Chapter 24: The Beast of the Shadows
The creature let out a deafening roar, and her mark flared, signaling the start of her next battle.
The air grew heavy with tension as the massive creature towered before Selene and her companions. Its form was a twisted amalgamation of wolf and shadow, its eyes glowing a sickly green. Tendrils of darkness pulsed and swirled around it like living extensions, each one humming with malevolent energy.
She could feel the weight of its power pressing against her chest, but she stood her ground. The Source pulsed within her, ready to be unleashed.
“What is that thing?” Kalen asked, his voice low.
Daemon stepped forward, his face grim. “It’s a Shadow Warden—an ancient guardian of the Source. It exists to test those who claim its power.”
Her heart pounded as the creature growled, the sound reverberating through the temple. “Another test?” she muttered under her breath. “Haven’t I proven myself enough?”
The Shadow Warden snarled, its massive claws digging into the stone floor as it prepared to attack.
Daemon’s voice cut through the tension. “The Source is testing your will to protect, not just your strength. This is the final trial, Selene. If you falter, the Source will reject you—and this creature will destroy everything.”
Selene’s grip on her power tightened. The weight of responsibility pressed against her, but she refused to let it crush her. She had fought too hard, endured too much, to fail now.
“Then I’ll pass,” she said firmly. “No matter what.
The Shadow Warden lunged with terrifying speed, its claws swiping at her. She dodged to the side, the tendrils of darkness snapping at her heels. Kalen shifted instantly, his wolf form leaping between her and the creature, jaws snapping at its tendrils.
She focused, calling on the Source. Energy surged through her veins, and with a burst of light, she sent a shockwave toward the creature. The blast hit its chest, forcing it back a few steps, but it quickly recovered, its eyes blazing with fury.
Daemon and the others joined the fight, their weapons glowing faintly with enchanted energy. They struck at the creature’s tendrils, working to keep it at bay while she prepared her next attack.
But the Shadow Warden was relentless. It lashed out with its claws, sending Daemon sprawling across the floor. Aiden barely avoided a swipe, his blade carving into one of the creature’s tendrils before he was forced to retreat.
Kalen growled, his wolf form darting in to bite at the creature’s leg. The Shadow Warden roared, tossing him aside with a flick of its massive paw.
“Kalen!” Selene cried out, her heart lurching as he hit the ground hard.
He shifted back into his human form, blood dripping from a gash on his shoulder. “I’m fine,” he said through gritted teeth. “Focus on the fight, Selene. You’re the only one who can end this.”
She nodded, determination hardening her resolve.
The Source pulsed within her, urging her to let go of her fear. Selene closed her eyes, focusing on the connection she had forged with it. The energy grew stronger, wrapping around her like a second skin.
When she opened her eyes, they glowed with silver light, her mark burning brightly against her skin. She stepped forward, the ground trembling beneath her feet.
“Hey!” she called, her voice ringing with authority. “You want me? Then come and get me!”
The Shadow Warden turned its full attention to her, its glowing eyes narrowing. It charged, the air crackling with dark energy.
She stood her ground, raising her hands as the Source’s power surged through her. A barrier of light erupted around her just as the creature struck, its claws bouncing off the shield with a deafening crash.
The force of the impact sent shockwaves through the temple, but she held firm.
“It’s working!” Aiden shouted. “Keep it up, Selene!”
The creature roared, slamming against the barrier again and again. Each strike weakened the shield, cracks forming in the glowing light. Selene gritted her teeth, sweat dripping down her face as she poured more energy into the barrier.
“I can’t hold this forever,” she muttered, her voice strained.
Daemon stepped forward, his sword glowing with a faint blue light. “You don’t have to. We’ll buy you time—focus on finding its weakness!”
She nodded, letting the barrier drop just as the Shadow Warden struck again. It stumbled forward, momentarily off balance, and Daemon took the opportunity to drive his blade into one of its tendrils. The creature howled, dark energy spilling from the wound like smoke.
“It’s vulnerable when the tendrils are severed!” Daemon shouted.
Selene seized the opportunity, summoning a spear of light in her hands. With a swift motion, she hurled it at the creature’s chest. The spear struck true, piercing its shadowy form and sending another wave of energy rippling through the air.
The Shadow Warden staggered, its movements growing slower.
Selene could feel the Source guiding her, showing her the path to victory. The creature’s tendrils were the key—each one severed weakened it further.
She darted forward, dodging the creature’s claws as she slashed at one of the remaining tendrils with a blade of light. The tendril disintegrated, and the creature roared in pain.
Aiden and Daemon joined the attack, their weapons carving into the remaining tendrils while Kalen distracted the creature from the front.
She focused all her energy on the final tendril, her mark glowing brighter than ever. She leapt into the air, driving her blade down with all her strength.
The tendril shattered, and the creature let out a deafening roar as its form began to dissolve.
The Shadow Warden collapsed, its massive body breaking apart into swirling tendrils of shadow. But Selene could feel that it wasn’t truly gone—not yet.
The guardian’s voice echoed in her mind. “The Source must be claimed with resolve. Strike now, or lose everything.”
She stepped forward, summoning the last of her strength. She raised her hands, channeling the Source’s energy into a single, powerful strike.
“This ends now!” she shouted, unleashing a beam of pure light that engulfed the creature.
The temple shook as the light consumed the Shadow Warden, its roar fading into silence. When the light finally dimmed, the creature was gone.
She collapsed to her knees, her body trembling from exhaustion. Kalen rushed to her side, his arms steadying her.
“You did it,” he said, his voice filled with awe.
She looked up at him, a faint smile on her lips. “We did it.”
As the dust settled, Daemon approached, his expression somber. “The Shadow Warden is gone, but the Source’s power is not yet fully yours.”
Selene frowned, confusion flickering across her face. “What do you mean?”
Before Daemon could answer, the ground beneath them trembled once more, and a deep, resonant voice filled the air.
“The true test has only just begun.”
Her heart sank as a massive, glowing symbol appeared on the temple floor, its light growing brighter by the second.
The symbol’s light engulfed her and her companions, and she realized with dread that their journey was far from over.
