Chapter 124
Sunlight streamed through the windows of the apartment in Manhattan, casting a golden sheen across the hardwood floor. Katherine sat curled up on the armchair in soft loungewear, sipping chamomile tea, her body still unwinding from the chaos of the last few weeks. A gentle knock came at the door before it eased open.
“Hey,” Carolina said, poking her head in. She was dressed in a fitted tracksuit, her curly hair pulled into a loose bun, face bare but radiant.
Katherine perked up. “Hey, come in.”
Carolina stepped in, a wide grin on her face. “Guess what?”
“What?”
“I got my ankle monitor removed this morning.”
Katherine’s eyes widened, a joyful gasp escaping her lips.
“Carolina!”
“I know,” Carolina said, walking in fully now. “The feds said Beth came in to release all charges. So, I’m officially free.”
Katherine set down her mug and rose to her feet, hugging her tightly. “That’s amazing. Thank God.”
Carolina stepped back, laughing. “It feels so good not to walk around with that thing beeping every time I pass a microwave.”
Katherine chuckled. “Kingsley’s father had to go speak with her. You know… tell her to drop the charges, and to divorce Kingsley.”
Carolina’s brows shot up. “Wait, what? He made her do it?”
Katherine nodded, her voice calmer now. “Yeah. He laid it all out for her, no more games. She’s finally going to sign the divorce papers. They’re finalizing everything.”
Carolina exhaled, placing a hand on her chest. “Finally. You can have your man to yourself.”
Katherine smiled, eyes soft. “Feels surreal.”
“So…” Carolina leaned in teasingly. “Does this mean Kingsley’s parents have officially accepted you?”
Katherine nodded, almost in disbelief. “Seems so. They even apologized for how they treated me. Said thank you for saving Kingsley.”
Carolina’s eyes filled with warmth. “Katherine, that’s incredible. Now nothing can come between you and Kingsley’s love.”
Katherine’s smile turned wistful. “Yeah. We’re finally starting to breathe again.”
“How’s he doing?” Carolina asked gently, easing into the armchair across from her.
“He’s still undergoing treatment. The trauma was deep, both physical and mental. He’s going to therapy, and seeing a specialist. But he’s getting better, slowly.”
Carolina nodded solemnly. “Good. Please tell him I’m praying for a speedy recovery.”
“I will,” Katherine said. “And thank you for everything. For standing by me. For believing in my truth.”
“Always.”
A small silence settled between them, warm and comfortable like a well-worn blanket.
Then Carolina broke it. “So… I’ll be going back to Brooklyn tomorrow.”
Katherine blinked. “Really?”
“Yeah. Devon’s driving me. I need to rest and reconnect. Maybe see what’s next for me, you know? Since I lost my job because of all this…”
Katherine leaned forward, reaching for her hand. “About that… Kingsley and I spoke. He wants you to come work at his company.”
Carolina blinked. “What?”
“He said he’ll give you a very good position, executive-level, high salary. Comes with a car and a luxury apartment. His way of saying thank you.”
Carolina’s jaw dropped. “Oh my God. Wait, little way? Are you kidding me? This is the biggest thing that’s ever happened to me!”
Katherine laughed. “Getting a job there is hard. You know that.”
“Exactly!” Carolina was already sitting straighter. “I used to dream of just getting through their first interview round! And now I’m getting a car and an apartment? Yes, yes, yes. Tell him thank you. I’ll take it. With my whole chest.”
Katherine grinned. “I knew you’d say yes.”
Carolina looked at her, still stunned. “So when I get back, I’ll pack my bags and prepare to leave Brooklyn?”
Katherine nodded slowly. “Yeah. That’s the plan.”
Carolina tilted her head. “What about you?”
“I would’ve gone back with you,” Katherine said softly, “but I need to stay a little longer. Kingsley still needs me. Once he’s recovered fully, I’ll come back to Brooklyn, pack my things…”
Her smile widened. “And I’ll be moving to Manhattan too. His father gifted me a building here.”
