Chapter 20

My gaze fell upon the ring on my finger. Our love had been forged in the fires of patience and perseverance. Anticipation thrummed through me, I couldn't wait to see Dimitri, to feel his presence, to hear his voice, to tell him how much he meant to me, how much I loved him.

A wave of giggles and a sense of mesmerization washed over me, leaving me breathless. I stepped out onto the balcony and watched how the day faded, the sun dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in vibrant hues of orange and purple. My routine in the past two weeks felt empty and lifeless.

A slow smile played on my lips, my fingers tracing the cool metal of the balcony railing. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of blooming jasmine and the distant hum of the city. I was lost at the moment, my thoughts drifting, when a sudden roar shattered the peaceful silence. Two sleek black transporters screeched to a halt in front of the mansion's gate. My heart skipped a beat, a sense of foreboding settled over me.

"Elena?" I whispered, the name barely audible, my eyes widening in disbelief as armed figures emerged from the transporters. Their movements were swift, their faces etched with grim determination. One of them, his eyes scanning the grounds, caught sight of me on the balcony.

"That's the woman," he barked. He raised his gun and aimed it directly at me. I was frozen, paralyzed by fear, my body unable to react as the deafening roar of gunfire erupted. A searing pain ripped through my shoulder, sending shockwaves through my body.

The world tilted, a dizzying spin as the searing pain in my shoulder pulsed with each ragged breath. I was falling, my grip on the railing lost, the balcony railing a distant memory. But then, a strong hand clamped onto my arm.

"Madam," Nolan's voice filled with worry, "Take her to safety, Laurel." He spoke with a calm authority. Laurel stepped forward, his expression grim but resolute. He gently guided me away from the balcony, his movements swift and efficient as he led me towards the safety of the mansion.

"Be careful, Nolan," I whispered, my voice barely a breath. The sound of gunfire echoed behind me.

"Nolan will be alright," Laurel said, his voice calm and reassuring. "Those guys are after you, Madam. Our mission here is to protect you. Right now, there will be someone waiting for you in the backyard. He will take you to safety."

Laurel continued to guide me towards the backyard, but before we could reach the door, a deafening roar shattered the mansion. A bullet whizzed past my ear, a searing hot breath that sent shivers down my spine. Laurel stumbled, his grip on my arm loosening as a wave of pain washed over his face. He had been shot, the bullet tearing through his right arm.

"Go, Madam! Don't mind me," He pushed me towards the door, "Get to safety! I'll hold them off!"

Even if my heart ached with the desire to help them both, to fight alongside them, I knew that staying would only put them in greater danger. Stubbornness had no place in this situation, and my presence would only serve to hinder their efforts. With a heavy heart, I obeyed Laurel's command, my feet pounding on the ground as I raced towards the backyard.

The sound of gunfire echoed behind me. My body trembled, but I forced myself to push the memories aside. I had to reach the backyard.

As I burst through the mansion doors, my eyes scanned the darkened backyard, searching for the figure Laurel had mentioned. There, parked near the edge of the sprawling lawn, stood a sleek black car, its headlights casting an eerie glow on the surrounding foliage. I didn't hesitate, my instincts taking over as I raced towards it. The passenger door swung open, inviting me in, and without a second thought, I slipped into the seat.

I sank back into the plush leather of the seat, my head throbbing. The pain, which had been muted by the adrenaline rush, now surged through me, sharp and intense, a throbbing ache that pulsed with each beat of my heart. I could feel the warmth of my blood seeping through my clothes.

A wave of dizziness washed over me. I was losing blood, and if I didn't get help soon, I might not make it.

A gasp escaped my lips, a choked sound of pain and fear, as I reached for my shoulder, my hand pressing against the gaping wound. I tried to staunch the flow of blood, but it was no use. The blood continued to seep, a steady, relentless stream that threatened to drain my life. My vision blurred, the world around me fading into a haze. But then, a sudden movement, a jarring sound, broke through the haze of my pain.

The driver's side door swung open. A figure emerged from the car, his silhouette stark against the dim light of the mansion's windows. As my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I realized we were still in the mansion's backyard.

A shiver ran down my spine as I felt something hard and cold pressed against my hands. My heart pounded in my chest, a frantic drumbeat of fear as I turned my head, my gaze falling upon the lifeless body lying on the seat beside me. The man's eyes were wide open, staring blankly at me. A wave of nausea washed over me when the door beside me swung open. A figure, tall and imposing, stepped into the dim light, his features obscured by the shadows.

My breath caught in my throat, my eyes widening in disbelief as I recognized the familiar outline of the man's form. A slow, predatory smile stretched across his face. The tension in my body tightened, the fear constricting my chest, and the blood from my shoulder began to flow more freely.

"Long time no see, Ophelia," he purred, his voice a chilling whisper, a serpent's hiss that sent shivers down my spine. Even in the dim light, I could see his face clearly, his eyes burning with a cold, malevolent fire. "I've been waiting for this moment for eight years. You slipped through my fingers once, but not this time." He reached for me, his hand outstretched. But I had no intention of letting him touch me.

I gathered the last vestiges of strength in my body and delivered a powerful kick to his chest. He stumbled back, surprised by my sudden attack. I didn't hesitate. I took myself out of the car and ran. I need to escape, to get away from this monster who shattered my world eight years ago. But he was faster than I thought. His hand clamped onto my hair, a vice-like grip that pulled me back, forcing me to face him.

"Stubborn as ever," he snarled. His fist connected with my stomach, a blow that sent a wave of pain radiating through my body. I gasped, a strangled cry escaping my lips, my mouth filling with the metallic taste of blood. But he didn't stop. He dragged me towards the front of the car, his grip on my hair tightening with each step, a grip that threatened to tear my scalp from my head.

He forced my head down, my face pressed against the cold asphalt, the blinding headlights of the car shining directly into my eyes. I struggled against his grip, my body wracked with pain, my vision blurring, but it was no use.

His face hovered over mine, his breath hot and fetid against my skin. He traced his tongue across my cheek, a slow, deliberate movement that sent a shiver of revulsion down my spine. My skin, slick with sweat and blood, felt clammy and cold beneath his touch.

"Let's see if you can escape this time, Ophelia. Your luck has run out," he whispered, his voice a chilling caress that sent a shiver down my spine. I was about to hiss back, to defy him, to fight for my life, but before I could utter a single word, he whipped out a cloth and pressed it against my nose.

The scent of ether, sharp and pungent, filled my nostrils, a suffocating wave that drowned me. I struggled, my body writhing in protest, but it was no use. The world began to spin, the darkness closing in, and then, everything went black.
