Chapter 44: The Traitor Within

The private plane touched down at a small runway outside New York at 2:17 AM. No lights, no radio touch. Viktor stepped onto American land with his gun drawn, scanning the darkness. Luca followed close behind, their breath making small clouds in the cold night air.

"Clear," whispered the pilot, one of their few remaining trusted contacts.

Katerina had stayed behind in Prague to track Nikolai's moves and buy them time to save Anya. The clock was running.

"Car's waiting," Luca said, pointing to a black SUV parked near a hangar. "Tony sent it."

Viktor paused. "How do we know it's really from Tony?"

They approached slowly. The driver's window rolled down, showing a familiar face – Luca's cousin Sal, his left eye swollen shut from a recent beating.

"Thank God you're back," Sal said, his voice shaking. "It's all falling apart."

The drive into the city was tense. Sal filled them in on what had happened since they'd been gone.

"Someone's been giving orders in your names," he stated. "Changing security codes, moving shipments, contacting our allies. Most people think it's really you."

"And Tony?" Luca asked.

Sal's hands tightened on the driving wheel. "He's trying to hold things together, but it's bad. Four of our warehouses have been hit. Six men dead."

Instead of going to their penthouse headquarters, Sal drove them to an old brownstone in Brooklyn – a safe house so secret only five people knew about it.

Tony was waiting inside, looking like he hadn't slept in days. His face lit up when he saw them.

"You're alive," he said, embracing Luca. "We thought—"

"We know," Viktor cut in. "Where's Anya?"

Tony's face darkened. "She was taken three days ago. Left to meet a contact and never came back. Then we got the video."

"We saw it," Luca said. "Nikolai has her."

Viktor paced the room, his mind racing. "We need to see what damage has been done. Who's still loyal? Who's turned against us?"

Tony spread a map on the table, marking places with red and blue pins. "Red is what we've lost. Blue is what we still control."

There was too much red.

"Someone helped Nikolai do this," Luca said, his voice cold. "Someone who knows our operation inside and out."

Viktor nodded grimly. "A traitor."

They spent the rest of the night putting up surveillance on their own people. Everyone was a suspect. They hacked into security cameras, tracked phone calls, and watched bank accounts.

By morning, they had a list of possible traitors:

1\. Dmitri, Viktor's head of security, who had changed all the access codes without proper permission.

2\. Maria, Luca's finance expert, who had moved big sums of money offshore.

3\. Tony himself, who couldn't explain why he'd been seen speaking with one of Nikolai's known associates.

4\. Even Anya – her arrest seemed too convenient, too staged.

"I don't believe it," Viktor said when Luca mentioned Anya might be involved. "She's been loyal for years."

"So was my brother," Luca reminded him. "Yet Marco betrayed me without hesitation."

Tension grew between them as they investigated their inner group. Each new piece of evidence pointed in a different way, nothing quite adding up.

"It's like we're being played," Viktor realized as they watched security footage. "This isn't just betrayal – it's misdirection."

Luca nodded slowly. "Someone wants us to suspect everyone."

They needed to draw out the real enemy. Viktor came up with a plan – they would feed different false information to each suspect and see which details reached Nikolai.

The trap was set. To Dmitri, they mentioned a weapons shipment coming at the docks. To Maria, they revealed a secret bank account in Switzerland. To Tony, they spoke of a meeting with their West Coast friends.

Now all they could do was wait.

The call came at midnight. A burner phone – the one they'd set up especially for their trap.

"We have movement," said their surveillance man. "Someone just accessed the dock security cameras."

Viktor and Luca rushed to the dock, staying in the shadows. A small group of armed men was waiting near the spot where the fake weapons shipment was meant to arrive.

"Nikolai's men," Luca whispered, recognizing two of them from Berlin.

But who had tipped them off? They had their answer when a car pulled up and a familiar person stepped out.

"Tony," Viktor breathed, disbelief in his voice.

Luca's face hardened as he watched his old friend shake hands with Nikolai's lieutenant.

"I never thought..." Luca couldn't finish the sentence.

They retreated before being noticed, their hearts heavy. Back at the safe house, they reviewed what they knew.

"It doesn't make sense," Viktor maintained. "Why would Tony betray us after all these years?"

Luca stared at the surveillance pictures. "Look at his face. He seems... afraid."

A new option dawned on them – what if Tony was being forced to help Nikolai?

Their speculation was halted by an alert from their security system. Someone was approaching the safe house.

They drew their weapons, taking places on either side of the door. The lock clicked, and the door swung open.

Anya stumbled in, her clothes torn, her face hurt. She fell into Viktor's arms.

"How did you escape?" Viktor asked, helping her to a chair.

"They... they let me go," she gasped. "Nikolai said to give you a message."

Luca handed her water, distrust still clouding his face. "What message?"

"He knows about the seal. He knows where you've hidden it." Anya looked straight at Viktor. "And he says if you don't bring it to him by tomorrow, he'll kill everyone you care about. Starting with Tony."

Viktor and Luca traded alarmed looks.

"Tony is a hostage?" Luca asked.

Anya nodded weakly. "Has been for weeks. They've been forcing him to help them, threatening his family."

"So if Tony isn't the traitor," Viktor said slowly, "then who is?"

Anya's eyes filled with tears. "That's the worst part. It's—"

The windows exploded inward as flashbang bombs bounced across the floor. The room filled with blinding light and loud noise.

Through the chaos, Viktor saw dark figures coming through the windows and doors. In the lead was a face he recognized quickly – but couldn't believe.

"No," he mumbled as the truth hit him like a physical blow. "It can't be..."
