Chapter 36 War Preparations
Chapter 36 War Preparations
POV: Aria Blackwood
The compound explodes into motion.
After the trial ends, after Aria makes her choice to stand alone, after she proves to the Council that she can be just and fair, Blood Moon transforms overnight. The sanctuary becomes a fortress. The gardens are torn up for training grounds. The peaceful courtyard becomes a war camp.
Weapons are being sharpened everywhere.
Aria walks through the compound and watches her people prepare. Warriors are checking blades. Strategists are planning supply lines. Healers are gathering medicine for the wounded they know are coming.
Everyone understands the truth: the trial was just a formality.
The Council never intended to let her live.
The moment she proved she could be fair, they decided she was too dangerous. A blood witch who uses power justly is more threatening than a tyrant ever could be. A sovereign who refuses to enslave people makes the entire pack hierarchy obsolete.
So the war comes.
Cade stands in the center of the war room directing everything with military precision. He's transformed from protector to general. His scarred face is completely focused. His commands are absolute. Everything Blood Moon has been building for months is about to be tested in actual combat.
"Get the northern perimeter reinforced," he says to one group of warriors. "And move the supply cache to the eastern tunnel. If they breach the compound, we need backup locations."
The warriors move instantly.
Dominic arrives with Silver Crest's forces just after dawn.
The gates open and two hundred Silver Crest warriors ride in with weapons drawn and armor polished. They're not attacking. They're integrating. They're joining Blood Moon for the coming war.
The sight stops the entire compound.
Blood Moon and Silver Crest. Traditionally enemies. Now fighting together.
Pack scouts who've been observing the preparations see this moment and they ride back to their territories spreading the word. The message is clear: the Council is about to face rebellion. A unified force of rogues and pack warriors together. Something that hasn't happened in centuries.
The territories start choosing sides.
A messenger arrives from the northern independent packs. They're joining the alliance. They're tired of Council control. They're willing to risk everything for the chance at freedom.
Another messenger brings news from the western territories. The packs there are staying neutral. They're waiting to see who wins before committing. Survival first. Loyalty second.
But by far the most shocking news comes from the southern territories.
A female Alpha sends word that she's breaking from the Council. She's bringing her entire pack to fight. She's declaring herself free from Council authority and willing to die defending that freedom.
The momentum is building.
Aria watches it happen from the war room. She sits at the strategy table with maps and reports spread in front of her. Cade on one side. Dominic on the other. Both of them giving her space while still supporting her.
Both of them respecting her choice to stand alone.
"We have at least four hundred fighters here now," Cade says, pointing to the map. "With the northern packs and the female Alpha's warriors, we could be looking at six hundred total. The Council has maybe eight hundred."
"But they're scattered," Dominic says. He's been studying Council movement for weeks. "They don't have the kind of unified command structure we have. They're used to operating independently. When the battle starts, we might actually have the advantage."
Aria looks at both of them. She's learned in the past few days how to separate the mate bond from actual choice. How to appreciate Dominic's strategic mind without confusing it with romantic feelings. How to respect Cade's leadership without needing him to complete her.
She's become a sovereign in her own right.
"We need to coordinate the arrival of the allied packs," she says. Her voice is steady. Command-level. "We need to time it so that when the Council moves in, we're already prepared. We need them to think they're attacking a sanctuary and instead find themselves surrounded."
Both men nod. They're not debating with her. They're not trying to override her. They're listening like she's their equal.
Because she is.
Over the next three days, the preparations accelerate.
Warriors train in intense drills. Healers prepare for mass casualties. Food supplies are rationed. Defensive positions are mapped out. Every wolf in the compound knows that they're about to fight for their survival.
But it's not just war preparation happening.
The northern packs begin arriving in small groups. Their warriors integrate with Blood Moon's forces. They bring their own strategies. Their own strengths. The compound fills with wolves from different territories working together like they've always been allies instead of strangers.
A scout brings news that the Council's forces are moving into position.
They're gathering at the sacred grounds—the place where blood witches were executed centuries ago. The place where Aria will eventually have to face them. The symbolism isn't subtle. The Council is reminding everyone that they have the power of history on their side.
But Aria isn't just a ghost of the past anymore.
She's the future.
On the fourth day, Zara approaches her in the courtyard.
Her best friend looks nervous. Like she's been preparing to say something difficult.
"I need to tell you something," Zara says. They find a quiet corner away from the constant activity.
"What?" Aria asks.
"I was wrong about you," Zara says. The words come out in a rush. "During the darkness phase. When I was scared of what you were becoming. I was right to be scared. But I was wrong about the conclusion. You chose not to become a monster. You chose to be better. And I want you to know that I'm proud of you."
Aria feels something warm in her chest. Genuine connection without complication. Friendship without obligation.
"Thank you," Aria says. "I needed to hear that."
They embrace and for a moment, the coming war feels very far away. For a moment, it's just two friends who survived something terrible together.
That night, Dominic finds her on the walls.
He doesn't try to touch her. Doesn't try to convince her of anything. Just stands beside her and looks out at the compound preparing for war.
"I'm glad you chose yourself," he says quietly. "I know I wanted you to choose me. But I'm glad you chose yourself first."
"It doesn't mean I forgive you," Aria says. The words are honest but not cruel.
"I know," Dominic responds. "But maybe someday you will. And if you do, I'll be grateful. And if you don't, I'll accept that too."
He leaves her there.
Cade finds her an hour later.
He brings something wrapped in cloth. When he unwraps it, it's a weapon. A blade that's both beautiful and deadly. The handle is carved from bone. The edge is sharp enough to cut through anything.
"For you," he says. "In case you need it."
"I have my power," Aria says.
"Power can fail," Cade responds. "But steel never does."
He places the weapon in her hands and she feels the weight of it. Feels the responsibility. Feels the reality of what's coming.
"Thank you," she says.
"Don't thank me yet," Cade says. "We haven't won."
He leaves her with the weapon.
Aria stands on the walls holding the blade and realizes that she's completely ready for war. Not because she's accepted the darkness. But because she's accepted all of it. The light and the dark. The choice and the consequence. The power and the responsibility.
Just after midnight, a messenger arrives from the eastern territories.
His face is pale and he's bleeding from multiple wounds.
"They're moving," he says, breathing hard. "The Council isn't waiting anymore. They're coming. They're bringing everything they have. They're coming at dawn."
Cade appears instantly. Then Dominic. Then all the war council members.
"How long?" Cade demands.
"Hours," the messenger says. "They'll be here before sunrise."
The alarm bells start ringing.
Not a practice alarm. The real thing.
Every wolf in the compound knows what it means.
The war is starting now.
Not tomorrow. Not when they're completely ready. Now. While they're still preparing. While some of the allied packs haven't fully arrived. While the strategic advantage is still theoretical instead of actual.
The Council is attacking immediately and they're attacking hard.
Aria grips the blade Cade gave her and feels the weight of command settle on her shoulders.
In a few hours, she's going to have to lead warriors into battle. She's going to have to make decisions that determine who lives and who dies. She's going to have to be every bit the sovereign the Council fears.
And she's finally ready to be exactly that.
