Chapter 46: The Attack Comes Early

POV: Aria Blackwood

The alarm bells sound at midnight.

Not the preparation alarm. Not the gathering signal. The battle alarm. The real thing.

The entire compound erupts into motion instantly.

Warriors who were sleeping are moving toward positions. Supplies are being rushed to secure locations. The calm preparation transforms into absolute chaos in the span of seconds. The Council isn't waiting. They're attacking now.

Cade appears in my chamber before I can even fully process what's happening.

"They're coming," he says. His voice is already in command mode. Already focused. Already a general instead of a protector. "The perimeter is under assault. We're losing the northern gate."

I move toward the door but Cade stops me.

"You stay here," he says. "In the center of the camp. You coordinate the blood-sense network. You see everything happening across the battlefield and you guide us. That's your role. That's how you help."

He's already moving toward the door.

"Cade, wait—" I call after him.

But he's gone. Moving toward the battle. Moving toward violence and blood and the possibility that he won't come back.

Dominic appears moments later.

He's fully armored. Armed. His expression is carved from stone. He looks at me for only a moment before he speaks.

"I'm taking my forces to protect the supply lines," he says. His voice is clipped. Military. Professional. "If the Council breaks through the northern positions, they'll try to cut off our resources. I can't let that happen."

"Dominic—" I start.

"You need to stay focused," he says. Not unkindly. Just a statement of fact. "You need to survive this. Everything depends on your survival."

Then he's gone too.

Both of them moving toward battle. Both of them fighting for me in different ways. Both of them accepting that they're about to risk their lives in a war that started because the Council wants to enslave me.

The weight of that realization is crushing.

I'm moved to the center camp by my guard.

There's a command tent set up with maps and messengers and warriors ready to relay orders. I'm placed at the center with a perimeter of the best fighters Blood Moon has. They're here to protect me while I work.

My power immediately explodes outward.

I open myself to the blood-sense completely. Suddenly I can feel every wolf on this battlefield. Every heart beating. Every moment of fear or rage or determination. The entire battle becomes a map written in blood and life force.

It's overwhelming.

I can feel Cade at the northern gate. He's fighting with brutal efficiency. His wolves are holding the line but barely. The Council forces are pushing hard. They're trying to break through and reach the center of camp where I am.

I can feel Dominic protecting the supply lines to the east. He's positioned his forces perfectly. The Council units trying to flank him are getting picked off before they can establish positions.

I can feel the independent packs fighting on the western flank. They're holding their own but they're scared. They're not used to this level of violence. They're not used to fighting for their lives.

And I can feel the Council forces.

They're everywhere. Pushing from multiple directions. Using tactics designed to overwhelm through sheer force and coordination. They're not trying to negotiate anymore. They're not trying to be strategic. They're trying to crush us through pure aggression.

"Report," I say to the nearest messenger.

"Northern perimeter is holding but barely," the messenger says, breathing hard. "The binding mages are moving toward the center. They're trying to get close enough to you to activate the chains."

Fear spikes through me.

The binding mages are the real threat. Not the regular Council warriors. The binding mages can create chains of power that will trap me completely. That will make me helpless.

"Guide Cade's forces to intercept them," I say. "I don't care if the perimeter gets breached. I need those mages stopped before they get close to camp."

The messenger nods and relays the order.

Through the blood-sense, I feel Cade process the command. Feel him change direction. Feel him moving his warriors toward the binding mages instead of holding the gate.

It's the right move strategically. But it means the northern perimeter is about to fall.

It means the Council is about to break through.

"Southern perimeter is under heavy assault," another messenger reports. "They're pushing through our defenses. We're losing ground."

My power surges in response.

I reach out with my blood-sense and touch the warriors attacking the southern perimeter. I don't kill them. Just distract them. Make their blood burn just enough to slow them down. Give our warriors time to regroup and counter.

It works for maybe two minutes.

Then the Council adapts. They stop attacking and instead focus everything on getting their binding mages through the chaos and toward the center.

Toward me.

"How long until they reach us?" I ask.

"Minutes," the messenger says. His voice shakes. "Five minutes, maybe ten."

Dominic is moving his forces toward the southern perimeter. I can feel him redirecting warriors. Can feel him trying to shore up the defenses that are about to collapse. But he's going to be too late.

The binding mages are going to reach me.

Cade is fighting the first group of binding mages at the northern gate. I can feel the moment they activate their chains. Feel the power explode as ancient magic tries to bind him. But Cade is fast. He's vicious. He breaks through their formation before they can fully activate the binding network.

But more binding mages are coming.

The Council sent multiple teams. Multiple backup plans. They're not taking any chances.

"Get ready to move," I tell my guard. "When they get close, we relocate. We don't stay in one position long enough for the binding network to activate."

My guards nod but they know it's just delaying the inevitable. The binding mages are coordinating now. They're working together. They're creating overlapping chains that will eventually trap me no matter where I run.

The first group breaches the southern perimeter.

They're moving toward the center tent with expressions of absolute focus. They have chains of light in their hands. Binding magic crackling around them. They're coming for me.

Dominic intercepts them before they get close.

I watch through the blood-sense as he tears through their formation. Watch as his warriors engage the Council forces surrounding the mages. Watch as he fights like a man possessed, driven by something deeper than strategy or duty.

Driven by the mate bond.

He knows that if those binding mages reach me, I'm enslaved. He knows what that means for both of us. So he's fighting like nothing else matters.

And for a moment, he stops them.

But it costs him.

A Council warrior gets past his guard and his blade finds Dominic's shoulder. I feel the pain spike through our bond. Feel him stagger. Feel him nearly go down.

"Dominic!" I scream without thinking.

My power explodes outward uncontrolled.

The Council warrior who wounded him drops instantly, his blood boiling from the inside. But I've also hit friendly forces in my panic. Our own warriors fall because I wasn't precise. Because I let emotion override control.

This is what I was afraid of.

This is what I've been terrified of since the beginning.

My power is too much. Too uncontrolled. Too dangerous. And when I'm afraid, when I'm desperate, when someone I care about is hurt, I lose precision.

I become a weapon instead of a person.

Dominic recovers and pushes forward again. But he's bleeding. He's hurt. And the binding mages are still coming.

Cade has finished his group and is moving south. But he's going to be too late.

The binding network is activating.

I can feel it. The ancient magic starting to weave together. Creating chains that span the entire battlefield. Creating a cage designed specifically to hold a blood sovereign.

And I understand that this is the moment.

This is the point where I either choose to be controlled by my fear or to face what's coming.

The binding mages reach the edge of the center camp.

"NOW!" I scream at my guards.

They form a wall between me and the mages. The first exchange of blades happens in front of me. Steel against steel. Blood against blood.

And the binding chains activate.

They're invisible but I can feel them. Feel them wrapping around my power. Feel them trying to suppress my abilities. Feel them trying to lock me down completely.

The pain is indescribable.
