Chapter 104: Using the Opponent's Strategy Against Them
Lorenzo's eyelashes drooped slightly, showing a hint of disappointment.
As he pondered, Daphne threw out another question, "Why'd you ask that?"
Lorenzo quickly adjusted his emotions upon hearing her, "Oh, I was just curious."
Lewis was in the cramped bathroom, leaning against the wall, listening to their conversation clearly.
He had thought Daphne trusted Lorenzo deeply, but it seemed that wasn't the case. At that moment, his hand accidentally brushed against the faucet, and the sound of running water echoed from the bathroom.
Daphne's heart sank. She glanced at the bathroom out of the corner of her eye and quickly looked away, worring Lorenzo might notice.
Her hand, resting on her thigh, clenched slightly. What was Lewis doing in the bathroom?
"I think I heard something from the bathroom," Lorenzo said, breaking the silence.
Daphne's eyes flashed with panic, but she quickly came up with an excuse.
Lorenzo pretended to be fooled by Daphne, "Oh, alright then."
He picked up a disposable cup from the table, swirled the water inside thoughtfully, and asked, "Daphne, do you love Lewis?"
The question hit Daphne like a bolt of lightning, leaving her mind in chaos.
"I..."
Lewis, inside the bathroom, tensed up instantly, his heart racing.
But Daphne seemed to make up her mind and said, "I don't love him."
Lorenzo smiled slightly, "I thought you loved him deeply. Seems I was mistaken."
Daphne sat on the couch, gripping her cup tightly, her fingertips turning white from the pressure.
Seeing that Daphne hadn't touched the chicken soup, Lorenzo opened the thermos container and said gently, "Daphne, if you don't drink the chicken soup soon, it'll get cold. It's a gesture of my care; you should at least have some."
Daphne pressed her lips together, glanced at the chicken soup in front of her, and reluctantly picked it up to take a sip.
Lorenzo's eyes curved into a smile, "How does the chicken soup taste? Do you like it? If you do, I can bring it to you every day."
"No need, that's too much trouble," Daphne declined, then covered the thermos container.
Lewis, still in the bathroom, looked grim, clutching a crumpled tissue.
As time ticked by, Lorenzo glanced at the clock on the wall, "It's getting late. I'll head out now. Take care."
Daphne responded with a nod.
As soon as Lorenzo left, Lewis stormed out of the bathroom, radiating anger, and glared at Daphne, "Daphne! You're playing both sides, How dare you?"
Daphne, baffled by Lewis's accusation, responded coldly, "What do you mean by playing both sides? I've clearly rejected you, yet you keep pestering me. How is that my fault?"
"I'm pestering you because you let me! Is it so hard to choose one person?"
Daphne looked at the furious Lewis, feeling it was pointless to argue, and remained silent on the couch.
Seeing Daphne's refusal to speak, Lewis's anger surged, and he kicked the door forcefully before storming out.
Seeing the empty room, Daphne felt a sense of desolation, then lay on the couch, staring blankly.
Unknowingly, she fell asleep.
When she woke up, daylight had already filled the room. Perhaps because she slept on the couch, she didn't sleep well.
Daphne checked the time.
Seeing it was almost time for work, she dragged her tired body to the bathroom to freshen up before heading to the office.
As soon as Daphne arrived at her desk, a colleague said, "Mr. Anderson wants to see you."
"Alright, I got it."
Daphne took the elevator to the top floor.
She arrived at Lewis's office door, took a deep breath, and knocked.
"Come in."
Daphne gently pushed the door open and approached Lewis, "Mr. Anderson, what do you need?"
Lewis typed on his keyboard for a moment, then looked up at her, "You can put aside the nursing home project. I need you to connect with a returning overseas tech expert. I hope you can persuade him to join our company."
Though Daphne didn't understand why Lewis suddenly reassigned her, she knew she had to comply as an employee.
"Understood."
Lewis handed her the background information on the tech expert, "Here's his profile. Study it well."
Daphne took the documents and skimmed through them.
The tech expert was a graduate of a prestigious overseas university with an impressive work history. If he joined the company, he would be a valuable asset.
"Alright, Mr. Anderson, I'll do my best to bring Mr. Ford into our company." she replied.
"Good, get to work."
They reverted to their professional roles.
Daphne felt this was the appropriate way to interact.
She went to the reception area to meet the tech expert, greeting him with a professional smile, "Mr. Ford, hello. I'm glad you're interested in our company."
The man, dressed in a sharp suit and gold-rimmed glasses, exuded a refined and elegant aura.
"Hello, I'm Ronnie Ford." he greeted.
They sat face-to-face and quickly got down to business.
Using her technical knowledge, Daphne successfully persuaded Ronnie to join their company.
Unbeknownst to them, their conversation was overheard by a female employee at the door.
The female employee's eyes darted around, a plan forming in her mind, "Daphne! Don't blame me!"
She headed straight to Lewis's office.
Meanwhile, Daphne was showing Ronnie around the company before heading to Lewis's office to report.
Meanwhie, the female employee had already reached Lewis's office.
Lewis glanced at her, frowning, "What is it?"
The female employee smiled obsequiously, "Mr. Anderson, you wanted Ronnie to join our company, right? I've successfully brought him in."
Lewis gave her a deep look, making her feel slightly embarrassed, and she lowered her head.
Daphne arrived at Lewis's office door just in time to overhear their conversation.