Carolina’s mouth opened again. “Stop.”
Katherine nodded. “I’m starting my café again, but this time in Manhattan.”
Carolina stood and crossed the room to pull her into another hug. “Oh my God. I’m so happy for you. For us. Look at our lives turning around.”
“Me too,” Katherine whispered, hugging her tightly. “Me too.”
They stayed there for a long moment, two women who had been through storms, finally standing in the sunlight.
The golden glow of sunset bled through the tall windows of the Manhattan skyline, painting soft amber light across the floor-to-ceiling drapes. The entire penthouse was quiet, serene, a comforting contrast to the chaos they had both endured.
Katherine walked in quietly behind Kingsley, supporting him gently by the arm as he returned from another long day of therapy and physical rehabilitation. His shoulders were stronger now, the bruises fading, but healing was still a climb. Every small movement reminded him of how much he had endured, and how much further he had to go.
But she had never left his side.
“You sure you’re okay?” Katherine asked as they stepped into his suite.
Kingsley gave a small nod, exhaling as he eased himself onto the edge of his massive, luxurious bed. “Yeah. Just… tired.”
She placed his medication on the nightstand, then returned to his side, eyes soft with concern. Kingsley turned to look at her, his eyes lingering, full of depth, reverence, a longing that had been growing with every hour they spent together again.
Then his voice came low, tender.
“Why don’t you stay awhile?” he said.
Katherine’s brows lifted slightly.
“I’ve missed you,” he added, his voice hoarse and honest, “so damn much.”
She gave him a small, sweet smile and nodded. “Okay.” She slid onto the bed beside him, sitting on the thick, high-thread-count comforter, her body angled toward his.
There was a moment of stillness between them. Not silence, because their breathing, their closeness, and the soft creak of the mattress said more than words ever could.
Kingsley reached for her hand and held it gently in his.
“Thank you, Katherine.”
She tilted her head slightly. “For what?”
His voice broke a little on the next sentence. “You’re literally an angel.”
Her eyes softened.
“After all I did… the lies, the distance, the pain I caused, you still stood by me. When no one else believed me, when I couldn’t even remember who I was, you were the one who looked into my eyes and saw the real me.”
She swallowed gently, blinking back emotion.
“You recognized the fake Kingsley when even my own parents were unsure. You convinced your best friend to risk her entire career, just so I wouldn’t be in danger. You didn’t just wait for answers. You fought for them. You fought for me.”
He looked down briefly, overwhelmed, then returned his gaze to her.
“You came into that hellish lab. You knew the risk yet you came anyway. And now you’re still here… still helping me recover, holding my hand through every damn therapy session and nightmare. If this isn’t love, Katherine… I don’t know what is.”
Katherine blinked, her chest tight, throat thick with emotion. Her lips trembled just slightly, but she didn’t say anything yet. She didn’t need to.
Kingsley shifted to face her more directly, his hand now cradling her cheek.
“Katherine,” he said, voice firm but gentle. “I vow to you today, right here in this room, in this moment I will never make you cry again, not from pain, not from betrayal, not from heartbreak. I will never give you a reason to regret choosing me.”
Her eyes welled up.
“I will love and cherish you until the grave. I will worship the ground you walk on and the very air you breathe. You are my queen. My everything. The one that really matters. The only one who’s ever really mattered.”
He leaned in.
Slowly. Purposefully.
And kissed her.
Their lips met softly at first, tender, searching, melting into each other like they’d been waiting for this moment forever. And then deeper, their mouths opening, their tongues meeting in a slow, sensual rhythm. The kiss wasn’t rushed. It was reverent. Hungry in a quiet, sacred way, like a homecoming wrapped in silk and promises.
Katherine leaned closer, her hand curling against his chest, feeling his heartbeat under her palm. Kingsley slid a hand to the small of her back, pulling her in until there was barely space between them.
