The Ride

Khari stepped out into the chilly morning air, a smile playing on her lips. The sun had yet to peek over the horizon, casting a low glow. She traversed a narrow path that led to the stables, biting her lip in anticipation. The cricket’s symphony was broken by the sound of her boots grazing against the dirt. As she opened the stable doors, a cloud of dust met her nose, and the horses neighed in surprise. The soldiers inside had stopped their activities, their eyes watching her every move as she cautiously walked into the space. The sound of the hooves against the stone reverberated in her ears as she walked down the aisle of the stables, and her nostrils filled with the scents of hay, leather, and animal musk. Azim finally spotted Khari at the other end, surrounded by a few stable hands working diligently around her. The light beige riding pants fit her curves perfectly and accentuated her hourglass shape even more with the addition of the matching jacket. Her long hair was tied back into an intricate braid cascading down her left shoulder while small wisps hung loosely, framing her face. Azim couldn’t help but stare, captivated by her beauty, before one of his men pushed him forward, jolting him out of his stunned daze.

He confidently approached her, a bit of nervousness evident on his face. He cleared his throat, “Miss Khari,” he said with a smile, “I’m glad you decided to join us.”

She whipped her head around to the sound of running boots, hoof beats clopping along the ground, and the faint sound of laughter echoed in the air. She shifted timidly and cleared her throat, “I don’t mean to intrude on your riding time with your platoon,” she assumed.

“Nonsense,” he said with a wave of his hand. “The men don’t mind. The thrill of the ride brings back memories of days spent carefree and far away from the dullness of palace life,” his eyes twinkled as he watched them mount their horses with excitement.

Her face lit up with amusement as she nodded and said, “That’s precisely how I’d explain it,” she said, still smiling.

He slowly extended his hand towards hers and guided her towards the far end of the stable, where his horse stood. The steed stood regally, its midnight-black coat glimmering with a striking red mane cascading down his neck. He carefully placed her hand on his horse’s neck and spoke in a low, reverent voice, “This is Phoenix. My best friend on the battlefield.”

She ran her fingers through the horse’s mane, feeling the velvet softness of its coat. Phoenix stepped closer and nickered softly, its eyes twinkling. “You seem too sweet to be a war horse,” she whispered as she patted his neck.

Azim stood before the steed, his hands gently gliding along its neck, as he spoke softly, “We had a talk before you arrived. He knows how important you are to me.” He met its gaze, and the horse seemed to nod in response. “He’s promised to be on his best behavior,” Azim added, his lips curving into a contented smile as the horse neighed in agreement.

Khari stumbled over his words in her mind, taking a minute to digest them, “I’m important to you?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Azim felt his pulse quicken as he drank in her smooth skin, long dark hair, and silver eyes. He delicately moved a lock of hair out of her face, and the warmth of her skin sent a shiver down his spine. With a serious expression, he declared, “I don’t let just anyone ride my prized horse.”

Azim’s fingertips were like fire as they moved gently along her cheek, causing her eyelids to flutter and her heart to race. She had never felt such a gentle caress before. Her entire body quivered as she felt an electric current run through her body, igniting every nerve along the way. She desperately wanted him to touch her again, but she was too overwhelmed to speak, standing there in awe.

A corner of his mouth twitched, and the sparkle of mischief danced in his eyes at her flustered state. He reached out and grasped her hand, tugging her in the direction of the forest, “Come on,” Phoenix peered out from behind Khari’s legs, the horse’s ears pricking up at the faintest noise. Guiding Khari to the saddle, he said, “When I lift you up, use your other leg to swing around and position yourself on the saddle.” He watched the confusion wash over her face, her lips twitching as she digested his instructions. Then he smiled softly, offering her a reassuring squeeze of her hand, “Just remember, step and swing.” He moved to Phoenix’s side, one hand bracing the horse’s neck while the other guided Khari’s foot into the stirrup, “Ready?” he asked.

She delivered a determined nod, “Ready,” she said as his calloused hands settled on her waist. She felt a wave of warmth rush through her body as he firmly, yet tenderly, gripped and lifted her up. Her right leg swung gracefully over Phoenix’s back, landing her directly on his saddle. She felt a thrill of accomplishment, and a huge smile spread across her face.

“Perfect,” Azim swung a leg over the horse’s strong, warm back and settled his weight against her. His arms wrapped around her, and his chiseled chest pressed firmly against her back. She could feel the heat emanating from his body and felt his breath against the nape of her neck. Every exhale sent a wave of goosebumps cascading down her spine as her heart raced faster and faster. She felt her cheeks flush with warmth as she tried to steady her breathing.

