Chapter 28: Trust Rebuilt
Agent Sarah Kim's POV
The emergency warning on my phone made my hands shake. Elena's text was only three words, but they told me everything I needed to know: "Ryan in danger."
I was meant to be in Montana by now, working my new cyber crimes assignment far away from trafficking cases. Instead, I was driving through the night toward Moonfall Bay, breaking direct orders from my bosses.
But Elena needed help, and some things meant more than following rules.
"Agent Kim," my phone rang as I reached the town limits. It was Elena, and she sounded scared.
"Sarah, thank God. Are you really coming back?"
"I'm already here. Where are you?"
"Racing to Ryan's clinic. Marcus sent me a message saying Ryan and Amy are in trouble. I'm still twenty minutes away."
"I'm five minutes from the clinic. Elena, what if this is another trap?"
"Then we'll face it together."
I hung up and pressed harder on the gas pedal. For three months, I'd been pushing papers in Montana, analyzing computer crimes that felt meaningless after chasing real monsters. My supervisor said the move was for my own safety, but it felt like punishment.
Tonight, I was remembering why I became an FBI agent in the first place.
Ryan's clinic was dark except for one light in the back room. I parked across the street and called for help, but the closest agents were forty minutes away.
"Sarah." Elena's voice made me jump. She'd appeared beside my car like a ghost.
"Elena, you scared me to death. I thought you were twenty minutes away."
"I drove faster than I've ever driven in my life." Her gun was already in her hand. "Have you seen any movement inside?"
"Nothing. But that doesn't mean it's safe."
We approached the clinic carefully, using openings and cars for cover. Elena moved like a trained police officer, and I remembered that she'd been doing this longer than I had.
"Elena, before we go in there, I need to tell you something."
"What?"
"Marcus was right about Agent Williams. Internal Affairs found proof that he was taking money from Chen's network."
Elena stopped walking. "What about you? Marcus said you weren't who you claimed to be."
"Marcus was half right. My real name is Sarah Kim, and I really am FBI. But I'm also the daughter of a kidnapping victim."
Elena stared at me in the darkness. "What?"
"My mother was brought to America illegally when she was seventeen. She fled from traffickers and built a new life, but she never forgot what happened to her. When I became an agent, I focused in trafficking cases because of her story."
"Why didn't you tell me before?"
"Because personal ties can cloud judgment. But Elena, hunting these monsters isn't just my job – it's personal."
We reached the clinic's back door, which was standing open. That was definitely not normal.
"Elena, Ryan would never leave this door unlocked." "Unless someone forced him to."
We went inside slowly, our guns ready. The clinic felt wrong – too quiet, too empty, like something terrible had already happened.
"Ryan?" Elena called softly. "Amy?"
No answer.
We checked every room, every closet, every place someone could hide. The clinic was totally empty, but signs of struggle were everywhere. Overturned chairs, scattered medical supplies, and worst of all – drops of blood on the floor.
"Sarah, look at this." Elena was studying Ryan's desk, where a note was pinned under a paperweight.
The message was in Marcus's handwriting: "Elena, your friends are safe for now. But I have a business offer for you. Meet me at the old lighthouse at midnight if you want to see them again. Come alone, or they die. - M.D."
I checked my watch. It was already eleven-thirty.
"Elena, this is obviously a trap."
"Of course it's a trick. But Sarah, what choice do I have? If I don't go, Marcus will kill Ryan and Amy."
"If you do go, he'll kill all three of you."
Elena was quiet for a moment, looking at the note. "Sarah, what if we don't play by Marcus's rules this time?"
"What do you mean?"
"He expects me to come alone and scared. What if I come prepared and angry instead?"
We spent twenty minutes planning our method. Elena would go to the lighthouse as asked, but I would position myself with a sniper rifle in the woods nearby. If Marcus tried to hurt anyone, I'd stop him forever.
"Sarah, are you sure about this? If something goes wrong, both our jobs are over."
"Our careers don't matter if good people die."
The old lighthouse stood on a rocky cliff overlooking the bay. It had been abandoned for years, which made it perfect for secret meetings and terrible for rescue efforts.
I climbed into position among the trees, my rifle trained on the lighthouse door. Through my scope, I could see Elena approaching the building right on time.
"Marcus!" she called. "I'm here! Where are Ryan and Amy?"
The lighthouse door opened, and Marcus stepped out with a gun in his hand. But he wasn't alone.
Behind him came two guys I didn't recognize, followed by Ryan and Amy with their hands tied behind their backs.
"Elena!" Amy's voice carried across the water. "It's a trick! Marcus is working with Chen now!"
My blood went cold. If Marcus was working with Chen instead of running from him, everything we thought we knew was wrong.
"Elena," Marcus called, "drop your weapon and walk toward me slowly."
"Let Ryan and Amy go first."
"I don't think so. You see, Elena, Chen offered me a relationship instead of a death sentence. I bring him your network of FBI friends, and he makes me the head of Pacific Coast operations."
Through my scope, I could see Elena thinking fast. She was outnumbered three to one, with two prisoners to worry about.
"Marcus, what makes you think I have FBI contacts?"
"Because Chen's guys have been watching you for months. They know about your friendship with Agent Kim, your cooperation with Agent Williams, your access to government databases."
I felt fear rising in my chest. If Chen knew about my link to Elena, my family was in even more danger than I'd thought.
"Elena," Marcus continued, "Chen wants a full list of every FBI agent who worked on trafficking cases in the past year. Give me that list, and your friends live."
"And if I refuse?"
"Then they die, and Chen's people start eliminating FBI agents one by one until someone gives us the information we need."
Elena looked straight at the woods where I was hiding. I couldn't see her face clearly, but I knew she was trying to tell me something.
"Marcus, I'll give you the list. But I need to make a phone call first."
"No phone calls."
"It's not to the FBI. It's to Agent Kim – she has access to the information I need."
My phone rang immediately. Elena was calling me, but she was also giving me a warning.
"Sarah," Elena said loudly enough for Marcus to hear, "I need you to access the federal trafficking database and send me the agent contact list."
I understood. Elena was buying time and giving me information about the situation.
"Elena, are you safe?"
"For now. Sarah, Marcus is here with two other guys. They have Ryan and Amy."
Through my scope, I watched Marcus getting antsy. "Elena, hang up the phone now."
"Sarah, I'm at the old lighthouse. Marcus is armed, and so are his friends."
That's when I saw movement behind the tower that made my heart stop.
Three black SUVs were going up the access road with their headlights off.
Chen hadn't just sent Marcus to catch Elena.
He'd sent an army.
