Chapter 116: The Parade

The evening came to a cheerful end as the festivities gradually subsided. The echoes of laughter and music lingered in the air. I walked Isabella to her chambers. The urge to pull her into my arms and hold her close was overwhelming. I restrained myself, knowing that any public display of affection had to be her choice.

“Good night, Andrew.”

“Good night, Isabel.”

“My father will be returning to the castle tomorrow.”

“I look forward to his arrival.”

“I had fun tonight, Andrew.”

“So did I, Isabel.”

With a tender gesture, I took her hand and pressed a gentle kiss upon it. She gave me one last, lingering glance before disappearing into her room, the door closing softly behind her. With a sigh, I turned and made my way to my own chambers. The next morning, I woke up early. I quickly dressed and made my way to the dining hall. Isabel was already seated next to her father, her elegance radiating even in the early hours. My family gathered around the table. After breakfast, my father rose to address us, his voice commanding attention.

“Today, I will send out a decree to the outlying villages. We will officially announce your engagement.”

A murmur of excitement rippled through the room.

“Andrew, I need you to plan and host tomorrow night's parade and engagement ball.”

I bowed slightly.

“As you wish, Your Majesty.”

The castle buzzed with activity, servants bustling about while the sounds of hammers and saws echoed from the courtyard, where parade floats were being constructed. I made my way to the Great Hall, the heart of the evening's ball. There, I encountered Mr. Collins, the head steward, a meticulous man with a keen eye for detail.

“Good morning, Mr. Collins.”

“Good morning, Your Highness,” he replied, bowing slightly.

“We have much to do. Shall we start with the decorations?”

“Indeed.”

The Great Hall was already partially transformed. Garlands of fresh flowers from the royal gardens adorned the walls. Rich tapestries depicting the kingdom’s history hung proudly, and the chandeliers gleamed with polish. I walked through the hall. I envisioned the final look, pausing by the grand staircase, noting its potential as a focal point.

“Ensure there are enough flowers to frame the staircase. It should be a stunning sight when Isabel makes her entrance.”

Next, I moved to the kitchens, where the head chef oversaw the preparation of the evening’s feast. The air was filled with the tantalizing aromas of roasting meats, baking bread, and simmering sauces. Chef Pierre, a rotund man with a passion for his craft, greeted me with a broad smile.

“Your Highness, we are preparing a feast fit for a king!”

“I have no doubt, Chef Pierre. Are we on schedule?”

“Everything is progressing smoothly. We have the finest ingredients, and the dishes will be both beautiful and delicious.”

“Excellent. Make sure to prepare some of Isabel’s favorite dishes.”

“Of course, Your Highness.”

Leaving the kitchens, I headed to the courtyard, where carpenters and craftsmen labored on the parade floats. Each float represented a different aspect of the kingdom: one depicted a lush forest, another a bustling village, and yet another, the majestic castle itself.

“Master Reynolds, how are we faring here?”

“Very well, Your Highness. We are on track to finish by midday.”

“Good. The floats look magnificent, but they need to be ready for a final inspection by this afternoon.”

Satisfied with the progress, I turned my attention to the musicians rehearsing in the music room. The ensemble, consisting of strings, woodwinds, and brass, promised a rich and varied performance for the ball. Maestro Giovanni, the conductor, greeted me warmly.

“Your Highness, the musicians are eager to perform. We have prepared a selection of both classical and contemporary pieces.”

“Perfect. The music must be lively and engaging. It will set the tone for the entire evening.”

I continued to oversee every aspect of the preparations, from arranging the seating to coordinating with the castle guards for security. I paid special attention to the details that would make the evening memorable: the quality of the lighting, the flow of the parade route, and the timing of each segment of the event. By late afternoon, the preparations were nearly complete. I stepped outside to observe the parade floats lined up in the courtyard, ready for their final touches. The sun began to set, casting a warm golden light over the scene. Pride and excitement filled me, knowing that the evening would celebrate Isabel’s and my future together.

When twilight descended, I retired to my chambers, quickly succumbing to sleep. The first light of dawn broke through my heavy curtains, stirring me from slumber. I stretched and rose from the bed. Today marked the parade and the engagement ball, a day that would forever signify my commitment to Isabel. I called for my valet, Thomas, who promptly entered with a tray featuring a light breakfast: fresh fruit, warm bread, and a pot of steaming tea.