He encircled her with his strong arms, the reins dangling from one hand as he clasped her tightly against him. His breath was warm against her ear as he asked softly, “Are you comfortable?”

She nodded, not daring to move for fear of breaking the moment as her whole body tensed with desire.

“Good,” he said, giving her a gentle squeeze. He placed the reins in her hands, and his strong hands covered hers. His warm breath brushed against her ear as he spoke, “This is how we control Phoenix.” His lips lingered for a moment longer than necessary, and the smell of jasmine from her perfume filled his senses. He took a deep breath, trying to calm his body’s reaction to her presence, “We’re going to start slow,” he said, “When you’re ready, squeeze your legs gently around Phoenix’s waist and lean forward a little.”

She held the reins tightly as the horse snorted beneath her. She lightly squeezed her legs and leaned forward, saying, “Let’s go.” The horse slowly began to move, and a huge smile crossed her face as she felt the rumble of his hooves beneath her. “I did it!” she yelled, pushing the horse into a trot.

Azim’s hearty chuckle filled the air, and his eyes sparkled with amusement as he watched her enthusiasm, “Like I said—you are remarkable,” he said in a gentle voice. “I knew you could do it.”

Khari’s cheeks flooded with warmth as his kind words floated around her. Her lips pulled into a bright beam, and a breeze rushed through her hair. It felt as if every cell in her body had been electrified. Being atop a horse was something she never dreamed she could do, yet there she was, taking in the joy that came with it.

Azim grasped the leather reins near Khari’s soft hands. His smile widened, and excitement shone in his voice, “Are you ready to take it up a notch?” he asked.

She nodded, and a smile spread across her face. She shifted in the saddle, almost imperceptibly, as if giving the horse a silent command. “Yes!” she said, her voice echoing with excitement.

“Here we go,” he called out, flicking Phoenix’s reins. The horse responded with a burst of speed, galloping through the woods, deftly dodging trees and bushes. The wind whistled past Khari’s ears as Azim’s muscled arms tightened around her waist, making her feel safe and secure. She closed her eyes, allowing herself to enjoy this moment of pure bliss and freedom. The fresh air filled her lungs as Phoenix’s powerful hooves pounded the earth, gracefully hurdling the log they had spotted in the distance. Azim felt Khari lean into him, her laughter ringing out and bouncing off the trees as they slowed down. He couldn’t help but laugh along with her, “I guess it’s fair to say you enjoyed it,” he remarked with a smile.

Her eyes lit up, and she beamed from ear to ear. “Enjoyed is an understatement!” she exclaimed, throwing her arms in the air. “That was simply incredible!” she continued to smile as if the euphoria was too powerful to contain.

“I’m glad you liked it,” he said, his face illuminated by the rising sun glow as Phoenix trotted to a gentle stop. He beamed at her, truly pleased to see the sparkle in her eyes.

“Where are we?” she asked as they joined Azim’s men.

Azim’s voice softened as he said, “A cliff on the edge of town. My men and I like to watch the sunrise together. It symbolizes our resilience and determination as it marks another day we have survived,” his eyes sparkled as if he was holding on to a secret.

Khari felt the sun peeking out from behind the horizon, its bright light illuminating the sky. Its warmth spread across her face as its golden hues reflected off the glistening dew that covered the grass. Azim sat silently behind her, his words still echoing in her ears. She felt a sense of reverence for all that she had endured and for the chance to participate in this sacred ritual, “I’m truly honored that you allowed me to partake in this tradition,” she said.

“You are always welcome. Isn’t that right, men?” he declared to his crew. They all grunted and nodded in agreement, the gesture radiating with kindness and generosity. Khari felt her cheeks flush as the rising sun illuminated each of them, casting its orange light over the horizon.

As they trotted along the winding path back to the palace, the birdsong and the clomp of Phoenix’s hooves against the cobblestone were the only sounds. She felt seen and wanted by Azim, the warmness of his presence engulfing her. By the time they reached the stable, she was overcome with conflicting emotions and felt like she would burst. Azim dismounted first and then helped her down. He sensed her inner struggle and stepped closer to her, his voice gentle. “You were pretty quiet on the way back. Is everything okay?”

Khari’s shoulders were slumped, her eyes tinted with sadness as she spoke, “I’ve always been unwanted, unloved, and alone. Being with you and your men has warmed my heart and helped me see what it’s like to be cared about. It is almost too much for me to comprehend because I have never felt wanted before,” she said softly.

Azim’s heart ached as he looked into Khari’s tear-filled eyes and heard her words. He reached out and grasped her hand, wishing he could take away the pain she felt. “Khari,” he said softly. “I promise you that as long as I’m here, you won’t ever feel that way again.”
