Chapter 57

Layla's POV.

I stretched in my bed the next morning, proceeding to a place where I knew I was going to get more answers than what I was being supplied at the moment.

A lot of people would have tried their best to begin the revenge from the minute they set foot into this place but I was not that kind of a person, instead I allowed bygones to be bygones.

I was going to find out the truth but firstly I needed to understand the pack dynamics.

I didn't know how long I have been dead for but I was pretty much sure that a lot of things would have changed in the course of my absence

I headed towards my favorite spot.

The drawing room. It reminded me of my mother so much because she loved the piano with every fiber of being in her and whenever she had a chance to play, she did it with all her might.

Some people found it funny that I was so interested in something that possibly killed my mother but, how else would I get connected to a person that I missed sorely if I didn't step into her shoes and try to figure out what she had been going through.

My father was once a kind man and I didn't understand the switch. It was crazy, and anytime I tried to fathom it, I ended up coming up with nothing.

There were many things that I didn't understand but one thing took the cut and it was the fact that there was never going to be anybody coming my way to help me out of this.

The remaining people who have gone ahead of me always believed telling my father was the best thing to happen to my mother without understanding that she was in a marriage that didn't serve her so well.

Cassandra also didn't help matters immediately when she stepped into my father's life. She made sure that he was miserable all the time but he could get it and I wanted to change that.

I peeped downstairs and saw Asher speaking to some people. He grabbed one person and flung them across the room.

A loud crack echoed throughout the entire space, and my mouth fell wide open

I had never encountered such in my entire life and I was not even hoping to understand how he went from being nice to being destructive to my people!

I felt every sense of burden at the way the people stared helplessly as he made their lives miserable

Couldn't anyone even stand up for the next person and make sure that this man didn't go without understanding that they were also people, not things that could be thrown across the room?

What manner of being docile was this? I didn't understand it and I was not expecting them to allow it

Unless...

I watched him pointing fingers at them and the rest shrinking in fear. "Next time you challenge my orders, you are going to lose your fingers and your heads. I am not going to leave this slide anymore. Do you think getting married to that tramp is my highlight? I can do without her a thousand times yet she will come back begging!"

I needed no one to explain that he was talking about my step sister but even at that I didn't believe that he had any rights to speak about her in such a manner.

"You cannot just come here and intimidate us because we do not have anyone to fight for us!" We have our lives to live and nobody has stopped you from doing whatever you like!" Only one person gathered the courage to speak which I loved so much.

If they allowed him to continue this way, he was going to turn them into slaves.

I hid behind the balcony watching to see what his next action would be and I wasn't disappointed by it.

Asher took steps forward, pointing directly in the man's face. "It would interest you that I do not care about you or your opinions. They have never mattered and would never matter no matter how much you try."  He responded rudely.

I knew that he was not to be messed with but not this way.

No matter how angry I was at them betraying me, there was still a sense of duty and felt towards them.

I stamped my feet on the ground again hoping to catch his attention but this time he didn't respond to me, instead he kept on looking at the people who had offended him.

I wanted to take revenge, but at what cost? The fact that I would have to sit here and watch another person being maltreated didn't go down well with me and no matter how much I tried to pretend like it did, I ended up failing short.

I was obligated to ensure that the people that I had called my own were completely protected from harm no matter what form it came.

Asher smacked him across the face, which made me recoil where I sat.

I never expected such behavior from him but I guess we learned about people daily, I didn't think that he was a disaster. In that moment, my initial affection for him flew away and all I could think about was deliverance.

So many people had lost their lives due to tyranny but this man here was about to continue the cycle which I wouldn't allow to take effect.

There were many things that I wasn't, and that was confrontational and problematic.

If he continued this way he was going to have a problem with me and I wouldn't mind sticking my neck out for them.

"What's going on down there?" I boldly asked because hiding was not even doing me any good.

It instead made it very impossible for me to breathe.

It made me start thinking of the impossible and searching for a better way to utilize my time.

"Can I speak with you, Alpha Asher?" I called louder.
