Chapter 380
Although Emily might have been a bit dramatic, her complaints were real. Raymond had scolded her, and now he was finally starting to understand just how much she was hurting.
Juan was about to push the door open when he caught a glimpse of the scene inside through the crack. He was stunned; it was the first time he had seen Raymond being so gentle and caring with someone.
In the past, this was unheard of.
Even when Raymond was with Abigail, Juan had never seen such tenderness. Sure, it might have happened, but he just hadn't witnessed it.
Seeing this, Juan was curious. From their behavior, it was clear they cared about each other. He wasn't sure about Emily's feelings, but Raymond definitely cared about her.
Earlier that evening, they were working late on a new project. When Raymond got a call from the principal, his face immediately changed, and he abruptly left the meeting room full of people.
That was Raymond, a guy who treated work like his life. How could he just leave a room full of people for a woman?
At first, Juan thought it was Abigail, but when he followed Raymond to the hospital, he realized it was Emily.
Even as an outsider, Juan felt relieved.
At least, the rocky relationship between these two seemed to have stabilized.
Emily, with tear-streaked cheeks, lifted her head from Raymond's embrace, still looking upset. "I was already in pain, and you didn't know what happened. You just started blaming me. How could I have had the time to inform you? I was being taken care of the whole way, and even now, after the check-up, my mind is still blank."
Raymond's guilt deepened upon hearing Emily's words.
He sighed, looking remorseful. "I'm sorry, Emily."
In truth, Emily was secretly pleased, enjoying the situation. Raymond always scolded her, making her feel wronged. Now, she had finally managed to dampen his spirits.
Raymond glanced at Emily and noticed her eyes filled with a mischievous gleam. He seemed to understand something.
He reached out and gently tugged her hair, half-smiling. "Emily? Are you playing me?"
Emily's heart skipped a beat, her little scheme exposed. She felt a bit awkward but still retorted, "Why are you pulling my hair? It hurts!"
"Don't pretend. I didn't use any force, so it couldn't have hurt." Raymond's expression was calm, but he looked at Emily with playful amusement.
He hadn't expected to be tricked by Emily.
Emily knew her act had been uncovered. She felt embarrassed. "Isn't it normal for a woman to act a bit spoiled?"
"Yeah, it's normal. This is the first time I've seen you act spoiled. You did a pretty good job." Raymond's half-smile remained.
Emily's eyes were clear and innocent like a child's. She pretended to be aggrieved. "Regardless, my grievances are real. I didn't lie about that."
"If you're really upset, then let me handle it as your husband. Don't think I'm just helping you out; we're married. Any issue between us is my responsibility, not a favor. You need to get that."
She was taken aback, a look of realization flashing in her eyes.
The next moment, she affectionately wrapped her arms around his neck and planted a kiss on his cheek. "You're such a good husband. I'll leave this matter to you. I've been really upset these past few days."
Raymond's mood improved. He held her gently, careful not to hurt her injured back.
He embraced her tenderly. "Call me 'husband' more often. I like hearing it."
Emily blushed. Though her back still hurt a bit, Raymond's comfort made the pain seem less intense.
Juan waited at the door, giving them space. Moments like these, where they got along well, were rare.
Just then, the elevator at the end of the hallway opened, and a group of people hurriedly approached.
Juan immediately recognized the principal and knocked on the door. The two inside looked up simultaneously.
Juan, standing at the door, kept his head down, not daring to look at them.
Emily's face turned red, and she pushed Raymond away.
"What's going on?" Raymond's tone was slightly annoyed, as if blaming Juan for interrupting.
"Mr. Carter, Stanley and the others are here."
The sound of footsteps outside grew louder. Emily guessed that quite a few people had arrived, likely the school leaders.
Raymond stood up, his tone cold. "Let them in."
"Yes."
Juan stepped aside, and Stanley entered first, followed by several school leaders. Audrey was the last to come in.
Seeing Raymond, Audrey's eyes first showed surprise, then she quickly lowered her head in panic.
Emily noticed Audrey trembling, clearly terrified.
She looked away.
Stanley bowed. "Mr. Carter, I'm sorry. This incident was our fault, causing harm to Mrs. Carter. We deeply apologize."
Raymond's tone was icy. "Do you think an apology is enough?"
Stanley hurriedly replied, "No, of course not. Such a serious matter can't be resolved with just an apology. We will cover Mrs. Carter's medical expenses, follow-up treatment costs, and any other compensation. Our institution will bear all costs."
Raymond's voice was cold as ice. "Compensation is necessary, but I don't need your money. Your offer is too light."
Stanley was terrified, almost ready to wet his pants. Offending Raymond was one thing, but their institution's biggest investor was Raymond. If he got angry and withdrew his investment, their entire institution would be doomed.
Thinking about this, Stanley's fear was as intense as Audrey's. She might lose her job, but he would lose his life's work.
Stanley was furious with Audrey. He should have fired her when she first started causing trouble. Then none of this would have happened.
But it was too late for regrets now.
"Ms. Carroll, apologize! Admit your mistake to Mr. Carter! Apologize to Mrs. Carter!"
