Chapter 8: The Eyes that follow

The room stayed quiet for a long time after that, as Lyra didn’t move much because the stillness felt soft like if she shifted even a little too quickly something invisible might crack again, and Valerius stayed close beside her without crowding her, not touching too much but also not puling away where he

The small safe room humed quietly with low power, and the dim lights flickered once before settling into a weak glow that made shadows stretch along the walls, as Lyra let out a slow breath she didn’t realize she had been holding as her eyes moved carefully across the space, checking everything again even though she had already checked it before, because that was what she did, she checked and checked again until she felt a little bit sure

Valerius watched her quietly the whole time, his gaze following every small movement she made like it mattered more than anything else in the room

“You keep checking,” he said softly, his voice calmer now but still rough at the edges

Lyra didn’t look at him as she replied

“I have to,” she said, her voice steady but quiet, “because no one else will”

Valerius tilted his head slightly at that, like he wanted to say something more but decided not to, and the silence stretched again, not heavy this time, just

Lyra finally sat down again, her back resting lightly against the cold wall as her hands settled in her lap, and for a moment she allowed herself to just sit without thinking too much, without planning the next step or the next escape

But the quiet didn’t last

Unit 7’s voice suddenly broke through her thoughts, carrying urgency

“Alert: residual tracking signal detected”

Lyra’s head lifted instantly, her whole body going still as her calm disappeared in a second

“What?” she asked quickly, her voice sharp

Valerius changed too, his tired posture vanishing as his eyes sharpened and his ears twitched slightly, his entire presence shifting into something alert and dangerous like a switch had been flipped inside him

“Where?” he asked lowly

“Source unclear. Signal fragmented. Possible tagging during exposure event”

Lyra’s chest tightened as her mind raced, “The explosion…” she murmured under her breath

Valerius’s jaw tightened slightly, “They marked us,” he said and Lyra stood up quickl, moved toward the panel, her fingers moving fast as she pulled up data streams and scanned for anything that didn’t look right, her eyes narrowing as lines of information flickered across the screen

“Can you isolate it?” she asked hopefully

“Attempting… interference detected”

Lyra frowned deeply, “That means it’s not passive,” she said, her voice more serious, “it’s active, which means they’re not just tracking us, they’re searching”

Valerius stood up slowly despite the strain it clearly caused him, his movements heavy as he stepped closer to her

“They’re watching,” he suddenly said

Lyra nodded once, her focus still locked on the data, “Yes… but not clearly,” she added, “it’s like they’re trying to find us through noise, like they can hear something but can’t see it yet”

Valerius looked at the screen briefly, then back at her, “Then we cut the noise,” he said sharpl b ut Lyra hesitated, her fingers pausing mid-motion

“If we shut everything down, we lose the cloak,” she explained

“And if we don’t?” he asked calmly

Lyra didn’t answer right away because she already knew the answer. Then she exhaled slowly, “They find us anyway,” she admitted

Valerius didn’t hesitate

“Then we move,” he finalised which lyra agreed to

“Then we move,” she repeated

They didn’t waste any time after that, Lyra quickly packed what little they needed, moving fast but carefully while Valerius stood near the door like a silent guard, his posture steady even though his body was still recovering, and every few seconds his gaze shifted back to her like he was making sure she hadn’t disappeared

“You shouldn’t be standing,” Lyra said without looking at him

“You shouldn’t be targeted,” he replied almost immediately

Lyra paused briefly at that, but she didn’t argue Instead, she finished packing and turned toward him, “Ready?” she asked and valerius ave a small nod

“I always am,” he responded

Lyra didn’t fully believe that, but she didn’t say it out loud

They stepped out of the safe room together, and the door closed behind them with a quiet sound that sealed the space as if it had never been opened, and the underground tunnel stretched ahead of them, long and dark, with only faint emergency lights guiding their path

Lyra moved first, her steps quick , and Valerius followed closely behind her, his presence steady and protective like a shadow that refused to leave her side

For a while, nothing happened, and the only sounds were their footsteps and the faint hum of distant systems buried deep in the structure

Then suddenly—

Valerius stopped and Lyra turned immediately, “What is it?” she whispered

His ears twitched sharply, and his gaze darkened, “They’re closer,” he points out, immediately Lyra stomach tightened

“How close?” she asked

Valerius didn’t answer immediately, and when he finally did, his voice was quieter, “Too close”

That was enoug

“Run,” Lyra said instantly and they ran

Their footsteps echoed through the tunnel as they moved faster, turning sharp corners and slipping through narrow paths, and Lyra’s mind raced as she tried to remember every route she had mapped, every hidden exit she had created for a moment like this, even though she had never imagined she would be using it like s

Behind them, a sound followed, soft at first, then sharper Like metal scraping slowly against metal

“They found the signal,” Lyra said breathlessly

“They found you,” Valerius corrected

Lyra didn’t respond to that, she just ran faster

The tunnel split ahead, and Lyra stopped suddenly, her eyes darting between the two paths as she calculated quickl

“Left leads to the surface,” she said quickly, “right leads deeper undergroun”

Valerius looked at her without hesitation, “They’ll expect you to go up,” he said and Lyra nodded once

“So we go down,” she finished and they turned right

The air grew colder as they moved deeper, and the lights became fewer and dimmer, the shadows stretched longer across the walls, but Lyra didn’t slow down, and Valerius stayed close behind her, his senses sharp even through his exhaustion

Then suddenly—

A figure dropped from above

Lyra barely had time to react before Valerius moved, his body snapping forward as his hand caught the attacker mid-air and slammed them into the ground with enough force to crack the surface beneath them.

The figure didn’t cry out

Didn’t hesitate

It moved again immediately then another figure appeared and another making them threee in total, all dressed in black and silent

Valerius stepped in front of Lyra without thinking

“Stay back,” he ordered and Lyra stepped back this time but she didn’t stop watching

The first attacker lunged forward as Valerius moved faster. Even weakened, he was still dangerous

His tails flashed out, striking with precision, knocking one attacker back and then another, his movements sharp but slightly slower than before, like his body was struggling to keep up with his instincts

As a blade came too close Lyra’s breath caught in her throat but valerius wisted just in time, barely avoiding the strike, but the movement cost him, and he staggered slightly

That was all the opening the third attacker needed as they moved in and without thinking Lyra stepped forward

“Stop!” she shouted and everything paused for a second

The attacker hesitated and in that single moment—

Valerius finished it, the last figure hit the ground, dead

The tunnel fell quiet again as valerius tood there, breathing heavier now, his shoulders rising and falling as the strain showed clearly, and Lyra rushed to him without hesitation

“You’re hurt,” she quickly said

“I’m alive,” he replied hoarsely

“That’s not the same thing,” she shot back which made valerius look at her

Then unexpectedl—

A gave a small, tired smile, “You’re loud,” he said again

Lyra blinked, then frowned slightly, “You’re impossible,” she pushes

But she didn’t move away from him

Behind them, deeper in the tunnels, something else moved slowly in the shadows, something bigger and quieter , something that didn’t rush like the others

And far above, beyond the city and the clouds, a message was sent, and orders were given in calm voices that did not hesitate

This time, they were not sending hunter, they were sending something that doesn’t miss

Lyra looked ahead at the darkggg path in front of them, her chest rising slowly as she steadied her breathing again

“We keep moving,” she says and valerius nodded once

“Yes,” he replied
