Chapter 32: WHEN FIRE MEETS NIGHT
The plateau split beneath their feet.
Shadows bled from the cracks like ink flooding water, twisting upward in long tendrils that coiled around Voren’s limbs. His body lifted from the ground as if the darkness itself had chosen to crown him. The air pulsed with wrongness cold pressure that gnawed at the edges of Elysia’s flame.
Elysia planted her feet, fire rippling along her skin in molten waves.
“You can summon all the shadows you want,” she said, eyes burning gold. “I won’t break.”
Voren hovered above the cracked stone, expression unreadable.
“My dear child… you misunderstand.”
The shadows behind him spread into wings vast, silent, and hungry.
“I’m not here to break you. I’m here to claim you.”
The shadows surged forward.
And fire answered.
Elysia thrust her hands outward, unleashing a sweeping arc of flame that illuminated the entire mountaintop. It struck the shadow wings with a roar. For a heartbeat, fire and night collided in midair, neither giving way.
Then the shadows split opening around the fire as though swallowing it whole.
Elysia’s breath hitched.
Kael’s voice cut through the chaos from behind the shadow barrier:
“Lyn! Don’t match his power direct it!”
“I’m trying!” she shouted back.
But Voren moved faster than thought.
He swept his hand, and the shadows thickened, curling around her wrists, dragging downward like tar. Elysia burned hotter, pushing back with raw flame enough to ignite the air itself yet the shadows only recoiled, then returned, adapting.
He was learning her.
Every move.
Every weakness.
Her pulse pounded painfully. She had to think not just fight.
Flames surged beneath her feet and she vaulted upward, flipping over the choking wave of darkness. She landed in a crouch, fire spiraling around her like a living serpent.
Voren eyed the flames with mild interest.
“Exquisite. Seraphine taught you control.”
“She taught me strength,” Elysia said. “And how to burn monsters like you.”
Voren smiled.
“Let me show you what your mother’s strength failed to do.”
He snapped his fingers.
The mountain went silent.
The wind froze.
The shadows behind him stretched and rose, shaping themselves into figures tall, armored, faceless. Shade Knights. Their presence drained the warmth from the air.
One.
Two.
Five.
Seven.
A circle of darkness encasing her.
Thorn’s distant voice boomed, “WE NEED TO GET TO HER NOW!”
But the barrier around them didn’t budge. It rippled like a trapped storm, violently flinging back anyone who tried to breach it.
Aria screamed in frustration, runes lighting her hands.
“Lyn! Hold on”
The shadows silenced everything again.
It was just Elysia.
Alone.
Facing the man who had destroyed her childhood.
A Shade Knight lunged first blade of shadow arcing toward her throat. Elysia ducked beneath it, fire bursting from her heel as she pivoted, kicking the creature in the chest. The impact sent it spiraling backward, hissing.
Another swung from behind silent, deadly.
Elysia spun, igniting her arms, forming twin crescents of fire. She sliced the Knight cleanly in half, the flames erasing its form in a burst of gold.
But for every one she destroyed, two more formed.
Endless.
Voren watched, bored.
“You fight with passion,” he said. “But passion burns out quickly.”
“Good thing mine doesn’t,” she spat.
She inhaled sharply and the Ember Crown ignited inside her, flooding her limbs with heat so intense it blurred her vision. Tattoos of flame spiraled across her arms and throat, glowing brighter with every heartbeat.
Elysia sweeps both arms outward
FWOOM
A dome of white-hot fire blasted from her, incinerating every Shade Knight in an instant. For a moment, the plateau was a sun.
Voren shielded his face with a cloak of shadows, though his voice remained calm.
“There. That is the power I require.”
“You’ll never have it.”
“It isn’t yours to refuse,” he murmured. “The Crown always returns to its true master.”
Elysia’s rage spiked.
“My mother was the true master. I am her heir.”
“Your mother was a candle next to the inferno you could become,” he said. “But you you are incomplete.”
His eyes gleamed with wicked hunger.
“The Crown inside you is fractured. It needs the other half.”
The words hit her like ice.
Kael.
Her heart clenched painfully. Voren saw it he relished it.
“Oh, child,” he whispered, “I see the fear in you now. The boy is not here by accident.”
Elysia’s fire wavered.
“What do you mean?”
“Kael is the second half,” Voren said.
“The last fragment of the Ember Queen’s heart lies inside him.”
Her breath stopped.
“You’re lying.”
Voren smiled softly.
“Am I? Look at him.”
He snapped his fingers.
The shadow barrier thinned for a moment just long enough for her to see Kael drop to one knee, gasping. Light soft, golden flickered beneath his ribs. Illuminating his veins.
Not flame.
But the glow of pure ember.
Her knees threatened to buckle.
“No…” she whispered. “No, that’s not possible.”
“Your mother, in her last act, divided the Crown,” Voren said. “Half into you half into the boy who was fated to kill you.”
Elysia’s mind spun.
Kael looked up, meeting her eyes through the flickering barrier.
“Lyn,” he rasped, “don’t listen ”
The barrier thickened, silencing him again.
Voren descended until his feet touched the stone, darkness swirling around him like a storm.
“You cannot win without him,” he said. “And you cannot survive if he keeps what belongs to you. The Crown was meant to be whole. Meant to be one.”
“And you intend to take it.”
“Of course.” He tilted his head. “But the beauty is you don’t have to die for me to claim it.”
The shadows around him expanded.
“Just bow.”
Elysia’s flames trembled not because she feared him.
But because she feared the truth.
Kael had the other half.
Kael was the key.
Kael was part of her Crown… part of her.
And Voren wanted to tear it out.
She inhaled shakily.
Then she lifted her chin.
“You want my crown?”
Her flames rose higher.
“Come take it.”
Voren’s eyes sharpened.
“So be it.”
He hurled both hands forward and the shadows lunged, a tidal wave of night swallowing the entire plateau.
Elysia threw her arms wide, flames erup
ting in a blinding column of gold that pierced the sky.
Night and fire collided.
The mountain shook.
The world cracked.
And somewhere in the chaos
The Crown inside her whispered:
Choose.