The kiss deepened until Kingsley slowly drew away from Katherine’s lips, his breath warm against her cheek. He trailed his mouth gently along her jawline, down to her neck, where he placed soft, lingering kisses. Her breath hitched, her eyes fluttering closed as she tilted her head to give him more access.
His fingers reached for the zipper of her gown, slowly pulling it down with the patience of a man savoring every second. The fabric slipped off her shoulders, gliding down her body until it pooled silently at her waist. He helped her step out of it, never breaking eye contact. Now, in nothing but her delicate bra and panties, she looked like a dream to him, like everything he’d ever wanted and almost lost.
“You’re perfect,” he whispered, his voice low and reverent.
He kissed the curve of her shoulder, her collarbone, then made his way down, lips brushing over the swell of her chest, her stomach, her hips. Every kiss was slow, unhurried, as if he were memorizing her with his mouth.
Her hands found his shoulders, gripping softly, her head falling back with every soft, teasing lick along her navel.
Her breath quickened, her chest rising and falling as waves of pleasure rippled through her body. He kissed along her thighs, drawing gentle sighs from her lips.
Returning to her mouth briefly, he kissed her again, deeper this time, hot and full of longing. Then he reached behind her and unfastened her bra, sliding it off slowly. His eyes roamed over her, dark with desire and tenderness. He leaned in again, kissing down her chest, then taking one of her breasts into his warm mouth while his hand caressed the other.
Katherine moaned softly, her fingers tangling in his hair, her body arching toward his touch. He kissed lower again, gently pulling down her panties, inch by inch, until she was completely bare beneath him.
Kingsley moved between her thighs, lifting her leg gently over his shoulder, and lowered his mouth onto her. The sensation drew a sharp, surprised gasp from Katherine’s lips, her hands gripping the sheets. His tongue moved slowly at first, teasing, exploring her in intimate, deliberate strokes. Her back arched as moans escaped her lips, soft at first, then growing louder as he increased his rhythm.
At the same time, his hands reached up to cup her breasts, caressing and playing with her sensitive peaks, drawing even more pleasure from her body. Her hips lifted off the bed, her body trembling under his touch.
“K-Kingsley…” she whispered, breathless.
He didn’t stop.
Her moans filled the quiet room, soft and breathless at first, then louder, needier, as the waves of pleasure built inside her. She arched against him, her fingers gripping the sheets, her head thrown back in pure bliss.
“Kingsley,” she whispered. Then again, louder, and again, as if his name was the only anchor in a sea of overwhelming sensation.
When her release hit, it took her completely. Her entire body tensed and trembled, shuddering around the intensity of the moment. Kingsley held her gently through it, letting her ride every wave, his hands steady and warm against her skin.
He kissed her thighs tenderly, then moved up her body, trailing soft kisses along her stomach, her chest, and her neck. He met her lips again, and when he pulled back, his eyes searched hers.
“I need you,” he said softly, his voice thick with emotion.
Katherine nodded, her breathing still shaky, eyes shining.
“Take me.”
Kingsley stood and pulled off his clothes slowly, his body lean and strong, still marked with bruises from the lab. But in that moment, he didn’t look broken, he looked whole. Whole because of her. For her.
He settled between her legs, her body welcoming him, already warm and ready for him. As he entered her slowly, Katherine gasped, their eyes locked, their breaths mingling.
He moved with care at first, as if he couldn’t believe this was real. The way she wrapped her arms around him, the way her legs instinctively curled around his waist, the way her body fit perfectly with his, he savored it all.
They moved together in rhythm, as if time had melted, as if the world outside didn’t exist. There was nothing but them. Their connection was more than physical, it was healing, sacred, a reclaiming of everything that had nearly been lost.
He whispered her name over and over like a vow.
She held his face between her hands, her eyes brimming with emotion. “I love you, Kingsley.”
He pressed his forehead to hers. “I love you more than I can ever say.”
They made love for a long time, slow, tender, deep, until they collapsed into each other, tangled in warmth and sweat and whispered promises. It wasn’t just desire. It was devotion. Home. Healing.
In her arms, Kingsley finally found peace.
