Chapter 17: Echoes Of The Past
Chapter Seventeen: Echoes of the Past
The night was still. Outside my window, the crickets softly hummed their gentle song. I got into bed and settled myself under the blanket. The house was quiet, unnervingly so. Peter had retired early, a thunderstorm of silence having hovered over him since dinner. I tried reading to distract myself, but the words on the page blurred together as my mind began to wander.
I was trapped between the echoes of my past and the weight of my present. My heart felt like a battleground, torn between two men and two versions of myself—one that belonged to Peter, steady and responsible, and one that seemed to awaken only when Ryan reentered my life.
The sudden vibration of my phone on the nightstand startled me. I reached for it, my heart skipping a beat when I saw Ryan's name glowing in the screen. For a moment, I hesitated, my thumb hovering over the answer button.
Finally, I picked up. "Hello?"
Emma," Ryan's voice came through the line, low and warm. It was enough to send a rush of emotions pouring through me-nostalgia, longing, and a dash of trepidation.
"Ryan," I whispered, my voice barely audible.
"Did I wake you?" he asked, the softness in his tone considerate.
"No," I said, leaning back against the headboard. "I couldn't sleep anyway."
There was a pause, a weighty silence full of words unspoken.
"I've been thinking about you," he admitted, breaking the quiet. "About us."
His words sent a shiver down my spine. "Ryan, it's been years. So much has changed."
"Has it?" he countered gently. "Because when I saw you the other day, it felt like no time had passed. Like we were still. us."
I closed my eyes, his words tugging at a part of me I had buried long ago. "It's not that simple," I murmured. "Life happened. We both moved on."
"Did we?" he asked. "Because I don't think I ever really did."
The raw honesty in his voice caught me off guard. Memories of our time together rushed back: late-night drives, lazy Sunday mornings, the way he used to look at me as if I was the only person in the world.
"Ryan," I began, my voice shaking. "We ended for a reason."
"I know," he said quickly. "And I take full responsibility for that. I was young, stupid. I didn't know what I had until I lost it. But Emma, seeing you again—God, it felt like I was getting a second chance at something I thought was gone forever."
His words came at me like a tidal wave, as if to sweep me away. "You don't even know if I'm available," I said, trying to infuse the exchange with some much-needed realism.
"Are you?" he asked, his voice tinged with vulnerability.
The question hung in the air, and for a moment, I didn't know how to respond. Was I? My marriage to Peter felt like a house built on shaky ground, and yet it was still standing. Did that mean I was still committed, or was I just afraid to tear it all down?
"I don't know," I admitted finally. "It's complicated."
"I don't want to complicate your life, Emma," he whispered. "But I also can't pretend like I don't still care about you. I have to know if there is any chance whatsoever of our ever finding each other again.
The tears pricked the corners of my eyes. "Ryan, it isn't just us anymore. There are other people now. Other lives.
"I understand that," he said. "But can you honestly tell me you don't feel anything? That seeing me again didn't stir something in you?"
I couldn't. The truth was, seeing Ryan had unearthed feelings I thought I'd buried. But admitting that felt like a betrayal—not just to Peter, but to myself.
"What do you want from me, Ryan?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
"I want to see you," he said simply. "Not in passing, not by chance. I want to sit down with you, talk to you, figure out what this is—what it could be."
His request was straightforward, but it felt monumental. Agreeing to see him felt like stepping onto a path I wasn't sure I was ready to walk.
"When?" I asked, surprising myself.
"Whenever you're ready," he said.
I thought about it, my mind racing. "A week from today," I said finally. "I'll meet you then."
The relief in his voice was palpable. "Thank you, Emma. That's all I'm asking for-a chance."
We said our goodbyes, and as I hung up, I felt this crazy jumble of emotions: hope, fear, guilt, and something else I couldn't quite name.
I set my phone down and lay back against the pillows, my mind drifting to the past. Memories of Ryan played like a reel in my head: the first time we met, the laughter we shared, the way he used to hold me when the world felt too heavy.
And then the ending, the heartbreak that had shattered us both. He’d left without warning, chasing dreams that didn’t include me. I’d been devastated, picking up the pieces of my life while trying to understand how someone who claimed to love me could walk away so easily.
But now, years later, he was back, saying all the things I'd longed to hear back then. And despite my best efforts to guard my heart, a part of me couldn't help but wonder: had we been given a second chance for a reason?
It was the soft snore from Peter in the other room that broke my thoughts and reminded me of the present. I was still married, still tied to a man who, flawed as he might be, had once been my everything.
As the night wore on, I felt suspended between two worlds: the life I knew and the life I might've lived. And no matter how hard I tried to still them,
one question would not be silenced:
