WEEKEND: VANESSA'S APARTMENT
It was a bright Saturday morning, and the house was full of excitement. Ethan and Emma, were already dressed and couldn't sit still. Today, they were going to the park with Riccardo, the friendly man they enjoyed spending time with. If only they knew. Vanessa knew they saw him as just a friend, unaware of his deeper connection to them.
And though her feelings toward Riccardo were still complicated, she'd agreed to join them today, for the kids. She would keep her distance, giving the twins space to enjoy their day with him.
Vanessa stood in the kitchen, sipping her coffee with a small smile as she watched Ethan and Emma race around in their sneakers. They practically glowed with excitement, and she felt a mix of warmth and worry. Riccardo had been clear about wanting to make things right with her, but it would take time for her to open up completely. Today, however, wasn't about their past, it was about Ethan and Emma.
The doorbell rang, and Vanessa set her mug down, taking a steadying breath. She straightened her shirt, brushed back a stray lock of hair, and opened the door to see Riccardo standing there with a friendly smile. A part of her heart softened, but she kept her expression polite, nodding at him.
"Hi, Vanessa," he greeted warmly.
"Hi, Riccardo. The kids have been ready all morning," she replied, stepping aside to let him in.
Hearing his voice, Ethan and Emma came running with big grins on their faces.
"Riccardo!" they cheered, practically bouncing in excitement as they hugged him.
"Hey, you two!" he chuckled, ruffling Ethan's hair and patting Emma's shoulder. "Are you ready to go to the park?"
"Yes!" they said in unison.
Riccardo glanced up at Vanessa. "I thought we could go to the big park downtown. There's a play area, a lake, and we can grab ice cream. Does that sound good?"
Vanessa gave a small nod. "Sounds perfect. I'll come along with you, but I'll give the kids some space to enjoy themselves with you."
He looked a bit surprised but pleased. "Alright, that sounds good."
AN HOUR LATER: AMUSEMENT PARK
The park was filled with families enjoying the sunny day. Riccardo led the way to the play area, with Ethan and Emma skipping ahead, already eager to explore and play around. Vanessa followed, keeping a bit of distance, allowing the twins the freedom to enjoy themselves with Riccardo.
"Look, Riccardo! I'm going to climb the slide!" Emma called, waving excitedly from the top of the slide.
"I'm watching, Emma!" Riccardo cheered, giving her a thumbs-up. Vanessa smiled softly, watching from a nearby bench as the twins ran around with him. She could see how much he genuinely enjoyed their company, and she couldn't deny that the kids were just as thrilled.
After a while, Riccardo took the twins to the lake, where they tried their hand at skipping stones. Ethan was focused on learning, while Emma laughed every time her stone made a splash instead of a skip. Vanessa watched from a distance, her heart swelling as she saw how happy her kids were.
"You're getting better, Ethan," Riccardo encouraged, patting the boy's shoulder.
Sitting on the bench nearby, Vanessa caught herself smiling. She couldn't remember the last time she had seen the twins this happy, and even though Riccardo's presence stirred old wounds, it was clear that he was making a real effort for their sake.
After hours of playing, Riccardo suggested they take a break for ice cream. Ethan and Emma chatted nonstop, their eyes bright as they told Riccardo about their favorite shows and funny stories from school. Vanessa listened in, staying close enough to enjoy their excitement while still giving them space.
"Riccardo," Emma said thoughtfully between bites of her ice cream, "why do you like spending time with us so much?"
Riccardo paused, his gaze softening. "Because you two are amazing, and I feel lucky to be your friend."
"Will you always be our friend?" Ethan asked, looking up with hopeful eyes.
Riccardo glanced over at Vanessa, then back at the twins. "As long as you want me to be."
***
By the time they left the park, the twins were happily exhausted. Vanessa walked beside Riccardo as they made their way back to the car, both staying quiet as the kids chatted away, recounting every little detail of their day.
When they arrived home, Ethan and Emma bounced up to Vanessa, eager to tell her every moment of the day, though she'd been there to see it all.
"Did you two have fun?" she asked, smiling as she ruffled Emma's hair.
"Yes! We went on slides, and we fed ducks, and Riccardo got us ice cream!" Ethan's words spilled out in excitement.
Riccardo smiled, watching the twins with a warmth that was hard to hide. Vanessa caught his eye, and he gave a small nod, as if silently thanking her for coming along.
Ethan and Emma ran towards their room to get ready for bed, Vanessa turned to Riccardo, her expression softening a bit.
"Thank you for today," she said. "The kids really enjoyed themselves."
He nodded, his voice gentle. "It was my pleasure. I'm glad you joined us, Vanessa. It meant a lot to me… and to them."
For a moment, they stood in silence, the past hovering between them. But as Riccardo turned to leave, Vanessa spoke up.
"I… I'm still not sure where things stand between us. But I'd like us to talk more. For the sake of my kids" She relented.
A hopeful smile crossed his face. "I'd like that, Vanessa. Thank you." He said, his gratitude evident.
With a small nod, she closed the door, leaning against it as she took a deep breath. The day had left her with more questions than answers, but she felt a little closer to the peace she'd been searching for.
