Chapter 153
Author's POV
The atmosphere in the safe house was electric, the air buzzing with tension and determination. Ethan spread the documents they had retrieved from Russo’s penthouse across the table. The room’s lighting cast sharp shadows, mirroring the high-stakes mission unfolding before them.
“These files are explosive,” Yelena said, her voice a mix of excitement and astonishment. “They don’t just contain names, they spell out the entire operation. The money trails, the operatives, the secret meetings. It’s all here, everything.”
Matteo leaned over her shoulder, scanning the pages. “This is the kind of information that could bring their entire network to its knee. If we use it wisely.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened as he stared at the list of names. Each one represented a cornerstone of the syndicate’s power structure– billionaires, politicians, and military officials.
“We can’t sit on this for long. We need to start taking them down one by one.”
Yelena agreed. “However, we need to be smart and strategic about it. If we move too fast or make a mistake, they’ll go underground or strike back harder.”
Ethan straightened, his voice firm. “That’s a good point. But we can start with ones who won't see it coming. We’ll start with the most vulnerable targets and work our way up.”
The first name on the list was a tech mogul named Gregory Langston, a man whose company provided secret communication systems to the syndicate. If they could take him out, they would be dealing a big blow to them.
Yelena pulled up Langston’s schedule on her laptop, her fingers dancing across the keyboard. “He’s hosting a private gala tonight at his downtown skyscraper. Security will be tight, but it’s our best chance to get close to him.”
Matteo nodded, checking his weapon. “I’ve always enjoyed gate crashing parties.”
Ethan glanced at Lila, who was sitting quietly, her hand resting on her stomach. He crouched in front of her, his eyes softening. “Are you sure you’re up for this? You don’t have to come.”
She met his gaze with unwavering determination. “This isn’t just your fight, Ethan. I’m in this with you, no matter what.”
Ethan nodded, his respect for her growing even deeper. “Then let’s do this.” he kissed her hand.
The gala was a spectacle of wealth and power, with glittering chandeliers, champagne flutes, and elegantly dressed attendees. Ethan adjusted the cufflinks on his tailored suit as he stepped into the grand ballroom, his sharp eyes scanning the crowd for Langston.
Lila walked beside him, her dark gown accentuating her fierce presence. Matteo and Yelena followed closely, blending seamlessly into the sea of elites.
“Langston is at the far end, near the bar,” Yelena whispered through the earpiece.
Ethan’s gaze locked onto him, a tall figure with silver hair and an arrogant smile. He was surrounded by a group of influential people, all laughing and clinking glasses.
As they approached, Lila slipped away, positioning herself strategically near the exits. Matteo went toward the security personnel, his presence a silent but effective distraction.
Ethan moved up to the bar, his posture relaxed but his mind razor-sharp. “Gregory Langston,” he said calmly, holding out a hand.
“Ethan Cross. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.” He greeted. Langston turned, his smile faltering slightly. “Mr. Cross, I wasn’t expecting you here.”
Ethan shrugged, his expression relaxed. “I like to keep things interesting.”
Before Langston could respond, Yelena’s voice came through the earpiece. “Ethan, two armed guards are heading your way.”
Ethan’s grip on his drink tightened, but he didn’t let his composure slip. “Excuse me for a moment,” he said to Langston, stepping away casually.
As he turned, he caught sight of the guards weaving through the crowd, their eyes locked on him. Matteo intercepted them, engaging them in conversation while subtly leading them away from the main floor.
“Langston knows something’s up,” Yelena warned. “You need to move now.”
Ethan nodded, slipping back to Langston and grabbing his arm. “We need to talk. Somewhere private.”
Langston hesitated, but Ethan’s grip was unyielding. “Now,” he said, his voice low and commanding.
The private lounge was dimly lit, its walls adorned with expensive artwork. Ethan closed the door behind them, his calm demeanor masking the storm brewing inside him.
“What is this about?” Langston demanded, his tone defensive.
Ethan didn’t waste time. He pulled out a photograph from the files they had taken, an image of Langston shaking hands with one of the syndicate’s top operatives. “Care to explain this.”
Langston’s face sank, his bravado crumbling. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Ethan stepped closer, his voice cold. “Don’t play games with me. We know you have been supplying the syndicate with technology to keep their operations a secret. Start talking, or I’ll make sure you never leave this room.”
Langston swallowed hard, his eyes darting to the door. “You don’t understand. They forced me into it. If I didn’t comply with them, they would have destroyed me.”
Ethan’s gaze didn’t waver. “And how many lives have been destroyed because of you? Start mentioning the names, Langston. Who’s pulling the strings?”
Langston hesitated, his fear warring with his self-preservation. But he finally spoke. “There’s a man, Alexander Vaughn. He’s one of the secret leaders. He controls the financial operations, the bribes, everything.”
Ethan’s mind raced, the name ringing a bell from the files they had seen earlier. “Where can I find him?”
Langston shook his head. “You want to go after him? Vaughn is untouchable. If you go after him, you’ll be signing your own death warrant.”
Ethan leaned in, his voice a deadly whisper. “That’s my choice to make.”
Before Langston could say more, a loud crash echoed from the ballroom. Ethan’s earpiece crackled. “We have a ugly situation down here” Yelena said, her voice urgent.
Ethan grabbed Langston by the collar. “Stay here,” he ordered before rushing out of the lounge.
The ballroom was in chaos. Armed men had stormed in, their faces masked and their weapons targeted on the crowd. Matteo was already engaged in a firefight, using the pillars for cover as he took down the attackers one by one.
Lila was crouched behind an overturned table, her eyes sharp as she provided cover for Yelena, who was trying to disable the attackers’ comms.
Ethan didn’t hesitate. He drew his gun, his movements precise as he joined the fight. The sound of gunfire was deafening, but his focus never wavered.
Within minutes, the attackers were subdued, their bodies sprawled across the marble floor. The crowd began to scatter, panic thick in the air.
Ethan’s eyes narrowed, scanning the room, his heart pounding until his eyes landed on Lila. She was unharmed, her gaze meeting his with a mixture of relief and joy.
Yelena approached, holding tight her laptop to her chest. “I managed to intercept their communications. This wasn’t just a random attack. They were here for Langston.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened. “Then we’re running out of time. We need to leave now with Vaughn before they realize we’re onto him.”
As they regrouped, Ethan knew the fight was far from over, but the syndicate’s grip weakened with every step they took. The truth was within reach, and he wasn’t going to stop until the syndicate was destroyed, no matter the cost.
