Chapter 20: Rebuilding Trust

Julian woke up with a gasp. He was sweating, his heart beating like a drum. He sat up in bed, looking around wildly. Evelyn wasn’t there. Liam wasn’t there. He was alone.

It had all been a dream. Or… had it?

He looked at his hands. They were shaking. He could still feel the fear, the urgency, the feeling of Liam slipping away.

He threw off the covers and jumped out of bed. He had to find Liam. He had to make sure he was okay.

He ran out of his room and down the hall, calling Liam’s name. But there was no answer.

He ran to the living room. Empty. He ran to the kitchen. Empty.

He was starting to worry. Where was Liam? Had he really gone after Cassandra? Had he really stepped through that portal?

He ran to the front door and threw it open, ready to go looking for him.

But then he saw him.

Liam was standing on the balcony, looking out at the city. The sun was just starting to rise, throwing a golden glow over everything. He looked peaceful, calm. But there was also something… absent about him.

Julian walked slowly towards him, his heart still racing.

"Liam?" he said softly.

Liam turned around, his eyes meeting Julian’s. There was a spark of recognition in them, but also something else. Something hidden.

"Julian," he said, his voice calm. "What are you doing up so early?"

Julian frowned. He didn’t like this Liam. This calm, detached Liam. He wanted the old Liam back. The Liam who laughed and smiled and teased him. The Liam who cared.

"I… I had a bad dream," Julian said. "I dreamt that you… that you went after Cassandra. That you… that you changed."

Liam’s face hardened. "It wasn’t a dream, Julian. It was real. I did go after Cassandra. And I did change."

Julian stepped closer to him, reaching out to touch his arm. But Liam flinched away, just like he had done last night.

"Don’t," Liam said, his voice sharp. "I don’t want to hurt you."

Julian’s heart sank. "You’re not going to hurt me, Liam. I’m your friend. I want to help you."

Liam shook his head. "You can’t help me, Julian. No one can. This is something I have to do on my own."

"But you’re not alone, Liam!" Julian objected. "You have me. You have Evelyn. We’re here for you."

Liam looked away, looking out at the city again. "I don’t know if I can trust anyone anymore, Julian. Not even you."

Julian felt like he’d been hit in the gut. "What? Why would you say that? What did I do?"

Liam didn’t answer. He just kept looking at the city, his face unreadable.

Julian felt a surge of anger. He didn’t deserve this. He had done everything he could to help Liam. He had risked his life for him. And this was how he was repaid? With mistrust?

"Fine!" Julian said, his voice rising. "If that’s how you feel, then fine! I’m not going to force you to be my friend. I’m not going to force you to trust me. You can just go off and do whatever you want, all by yourself. See if I care!"

He turned and stormed back inside, closing the door behind him.

He went back to his room and fell on the bed, his face buried in his pillow. He felt hurt, angry, and confused. He didn’t understand what was happening. He didn’t understand why Liam was pushing him away.

He wished he could turn back time. He wished he could go back to the way things were before. Before Cassandra, before the link, before Liam changed.

But he couldn’t. The past was the past. All he could do was try to fix things now.

He took a deep breath and sat up. He knew he couldn’t give up on Liam. He cared about him too much.

He had to find a way to get through to him. He had to find a way to regain their trust.

But how?

He thought back to the times when he and Liam had been closest. He remembered their first meeting, the way they had fought at first, but then slowly started to understand each other. He remembered the night they had shared their deepest secrets, the night they had admitted their feelings for each other.

He remembered the moment when he understood that Liam wasn’t just his arranged husband. He was his partner.

He closed his eyes, trying to summon those memories, trying to feel that link again.

He opened his eyes and stood up. He knew what he had to do.

He walked back out to the balcony. Liam was still there, still staring at the city.

Julian walked slowly towards him, his heart racing. He stopped a few feet away, taking a deep breath.

"Liam," he said softly. "I’m sorry."

Liam didn’t turn around. "What are you sorry for?"

"I’m sorry for getting angry," Julian said. "I’m sorry for pushing you. I just… I miss you. I miss the way things were before."

Liam was still silent.

"I know you’re going through a lot right now," Julian added. "I know you’re scared. But you don’t have to go through it alone. I’m here for you. I’ll always be here for you."

Liam finally turned around, his eyes meeting Julian’s. There was a spark of something in them. Something that looked like hope.

"You don’t understand, Julian," Liam said, his voice barely a whisper. "I’m not the same person anymore. I’m… I’m dangerous."

"I don’t care," Julian said, taking a step closer. "I still love you, Liam. No matter what."

He reached out and took Liam’s hand. This time, Liam didn’t flinch away. He just stood there, his hand shaking in Julian’s.

Julian squeezed his hand tightly, trying to comfort him. "We’ll get through this, Liam. Together. I promise."

Liam looked at Julian, his eyes filled with tears. "Thank you," he said, his voice breaking. "Thank you for not giving up on me."

Julian smiled, relief flowing through him. "I’ll never give up on you, Liam. Never."

He pulled Liam into a hug, holding him tightly. He could feel Liam shaking in his arms. He knew this was just the beginning of a long and difficult journey. But he was ready for it. As long as he had Liam by his side.

They stood there for a long time, just holding each other, watching the sun rise over the city. For the first time since the fight, Julian felt a sense of hope. Maybe, just maybe, they could get through this. Maybe they could rebuild their trust. Maybe they could find a way to bring the old Liam back.

But as they stood there, a strange feeling washed over Julian. He felt a tingle in his skin, a buzzing in his ears. He looked at Liam, and saw that he was glowing. Not with the soft, golden light of the sunrise, but with a dark, ominous spirit.

"Liam?" Julian said, his voice filled with concern. "What’s happening?"

Liam looked down at his hands, his eyes wide with fear. "I… I don’t know," he said, his voice shaking. "I can’t control it!"

The dark energy around Liam intensified, getting stronger and stronger. Julian felt a surge of fear. He knew something terrible was about to happen.

Suddenly, Liam screamed. A loud, sharp scream that echoed through the city.

And then, he fell to the ground, unconscious.

Julian knelt beside him, his heart racing. "Liam! Liam, wake up!"

But Liam didn’t reply. He just lay there, still and dead.

Julian felt a surge of fear. What had happened? Was he dead?

He put his ear to Liam’s chest, listening for a beating.

Nothing.

Julian’s world began to spin. He couldn’t lose Liam. He just couldn’t.

He started CPR, pumping Liam’s chest, breathing into his mouth. He kept going, even though his arms were hurting and his lungs were burning.

He had to save him. He just had to.

After what felt like a lifetime, he finally felt something. A weak heartbeat.

Liam was living!

Julian let out a sigh of relief, falling beside him. He was tired, but he didn’t care. Liam was living. That’s all that counted.

He looked at Liam’s face, his heart filled with love and thanks.

But then, he saw something that made his blood run cold.

Liam’s eyes were open. But they weren’t the same eyes he knew and loved. They were glowing with that dark, ominous energy. And they were looking straight at him.

"Hello, Julian," Liam said, his voice cold and lifeless. "It’s been a while."

Julian stared at him, his mind spinning. Who was this? What had happened to Liam?

And then, he realized the truth.

Liam wasn’t Liam anymore.

He was something else. Something dark. Something bad.

And he was looking right at Julian, with a look of pure hate in his eyes.