“Good morning, Your Highness,” Thomas greeted, setting the tray on a small table by the window.

“Good morning, Thomas,” I replied, taking a seat. "Today is a big day. I need to look my best.”

“Indeed, Your Highness. I have prepared your attire for the parade.”

After finishing my breakfast, I moved to the dressing area where my ceremonial outfit awaited. The ensemble was a masterpiece of tailoring. A deep blue velvet coat adorned with intricate silver embroidery, symbolizing the royal family’s legacy. A crisp white shirt with a high collar and lace cuffs complemented the coat. My trousers, made of the finest black silk, gleamed alongside my polished leather boots. Thomas assisted me meticulously, ensuring every detail was perfect. The coat fit snugly, the buttons fastened precisely, and the cuffs adjusted just right. A silver brooch, bearing the family crest, was pinned to my chest, and a ceremonial sword hung at my side, its hilt encrusted with precious gems. I stood before the mirror, adjusting my cuffs one last time. I looked every bit the regal prince, ready to lead the day’s festivities.

“Thank you, Thomas.”

I made my way to the courtyard, where the castle buzzed with final preparations. The parade route was lined with banners and flags fluttering in the gentle breeze. Villagers from the surrounding areas had gathered, their faces filled with anticipation and excitement. The parade was a grand spectacle. Elaborate floats, each more magnificent than the last, rolled through the streets. One float depicted a lush forest, complete with lifelike trees and animals, while another showcased a vibrant village scene with actors portraying the daily life of the kingdom’s subjects. The final float was a majestic replica of the castle, its towers,

and battlements crafted with incredible detail.

I rode at the head of the parade on a magnificent white stallion, the royal standard fluttering behind me. The crowd cheered as I passed, waving flags and tossing flower petals into the air. I smiled and waved back, my heart swelling with pride and joy. The parade wound its way through the main square. My eyes searched for Isabel. When I finally spotted her, my breath caught in my throat. She was a vision of beauty and grace, standing on the castle balcony, overlooking the festivities.

Isabel wore a stunning gown of soft lavender, the color enhancing her natural beauty. The dress, crafted from the finest silk, flowed elegantly to the ground, adorned with delicate silver embroidery that shimmered in the sunlight, echoing the intricate patterns on my coat. Her hair, styled in loose waves, cascaded down her back, and a delicate tiara rested atop her head, adding a touch of regal elegance. Our eyes met, and a warm smile spread across her face as she gave me a small, graceful wave.  I tipped my hat to her, acknowledging her presence. The parade continued, culminating in the grand courtyard where the evening’s ball awaited. The sun began to set. I dismounted and made my way to Isabel’s side, taking her hand.

“Isabel, you look radiant.”

“Thank you, Andrew. You look quite dashing yourself.”

Suddenly, I felt a firm, reassuring hand on my shoulder. I turned to see my father standing beside me. The king was dressed in his ceremonial attire, a grand cloak of rich maroon with gold embroidery, and a crown that shimmered in the evening light.

“Well done, my son. The parade was magnificent. You have  outdone yourself.”

“Thank you, Father. I am glad everything went smoothly.”

My father turned to Isabel, his eyes softening as he addressed her.

“Isabel, you look stunning this evening. The people are fortunate to have such a graceful and kind future queen.”

Isabel curtsied gracefully, a blush spreading across her cheeks.

“Thank you, Your Majesty. It is an honor to join your family.”

Father nodded, then gestured toward the grand entrance of the ballroom.

“Shall we proceed to the ball? The evening’s festivities are just beginning.”

I offered my arm to Isabel. Together, we followed my father through the ornate doors of the ballroom. The guests inside turned to welcome us with applause and cheers. The ballroom was a sight to behold, with its high ceilings, glittering chandeliers, and walls adorned with rich tapestries. Tables were set with fine linens and adorned with centerpieces of fresh flowers. My mother stood at the entrance, greeting guests. She wore a stunning gown of deep blue, the color of the night sky, embellished with silver stars. Her eyes lit up as she saw Isabel and I  enter with Father.

“Welcome,” mother said, embracing Isabel and me. “You both look wonderful. This will be a night to remember.”
