Chapter 44: Aria's Doubts
POV: Aria Blackwood
The walls are empty at midnight.
Everyone else is sleeping or preparing or trying to find peace before the battle. But I can't sleep. Can't stop thinking about everything that could go wrong.
What if my power isn't enough? What if the Council's binding mages are stronger than Elder Thaddeus warned? What if I freeze in the middle of combat and people die because I hesitate?
What if I lose control completely and kill my own warriors with my power?
The doubts are louder than the darkness now. More insidious. Because they're reasonable. Because they could actually happen.
I stand on the highest wall and look out at the sacred grounds in the distance. That's where it ends. That's where everything comes down to one moment. One confrontation. One choice that determines if we win or if the Council enslaves me and destroys everything.
And I'm terrified I'm not strong enough.
"You're thinking too much," a voice says behind me.
I turn to find Cade approaching. He doesn't say anything else. Just comes and stands beside me, looking out at the same view. His scarred face is calm. His presence is solid.
He doesn't touch me. Doesn't try to comfort me with words. Just stands there letting me know I'm not alone.
After maybe an hour, Dominic appears from the other side.
He moves slowly like he's not sure if he's welcome. Like he's afraid Cade will push him away. But Cade just nods at him and shifts slightly so there's space.
"Both of us?" Dominic asks quietly. His voice is careful. Like he's asking permission.
I nod.
Cade doesn't leave. Doesn't object. Doesn't make it weird. He just accepts that Dominic belongs here too. That this moment requires both of them in a way neither of us could have predicted months ago.
We stand on the walls together.
All three of us. The man I chose myself. The man whose mate bond pulls at me. The girl caught between them who finally learned that she doesn't have to choose. That sometimes the answer is letting people just be present without needing anything in return.
Dominic speaks first.
"I've been thinking about that night at the Harvest Moon ceremony," he says. His voice is quiet in the darkness. "About what I said. About how I called you unremarkable. I want you to know that every single word was a lie. You were never unremarkable. I was just too afraid to see your power."
I don't respond. Just listen.
"I know you don't forgive me," Dominic continues. "I know that apologies don't undo what I did. But I need you to understand something. When we go into that battle tomorrow, when the Council tries to bind you, I'm going to be there. And I'm going to fight like I've never fought for anything in my life. Not because I expect anything from you. But because you deserve to survive."
Cade speaks next.
"You're going to be afraid tomorrow," he says. His voice is grounded. Real. "You're going to wonder if you're strong enough. You're going to feel the pressure of eight hundred warriors depending on you. And you're going to be tempted to let the darkness take over completely just so you don't have to feel that pressure anymore."
He turns to look at me.
"But you won't," he says with absolute certainty. "Because you've already proven you can be powerful without being a tyrant. You've already proven you can make hard choices and still stay human. So when you're in the middle of that battle and the doubts hit, remember that. Remember that you've already survived the hardest part. The rest is just showing up."
I feel tears start to form.
"What if I'm not enough?" I whisper. "What if they're right that I should be enslaved? What if my power is too dangerous to be free?"
"Then we'll be there," Dominic says. "Both of us. Every step. Every moment."
Cade nods. "You're not alone in this. You haven't been alone since you woke up with power. And you won't be alone tomorrow."
We stand on the walls through the entire night.
None of us speak much. We just exist together in the darkness. Two men who should be enemies standing beside the woman they both care about in different ways. It should be complicated. It should be tense. It should be impossible.
But it's not.
Because for once, both of them are choosing to be what she needs instead of what they want.
As dawn approaches, the compound starts waking.
Warriors begin moving toward their positions. The final preparations begin. The moment is almost here.
I step down from the walls and both Cade and Dominic follow. We move toward the war room where the final briefing will happen.
The commanders are waiting. The maps are spread out. The strategy is set. All that's left is execution.
"The binding mages are in position," a scout reports. "The Council is ready. They're waiting for us to make the first move."
"Then we move," Cade says. His command voice is absolute. "We move now. We don't give them time to think. We don't give them time to perfect those chains."
Warriors start mobilizing instantly.
The army of eight hundred assembles. Rogues and pack warriors standing together. Independent wolves fighting alongside Alphas. Everything the Council said couldn't happen is happening.
Aria moves toward the gates.
Zara intercepts her, pulling her into a quick embrace.
"Come back," Zara whispers. "Promise me you'll come back."
"I promise," Aria says. And she means it. She's not planning to sacrifice herself. She's not planning to lose. She's planning to survive. To fight. To win.
Both Cade and Dominic are waiting at the gates with horses and weapons.
The army stretches behind them. Hundreds of warriors ready. Hundreds of wolves prepared to fight for freedom.
"This is it," Cade says. It's not a question.
"This is it," Aria agrees.
They ride toward the sacred grounds.
As they move, the sun rises behind them. It's going to be a beautiful day for a war. A beautiful day to decide the fate of the entire territories.
The sacred grounds come into view.
The Council's forces are already assembled. Thousands of warriors in formation. Binding mages arranged in a precise pattern. The chains of power are visible, glowing with ancient magic designed to trap and enslave.
And in the center of it all, the binding stone. The place where blood witches were executed centuries ago.
The place where Aria's fate will be decided.
Cade raises his hand and the entire army stops.
For a moment, there's perfect silence.
Then Aria steps forward.
She stands between the two armies. Between the Council and the alliance. Between slavery and freedom.
And she transforms.
Her power explodes outward like a shockwave. Every wolf within a hundred miles feels it. Every warrior on both sides understands in that moment that they're about to witness something that will reshape the world.
The Council's binding mages start activating the chains.
And Aria screams defiance into the dawn.
The war has begun.
