Chapter 536: Bringing Alicia Back
After dealing with the two fish, the three of them enjoyed a hearty lunch.
Olivia had never experienced such a laid-back day. This place had no internet, no malls, and only the simplest means of communication.
After lunch, Olivia and Philip walked out into the snowy field beside the cabin.
Both were bundled up warmly, with wool gloves on their hands. Olivia wrapped her scarf tightly around her neck, and together with Philip, they started building a snowman.
The chilly wind blew from all directions, clearing Olivia's mind considerably.
Olivia had always thought that Daniel didn't know she was still alive. But now, thinking back, Daniel must have known for a while, and her recent movements were likely already exposed.
Thinking about this made Olivia a bit anxious. She grabbed a handful of snow, formed it into a snowball, and hurled it at a nearby tree.
The tree branches shook, and a clump of snow fell onto Philip's hat-covered head.
Philip laughed, hurriedly brushing the snow off himself, and ran towards Olivia.
"Mommy, hug."
Olivia pulled him into her arms and brushed the snow off his face. "Go on, play by yourself for a bit."
Olivia wasn't trying to send the child away; Tobias was approaching.
He held a handgun in his hand and handed it to Olivia. "After everything you've been through, you probably lost your last gun. Take this one and protect yourself if you encounter danger."
Olivia knew Tobias couldn't be with her 24/7. She solemnly accepted the black handgun. "Thanks."
"I told you, there's no need for thanks between us. Do you remember the shooting lessons I gave you?"
Olivia nodded. She would never forget the time on the island, nor how to shoot.
"Good. I'll count down from three. Shoot at that hole in the tree over there to test your skills."
It had been a long time since Olivia had handled a gun. Hearing Tobias's command made her a bit nervous.
As she hesitated, Tobias's countdown began.
"Three, two..."
Before the final second fell, Olivia pulled the trigger, and the bullet hit the spot Tobias had indicated.
Olivia carefully put the gun away, smiling. "It's been a while since I handled a gun, but it seems my skills are still sharp."
"In a way, you'd make a good assassin," Tobias casually complimented, which reminded Olivia of past events.
Back then, she had lost her child and felt life had no meaning. She had asked to join the assassin training.
Daniel had agreed on the surface, but realizing she couldn't be controlled, he had injected her with a memory-erasing drug.
Thinking about the time she lost her memory, Olivia's expression darkened.
No one liked being played, especially by someone they once trusted the most.
"There's a tunnel under the floorboard near the fireplace in this cabin. I might be away for a while. If you encounter danger, don't confront them head-on. Find a way to escape or ensure your safety first."
Tobias laid out all the escape routes. Olivia nodded seriously. After their conversation, Tobias returned to the cabin, and Olivia went back to Philip.
"Mommy, what were you talking about with Tobias?"
These topics weren't suitable for children. Before getting married, Olivia had wished for her children to have a peaceful and happy childhood. She felt she owed these two kids and could only make it up to them with double the love.
"Nothing, just adult stuff. It's a secret."
Olivia winked at Philip. He didn't understand what she meant, dropped the snow in his hands, and threw himself into her arms.
"Everyone else has a dad. Who's my dad?"
Philip and Alicia, though still young, had matured too quickly due to their early experiences.
Olivia didn't know how to answer his question. She didn't want to tell Philip about Daniel's identity or have any further connection with that man. She could only put on a sorrowful expression.
"Daddy passed away."
Olivia gently stroked Philip's head. "But don't worry, I'll take extra good care of you."
She didn't feel guilty about this lie.
After all, Daniel had never been part of the children's lives. They probably didn't even know him. People who were never meant to intersect didn't need to know each other.
Though Philip was still young, he had seen enough blood and death while hiding with Tobias to understand what "passed away" meant. His eyes showed some confusion, but he still hugged Olivia. "Mommy, don't be sad. Philip will protect you."
Death was a scary concept for a child. Olivia felt a twinge of guilt but no regret.
On a nearby mountain peak, Daniel suddenly sneezed twice.
Joseph handed him a pack of tissues. "I told you the weather's too cold. Mr. Wilson, you insisted on standing in the snow. Now you've caught a cold."
Daniel showed no expression, lightly pinching his nose.
In front of Daniel was a high-powered telescope, its lens trained on Olivia and Philip.
Since learning that Olivia's situation was also unsafe, Daniel hadn't slept a wink, instructing Wesley to investigate those people's true intentions while he stood in the snow, watching Olivia and Philip.
Seeing the sweet interaction between mother and son, Daniel felt deep regret.
If he had known it would come to this, he wouldn't have been so ruthless.
He wouldn't have hurt Olivia so recklessly, all for the sake of revenge.
Daniel's heart was cold, colder than the swirling snow around him.
If he hadn't made those mistakes, he would now be holding Olivia and their three children, happily watching the snow.
But now, everything was shattered. He couldn't even approach Olivia, only watch her being protected by someone else.
If he could turn back time, Daniel would never let things play out the same way.
Joseph, unable to understand Daniel's feelings, stood by and shared his findings. "Tobias seems to be heading to the island to bring back Alicia."
"She wants both kids with her. That's understandable," Daniel said.
Alicia couldn't live without her mother's care.
