Chapter 170: The Envelope

Chapter 171 – The Envelope

No one moved.

The wind swept across the courtyard, carrying dead leaves over the concrete as every pair of eyes remained fixed on the sealed envelope in the stranger's hand. It looked ordinary. Plain cream paper. No markings except Aria's name written in neat black ink.

Yet it felt heavier than anything she had ever seen.

Daniel took one cautious step forward. "Put it on the ground."

The stranger didn't argue. He bent slowly, placed the envelope on the pavement, and stepped back several feet with his hands visible.

"I didn't come here to fight."

Daniel didn't lower his guard.

"Then start talking."

"I've already said too much."

Aria frowned. "If you know something about me, then tell me."

The stranger looked at her, and for the first time his calm expression showed something else.

Regret.

"There are answers that sound impossible until you see the proof."

His eyes dropped to the envelope.

"That's why I brought it."

Daniel motioned to one of the security officers, who carefully approached, inspected the envelope, and scanned it for explosives or tracking devices.

"Nothing unusual," the officer reported after several tense moments.

Daniel picked it up himself.

It felt surprisingly thick.

Several folded pages rested inside.

He hesitated before handing it to Aria.

"If anything feels wrong, stop reading."

She nodded, her fingers trembling as she broke the seal.

Inside was a single photograph.

The moment she looked at it, the color drained from her face.

Daniel caught her shoulder before she stumbled backward.

"What is it?"

She couldn't answer.

The photograph showed a little girl standing beside two adults outside an old stone building.

The little girl was unmistakably Aria.

The woman beside her smiled warmly.

The man stood with one hand resting on the child's shoulder.

But that wasn't what stole the air from her lungs.

Written across the bottom of the photograph in faded blue ink were six words.

She must never know the truth.

Daniel took the photograph carefully.

"Who are these people?"

Aria swallowed hard.

"I... I don't know."

She stared at the faces again, desperate for a memory that refused to come.

"I've never seen them before."

The stranger finally spoke.

"That's because someone made sure you wouldn't remember."

A heavy silence settled over the courtyard.

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"Are you telling me her memories were altered?"

The stranger held his gaze.

"I'm telling you that everything Aria believes about the beginning of her life is incomplete."

Aria felt the ground shift beneath her.

Everything she thought she knew...

Every memory she trusted...

Every answer she had accepted...

Suddenly, none of it felt certain anymore.

And deep inside, where the darkness had once lived, a single terrifying question began to grow.

If her past had been hidden from her...

What else had been stolen?
