Chapter 84: Moving into Emily's House
The morning sun, as usual, peeked through the curtains of Joseph's place, casting a warm glow all over the living room.
Joseph was up early, getting everything ready for his big move. He didn't want Emily and James to take time off for him, so he figured he'd get it all done on a weekend morning while they were still catching some Z's.
He quietly hauled his luggage out of the apartment and gently closed the door, trying not to wake the neighbors.
Joseph felt a wave of gratitude wash over him. Without Emily and James's help, he might've been stuck in that apartment full of bad memories, waiting for the lease to end and then who knew what—maybe even ending up on the streets.
What he hadn't told Emily and James was that if they hadn't shown up yesterday, he was actually planning to find a place to crash for the night.
When Joseph showed up at Emily's doorstep with his luggage, he realized it might be a bit too early. He'd forgotten to text them beforehand and wasn't sure if Emily and James were up yet, so he just stood there, looking a bit lost with his three big suitcases.
He thought about waiting another half hour to let them sleep a bit more. But Emily's place was in one of those old apartment buildings with narrow hallways, and people had to squeeze past him to get by. After the fifth early bird gave him a curious look, Joseph finally got the nerve to knock on Emily's door.
Emily, rubbing her sleepy eyes, slowly opened the door and then widened them in surprise when she saw Joseph and his mountain of luggage. "Joseph! Good morning."
"Morning, Emily. I wanted to wait until you were up, but..." Joseph gave an awkward smile and pointed to the hallway where people were still passing by.
Emily got the picture and smiled, "It's okay, come on in."
"Sorry for the early wake-up call. I didn't mean to, but I guess I got here a bit too soon." Joseph stood there with an embarrassed grin. He hadn't planned on being so early, but Emily's warm smile made him feel better.
Emily shook her head, telling him not to worry.
"It's fine, we should be getting up anyway. You must be beat from moving so early. Let me help you with your bags," Emily said, reaching out to grab one.
Joseph quickly stepped in front of her. "No need, Emily. They're super heavy. I got it."
Emily thought for a second and then stepped aside, letting Joseph in. "Just leave the suitcases by the door. You probably haven't had breakfast yet. After we eat, we'll help you unpack."
"Okay, Emily." Joseph followed her inside and placed the suitcases against the wall, out of the way.
"Have a seat on the couch. I'll go freshen up. Make yourself at home; this is your home now too," Emily said as she headed to the bathroom.
Joseph nodded with a smile. "Okay, Emily, take your time."
Sunlight streamed through the half-open curtains, adding a cozy touch to Emily's living room. Joseph stood there, looking around with a mix of gratitude and unease. It was his first time crashing at someone else's place, especially a woman's, and he felt a bit awkward.
He plopped down on the couch, waiting for Emily to finish freshening up.
After a bit, Emily came out of the bathroom and saw Joseph sitting there, looking all kinds of awkward. She felt a wave of tenderness. She knew he might not be used to the new place, and she sensed he might be feeling a bit embarrassed.
Thinking of this, she decided to wake James up, hoping it would make Joseph feel more at ease.
"Hang tight for a sec. I'll go wake James," Emily said softly, her voice full of concern.
"Okay, Emily, go ahead." Hearing her, Joseph instinctively stood up, then awkwardly sat back down when he realized what she meant.
"Joseph, no need to be so nervous," Emily said with a smile, amused by his reactions. "Just treat this place like your home. We're like family."
Joseph looked up at Emily, her smile bringing him a sense of comfort. "Thanks, Emily. I'll try to relax."
Emily nodded and walked towards James's bedroom, saying, "I'll go wake James. You can watch TV or listen to music if you're bored. Make yourself at home."
Joseph nodded, then glanced around the living room and noticed some books and CDs on the shelf.
He got up and walked over, gently browsing through them, trying to chill out. He found that Emily had good taste, with some books by authors he liked and some classic music CDs.
Soon, Emily came out, followed by James, who was rubbing his eyes, still half-asleep but showing concern for Joseph. "Joseph, we didn't expect you so early. I was planning to help you move later, but you did it yourself," he said, yawning.
"Sorry, I didn't want to disturb you so early, but..." Joseph pointed outside, indicating his predicament.
Emily chimed in with a smile. "Alright, enough chit-chat. We have plenty of time to talk later. James, go freshen up. I'll make Joseph a cup of coffee."
James nodded and headed to the bathroom. Emily quickly made a cup of hot coffee for Joseph.
"Here, have some coffee. I just woke up and thought I'd freshen up first. I forgot to make you a cup," Emily said, handing the coffee to Joseph.
Joseph shook his head. "It's okay, Emily. It's my fault for coming too early."
Emily smiled, "Stop saying that. This is your home now. You can come and go as you please."
"Thanks, Emily." Joseph took the coffee, looking at Emily gratefully. The steaming warmth of the coffee brought him a comforting sense of home.
Soon, James finished freshening up and changed into casual clothes. Emily also got ready, wearing a simple dress. They both looked refreshed and ready to start the day.
"Joseph, hang on a sec. We'll be ready soon," Emily said, picking up her handbag.
"No rush, take your time," Joseph replied with a smile, enjoying the peaceful morning and the new life that was about to begin.
