Capturing Two Murderers
Capturing Two Murderers
I spent most of the day in the throne room, receiving reports from my councilmen as they came and went. When night finally descended, I retired to my chambers, weary but far from at ease. The moon hung high, casting an eerie glow over the palace. Its light barely penetrated the heavy silence that had fallen in the wake of recent events. The bustling life of the court had been replaced by an unsettling stillness. Despite my exhaustion, my mind raced with thoughts of the conspiracy and the safety of my children. In a remote part of the castle, hidden by shadows, Cecelia and her husband, Matthew, moved through the corridors like wraiths. They had chosen this hour carefully, banking on the darkness and quiet to mask their treachery.
"Are you sure this is the right time?"
Matthew whispered, his voice barely above a breath. Cecelia’s eyes gleamed with cold resolve.
“It has to be now. With everyone rattled by the assassination attempt, no one will suspect another attack so soon. We strike tonight and take control before dawn.”
Clad in a dark cloak that swallowed her in the shadows, Cecelia led the way. Matthew followed, his grip tightening around the small, glinting dagger he carried. They neared my chambers, and they halted, listening. The guards posted outside were alert. They did not anticipate danger from within the palace walls. Cecelia and Matthew had timed their approach perfectly, knowing the guards would soon switch shifts, leaving a narrow window of opportunity. When that moment came, they struck. Matthew knocked one guard unconscious with a swift blow to the head, while Cecelia silenced the other with a deadly strike. Together, they pushed open the door to my chambers, intent on murder. I was not asleep. Rest had been elusive, my instincts honed by recent threats. I had heard the soft sounds outside my door and was ready when Cecelia and Matthew entered.
“Cecelia!”
I exclaimed, anger and disbelief coloring my voice.
“What is the meaning of this?”
Cecelia’s lips curled into a mocking smile.
“It is simple, dear. Your reign ends tonight. The kingdom needs strong leadership, and Matthew and I will provide it.”
Matthew lunged at me with the dagger, but I was faster than they expected. I grabbed the heavy candlestick from my bedside table and swung it hard, knocking the weapon from his hand. The commotion alerted the guards outside, who burst into the room just in time to overpower the traitors.
“Secure them!”
I commanded, my voice steady despite the terror that had gripped me moments before.
“Do not let them escape.”
The guards quickly restrained Cecelia and Matthew, pinning them to the ground as Johnson and the General arrived, drawn by the noise.
“Your Majesty, are you hurt?”
Johnson asked, his face etched with concern.
“I am unharmed,” I replied, though my heart still thundered in my chest. “Thanks to your swift response.”
I turned to Cecelia, her eyes burning with hatred even as she struggled against her captors.
“Why, Cecelia? Why betray Alexander?”
“Alexander betrayed me first.”
She spit on the floor.
“You are weak, Adeline. The kingdom needs strength, not your pitiful sentimentality. Alexander’s death was the perfect chance to take what was rightfully mine.”
I stiffened, my voice cold.
“You will answer for your crimes, both of you.” With a nod to the guards, I said, “Take them to the dungeons. Their punishment will be decided in the morning.”
Cecelia and Matthew were dragged away. I felt a small sense of relief. This immediate threat was gone, but the larger battle for the future of the kingdom had only just begun. The next morning, as the sun began to rise, I dressed in a black gown and made my way to the throne room. News of Cecelia and Matthew’s arrest had surely spread throughout the castle by now, and I wondered what Nathan’s reaction would be. The grand hall was filled with courtiers, nobles, and guards, all waiting in silence for the sentencing. Cecelia and Matthew stood bound at the foot of the dais, their expressions flickering between defiance and fear. Beside me stood Johnson, the General, and the other members of my royal council.
The herald stepped forward and announced, “Cecelia and Matthew, you stand accused of high treason, conspiracy to overthrow the crown, and attempted assassination of Her Majesty, Queen Adeline. Do you have anything to say in your defense before the sentence is passed?”
Cecelia lifted her chin, her eyes blazing with contempt.
“I only regret that I failed. This kingdom needs a ruler with vision and strength, not one lost to grief and sentiment.”
Gasps echoed through the room, but I raised my hand to silence the crowd. I spoke, my voice ice-cold.
“Cecelia, your ambition has clouded your judgment. You have betrayed your family, your queen, and your people. For your actions, you will face justice.”
I turned to Matthew, who stood pale and silent.
“You, Matthew, aided this treachery. Your guilt is clear.”
I rose from the throne, towering over them.
“The sentence for high treason is death. However, as your queen, I will determine the manner and timing of your execution. Until then, you will rot in the dungeons, a warning to all who conspire against the crown.”
Cecelia’s resolve faltered for the first time, fear flashing in her eyes.
“You cannot do this, Adeline. You are making a mistake.”
I glared down at her.
“The mistake was yours, Cecelia. Guards, take them away.”
They were dragged from the hall. Cecelia’s voice rang out, desperate and venomous.
“This is not over, Adeline! You will regret this!”
The doors closed behind them. I turned to my council.
“We must root out every conspirator, every threat. I want no stone left unturned.”
Johnson stepped forward.
“We will see to it, Your Majesty. The kingdom will be secure.”
The council dispersed. I made my way to a side chamber where my children waited. Charlotte, her eyes wide with worry, ran to me, and even baby Christopher seemed to sense the gravity of the day. I knelt, wrapping them both in a gentle embrace.
“We are safe, my loves. We will remain so.”
Charlotte clung to me.
“I am glad you are safe, Mama.”
After sending the children off to their daily routines, I returned to the throne room, expecting it to be empty. To my surprise, Nathan was seated on the steps to the throne, his eyes hard as they locked onto mine. I cautiously approached him.
