Chapter 27: Meeting the pack
Leandra's heart pounded in her chest as she stepped through the threshold into the pack house, her nerves buzzing with the weight of what was happening. The room was filled with the eyes of curious wolves, their gazes like whispers in the back of her mind. She felt they were waiting for something—for her to prove herself or, worse, to stumble.
Leandra walked alongside Sultan as they moved deeper into the pack house, her mind racing after the encounter with Lyssa. She couldn't shake the unease that had settled in her chest. The way Lyssa looked at her, like she was an outsider who didn't belong, stirred a mix of anger and insecurity in her.
"Is this what it will be like?" she wondered. "Constantly having to prove myself, to show that I'm worthy of being here, worthy of being with Sultan?"
She glanced at Sultan, who radiated calm authority beside her, his hand occasionally brushing against her back as they walked. His presence was reassuring, grounding her, but the pressure of the situation was still heavy. Meeting his pack was an overwhelming thought, and Lyssa's thinly veiled disdain had already stirred a quiet storm of doubt in her chest.
"Sultan may have confidence in me," she thought, "but how long before someone else tries to challenge me?"
Beside her, Sultan's authoritative figure and towering frame moved through the various rooms with the ease of someone who knew exactly how much power he held. His hand brushed against her back again, sending a pleasurable shiver to her core. It also served as a quiet reminder that he was there. He wasn't just there to protect her; he was there to guide and walk this new path with her.
Leandra drew a deep breath, reminding herself of her promise to him and herself. She would meet these challenges head-on, but she would also do it in her own way. She couldn't afford to be timid or unsure. If she appeared that, then more of the pack would have doubts about her.
But before she could linger on those thoughts, Sultan leaned closer, his voice low and reassuring. "Before we meet the whole pack, I want to introduce you to a few key people first, my advisors of sorts. My Beta, Delta, and Gamma. They are my most trusted advisors and will be your strongest allies."
Leandra nodded, grateful for the slight reprieve from the intense gazes of the pack. "What are their roles exactly?"
Sultan smiled faintly, his amber eyes flicking toward a group standing near the back of the room. "My Beta is second-in-command; he's my right-hand man who helps me with paperwork and disputes within the pack, carries out my commands, and steps in when I'm not around or decisions need to be made quickly. My Delta oversees training, emergency drills, border patrol, and discipline, ensuring the pack remains strong and focused. My Gamma handles strategic planning and is often the mind behind our alliances and negotiations." I have other advisors, such as the Werewolf council, who advise the whole community, not just our pack, so you won't meet any of them today.
Leandra's eyebrows rose slightly, and her heart fluttered at Sultan, who was already calling the pack theirs. "So, these are the people who make everything run smoothly."
Sultan chuckled. "Exactly. They're essential to the pack's survival, and they are also my best friends. They'll be essential to you, too."
Leandra swallowed nervously but nodded. Sultan led her toward the back of the room, where three individuals stood together, each exuding a different kind of presence. As they approached, all conversation between them halted, and they turned their attention toward Sultan and Leandra.
The first man to step forward was tall and broad-shouldered, with a clean-shaven face, tan skin, and striking hazel eyes that seemed to assess everything around him. His dark hair was cropped short with waves, and he carried himself with quiet confidence.
"This is Cameron," Sultan said, introducing him with a nod. "He's my Beta and has been with me since the beginning."
Cameron offered Leandra a respectful nod, his voice deep. "It's an honor to meet you, Leandra. Sultan speaks highly of you." His gaze was steady, and though he didn't smile, his demeanor showed no hostility.
Leandra smiled back, feeling the tension in her chest ease. "Thank you. It's good to meet you, too."
Cameron gave a short nod, then added, "I understand this must be overwhelming, but if you need anything—guidance or help to adjust to the pack—I'm here. We all want what's best for the pack, including you."
Sultan's hand brushed against Leandra's lower back, a silent encouragement. "Cameron has been my right hand through countless challenges. He's loyal, disciplined, and knows the pack inside out. You can rely on him."
Leandra gave a quick nod of thanks, appreciating Camden's calm presence and taking mental notes of the people he introduced her to. Then, Sultan gestured toward the next man, who had been watching her curiously.
"And this is Dorian," Sultan continued, his tone shifting slightly as if he were introducing an old friend. "My Delta. He's in charge of training the pack's warriors and performing various other duties."
Dorian was leaner than Camden, but his physique spoke of raw strength and agility. His dark brown hair was a little longer, pulled back into a messy knot at the base of his neck, and a faint stubble lined his jaw. His sharp green eyes held a mischievous glint, and when he smiled at Leandra, it was warm but with an edge of playfulness.
"Huh….So, this is the new future Luna we've been expecting," Dorian said, crossing his arms over his chest as he studied her with interest. "I've got to admit, you don't look like a fierce warrior. But looks can be deceiving."
Leandra blinked, caught off guard by his casual tone, but then a tiny smirk tugged at her lips. "I've never claimed to be a warrior. But I don't need to be one to earn respect."
Dorian's eyes sparkled with amusement, and he laughed low. "Fair enough. Sultan wouldn't have chosen you if you didn't have something special. Besides, it's not just about fighting. Being Luna is about heart—and strength of a different kind."
Sultan grinned faintly, clearly pleased with the way the conversation was unfolding. "Dorian can be... a bit informal at times, but he's the best there is at what he does. He'll be helping you train."
Leandra nodded, feeling relief and apprehension at the idea of training. "I'll take all the help I can get."
Dorian winked. "You'll do fine. Just don't be afraid to push back. I like a challenge."
Next, Sultan turned to the last figure in the group, a woman with dark, smooth skin and sleek black hair that fell in waves over her shoulders. Her eyes were a deep, piercing brown, and her posture was straight and poised, exuding quiet confidence. Unlike Dorian, she didn't smile as she regarded Leandra, but her gaze was not unkind—just observant.
"This is Samara," Sultan said, his tone respectful. "My Gamma. She's the strategist behind our alliances and negotiations with other packs."
Samara inclined her head slightly, her voice soft but with a quiet authority that demanded respect. "It's good to meet you, Leandra. Sultan has chosen well."
Leandra smiled, grateful for Samara's acceptance. "Thank you. I hope I can live up to your expectations."
Samara's gaze held steady. "You will. But it won't be easy. The role of Luna is more than just being the Alpha's mate. You will have to make decisions that may not always be popular, and you will need to stand firm in the face of opposition. The pack will look to you for guidance and nurturing, especially when the Alpha is away."
Leandra's stomach tightened slightly, the weight of what Samara said settling over her. "I understand. I'll do my best."
Samara's expression softened slightly, a faint smile touching her lips. "And that's all we can ask for."
Sultan stepped closer to Leandra, his hand resting lightly on her back again, a constant source of support. "These three are the core of our leadership. They will help guide you, and you can trust them as much as you trust me."
Leandra nodded, feeling a mix of relief and determination. She could rely on these people who had stood by Sultan through thick and thin. But she also knew that earning their respect—and the respect of the entire pack—would take time.
