Chapter 36: The Truth Spills
Isabella's POV
After Damián finishes reading the files about Ghost, after he's absorbed the full extent of his second-in-command's betrayal, he turns to Isabella with an expression that's eerily calm.
"You're not Sofia," he says.
Isabella's breath catches. She wasn't expecting this. Wasn't prepared for him to say it so directly. So matter-of-factly.
"How long have you known?" she asks quietly.
Damián walks to the couch and sits down slowly like his body won't support him anymore.
"Since the café," he says. "Maybe before. You move wrong. You fight wrong. You think wrong." He looks at her. "Sofia was gentle. She moved like she was apologizing for existing. You move like someone trained to fight. Someone who assesses threats instead of avoiding them."
Isabella sits across from him, her entire body trembling.
"Why didn't you say anything?" she asks.
"Because knowing meant losing the one good thing in my life," Damián says simply. His voice is hollow. "Because I was so relieved to have her back after those three weeks that I didn't want to examine too closely whether she was actually her. Because I needed to believe that someone could love me enough to come back. That someone could choose me."
He leans forward, elbows on his knees.
"So now you tell me," Damián says. His dark eyes lock onto hers. "Who are you? And why are you really here?"
Isabella takes a breath. This is it. This is the moment where she either lies one more time or tells him everything. She chooses truth.
"My name is Isabella Moreno," she says. "Sofia was my twin sister. We were identical. We looked the same but we were completely different people."
Damián closes his eyes like he's bracing himself for impact.
"Sofia died three weeks ago," Isabella continues. "Three bullets to the chest. Someone dumped her body in the River Rojo like she was garbage. The police called it gang violence and closed the case. But I knew better. I'm DEA. I work as an intelligence analyst. I study cartel patterns. And I recognized a professional hit when I saw one."
She takes another breath.
"I investigated Sofia's phone," Isabella says. "Found evidence that she was involved with you. Found photos. Found encrypted messages. And I put the pieces together. Sofia disappeared for three weeks before her death. You were searching for her frantically. And I thought... I thought you'd killed her. Thought you'd murdered her because she tried to leave. Thought you were a monster."
Damián opens his eyes and looks at her with an expression she can't read.
"So I made a plan," Isabella continues. "I would become Sofia. I would use her face and her life to infiltrate your world. I would gather evidence against you. I would prove you murdered her. And I would destroy you."
The words hang in the air between them like poison.
"I studied Sofia's life obsessively," Isabella says. "I learned how she moved. How she talked. How she held herself. And three days after her funeral, I started being her. I went to the café where you found her. I let you find me. And I began the investigation."
Damián stands and walks to the window.
"But then something happened," Isabella continues. "I started understanding Sofia's feelings for you. Started seeing the love in those encrypted messages. Started realizing that she didn't feel trapped. She felt alive. She felt chosen."
Damián's shoulders are rigid.
"And I fell for you," Isabella says. "Completely and irrevocably. I fell for the man who searched for Sofia like she was the only thing that mattered. I fell for the man who loved so deeply that he was willing to risk everything. I fell for you not despite the lies but because of them. Because the lies forced me to see who you actually are."
Damián turns to face her.
"So I investigated," Isabella continues. "I searched your office. I found Ghost's communications with Victoria Lucci. I found proof that Ghost killed Sofia. And in finding that proof, I discovered that you didn't kill her. That you loved her. That everything I came here to prove was wrong."
Her voice breaks.
"But by then I was already complicit," Isabella says. "I was already part of your world. I was already lying to you every single day. And I didn't know how to confess without destroying everything. So I kept lying. Kept pretending. Kept playing Sofia while falling more and more in love with you."
Damián sits back down. He doesn't speak. Just waits for her to continue.
"Ghost figured it out," Isabella says. "He knew I wasn't Sofia. He threatened to expose me. He offered me an escape in exchange for keeping you distracted while he moved against you. And I made a deal with him because I was terrified. Terrified that you'd kill me if you knew the truth. Terrified that I'd lose you."
She stands and walks toward him.
"But I couldn't live with it," Isabella says. "I couldn't keep the secret anymore. So this morning I decided to tell you everything. I went to your office to show you Ghost's files. I was going to confess completely. And then you appeared in the doorway."
Damián looks at her with eyes that are full of pain and rage and something else. Something that might be love or might be hate.
"You're federal," he says. "You came here as a spy. You were investigating me. You gathered evidence. You lied about your entire identity."
"Yes," Isabella says. She doesn't try to defend herself. Doesn't make excuses.
"You could destroy me," Damián continues. "You have evidence of Ghost's betrayal. You have files. You have proof of crimes. You could hand all of this to your DEA handlers and watch my organization collapse."
"I could," Isabella agrees.
"But you won't," Damián says. It's not a question.
"No," Isabella says. "I won't."
Damián stands and walks directly to her. He grabs her face with both hands and forces her to look at him.
"If you're lying to me again," he says, his voice dropping into something that sounds like death, "if there's one more deception, one more lie, one more secret you're keeping, I will kill you myself. Do you understand?"
"Yes," Isabella whispers.
"Say it," Damián commands. "Say that you understand that if you betray me again, you die."
"If I betray you again, I die," Isabella says. The words feel like a vow. Like a binding contract written in blood.
Damián pulls her close. He doesn't kiss her. He just holds her against his chest while his entire body shakes.
"I should kill you right now," he says into her hair. "I should execute you for everything you've done. For the lies. For the deception. For being federal."
"I know," Isabella says.
"But I can't," Damián continues. His voice cracks. "Because I love you. The real you. Not Sofia. Not the woman you were pretending to be. I love Isabella Moreno. The DEA agent. The twin sister seeking justice. The woman who fell for me despite every reason not to."
He pulls back and looks at her.
"So here's what happens now," Damián says. "You tell me everything. Every detail about your investigation. Every contact with the DEA. Every piece of evidence you have. You give me complete transparency."
"Okay," Isabella says.
"And then you stay with me," Damián continues. "You become someone new. Not Sofia. Not a federal agent. Someone who exists only in my world. Someone who's completely mine."
"Okay," Isabella says again.
"And if you ever lie to me again," Damián says, "if you ever hold back information or protect someone else or put anything before your loyalty to me, I will kill you and everyone you love."
Isabella understands he means it completely.
"I understand," she says.
Damián kisses her then. It's not gentle. It's not tender. It's punishing and claiming and desperate all at once. It tastes like betrayal and love and the impossible choice between justice and mercy.
When they break apart, Damián rests his forehead against hers.
"Ghost is about to arrive at the containment room," he says. "We're going to handle his betrayal. And then we're going to figure out what happens next. Together."
