eyes flew open.
The world exploded in silver.
The Silverfang blade beside me blazed to life, light bursting from its core like a star ripped open.
The runes across the ritual floor shattered one by one, cracking under the force of the power surging from my chest.
The Elders who still stood screamed. Some stumbled back; others tried to complete their severing chants, but their voices broke against the sound of my wolf’s growl filling the chamber.
I gasped, arching off the ground, light spilling from the wounds on my arms. My blood, silver, molten poured onto the broken runes, turning them into rivers of light.
“Mara!”
Ronald’s voice reached me through the chaos. He was on his knees beside me, hand on my shoulder, eyes wide with terror and awe. “What’s happening?”
I couldn’t speak. I could barely breathe. The blade pulsed again, once, twice before dissolving into mist, swirling around my body.
My wolf’s voice thundered inside me.
Let me in. Let us finish this.
I didn’t resist. I couldn’t.
A scream tore from my throat as my wolf surged free, not separating from me, but merging. Bone-deep, soul-deep.
The blade’s silver light wrapped around me, crawling up my arms, my chest, my throat. The air crackled with energy.
“Ronald..” Lucas’s voice shouted from somewhere in the hall, “the runes, they’re breaking!”
But Ronald didn’t move. His eyes were locked on me, wide and burning with something more than fear.
“Mara…” he whispered, voice trembling. “You’re glowing.”
I looked down.
Silver veins blazed beneath my skin, bright and alive, like lightning captured under flesh.
My hair floated in the air around me, my heartbeat synced with the pulsing glow.
The Elders shrieked. “She bears the mark! The Alpha curse!”
“Not a curse,” I growled, my voice not entirely my own. My wolf’s tone layered beneath mine, ancient and wild. “A birthright.”
I rose slowly to my feet, the chains that had bound me melting away into ash.
The nearest Elder raised his staff. “Abomination! You cannot be allowed to live!”
Before he could speak another word, the air around him rippled. A gust of energy swept through the chamber, pure force. The Elder’s staff splintered in his hands, and he was thrown back into the wall, bones snapping.
I didn’t even touch him.
The others faltered, fear twisting their faces.
“Stop her!” one shouted. “Before she becomes..”
“Too late,” Ronald cut in, his voice low, deadly.
I turned to him, and for a heartbeat, the world stilled.
Our eyes met, his dark and burning, mine silver and glowing and the bond between us snapped taut. It wasn’t just heat anymore. It was fire and storm and something older than both of us.
He crawled toward me, his body trembling, blood streaking his side. “I felt you dying,” he rasped. “And then..”
“I didn’t die,” I whispered. “I became.”
His wolf growled low, deep in his chest, responding to the power rolling off me.
Then, from the far end of the hall, an Elder screamed and hurled a rune-spear. It shot straight toward Ronald’s chest.
My hand moved before I thought.
Silver light burst from my palm, catching the spear mid-air. The weapon froze inches from his heart, then dissolved into dust.
Ronald stared, breathless. “You..”
“I said no one touches you,” I said.
The ground shook violently beneath us. Cracks split the stone as the Blood Moon’s light poured through the broken ceiling, igniting the silver in my veins.
My wolf howled inside me.
Claim it. The Moon sees you.
A silver mark, the shape of a crescent entwined with flame, flared on my collarbone. Pain seared through me, but it felt like the truth.
The Elders fell silent. One dropped to his knees. “The Silverfang Alpha… reborn.”
The title cut through me like a blade. Alpha. Me.
Ronald’s voice came quietly, awed and certain. “No. Not reborn. Returned.”
The chamber seemed to bow to the sound of his words. Even the flames trembled.
Then the silence broke, distant horns, shouts from outside the fortress. Lucas burst in, eyes wide. “Alpha! The Council’s armies, they’re coming! Thousands!”
Ronald rose to his feet, his hand brushing mine. “Let them come.”
I turned toward the light bleeding through the ruins of the roof. The Blood Moon glowed red above us, its reflection alive in the silver patterns running through my skin.
For the first time in my life, I didn’t feel hunted.
I felt whole.
And as the wind roared through the shattered walls, my voice joined it, strong and fierce.
“Silverfang rises tonight.”
