Chapter 93
I knew it wasn’t right to worry someone who was on a date, so I grabbed my bag and the rest of my essentials and bolted out of the house the moment I got a call from Victor. He told me to come to Hatty's Hospital immediately.
A bloody fight had broken out between two women. The offender was found dead—or in this case, she was too weak to heal and died halfway to the hospital.
The victim suffered traumatic brain shock, internal fatal trauma, and third-degree burns all over her body. The burns were caused by wolfsbane and may have been the main cause of death.
1 HOUR, 30 MINUTES AGO
Cecil twirled in her dress in front of the mirror, giggling while I packed all her makeup and put it back in the boxes.
And people think a Luna gets more respect and rest.
“Okay, seriously, you need to go. Haven't you heard of the saying; if you keep staring at your reflection, you're going to be ugly. You haven't heard of it?” I pushed the boxes under her shoe shelf since I wasn't tall enough to put them back on their original spot.
She glared at me. “Spit on the floor. Don't ruin tonight. I'm going to make sure I look good for my mate.” She went back to staring at her reflection. “I want to look hot and super adorable,” she said in a singsong voice.
Sure.
“I heard that some men aren't really into sexy women, like fierce sexy women.” She picked a white speck from the hem of the dress and blew it away.
Yeah, you did.
“Do I smell self-esteem build up?”
“Or you're just jealous.”
“Well, keep twirling like Cinderella and your prince is going to get tired of waiting, and he'll leave. Then the reserved, adorable image you spent hours creating is going to get washed away by your sweat.” I tossed her bag to her and picked mine.
“Gosh, I hate you right now.” She straightened the dress for the twenty-seventh time. “Drop me off, and don’t bother coming to pick me up. I want to be a damsel in distress.” She laughed to herself.
Sure, Cinderella.
“Wait. Do I smell nice enough? I couldn’t settle for a scent so I just mixed everything,” she worriedly asked.
“No wonder you smell like you were plucked out of a flower garden,” I replied.
“Well, that’s all the answer I need.” She exhaled, smacking her lips together as we walked out of the house.
I bit down a laugh. “What if he’s allergic to one of them?”
She glared at me, head raised high, chest puffed out. “You’re not going to ruin my night or my date. If he is allergic, then we’ll bond at the hospital. Take your sadistic self out of my way; I want to lock the door.”
The moment I dropped her off, I went straight back home to freshen up and look for something to snack on. I was already dressed for the night and was about to plop onto the bed to select a Korean drama to watch when my phone buzzed.
A text from Zara, then Damon, then Victor.
I sighed and opened Zara’s text first. ‘Hatty's Hospital’ it read.
Okay, weird.
Typo?
Next was Damon. His message was short and unusual: ‘Hatty's Hospital, ASAP.’ I frowned.
What's going on.
Finally, Victor’s text: ‘Hatty's Hospital, it's an emergency, I can't text you all the details’ Great. Just what I needed.
More text that didn't really say what was going on.
I groaned, throwing my phone on the bed. My quiet night was slipping away. I quickly texted Damon back, asking what it was about, and got no response. Typical.
With a heavy sigh, I decided to change out of my comfy clothes. A part of me was still worried about what the text was about, another part was worried about my ruin, peaceful night.
And finally, a call from victor.
PRESENT
When I arrived at the hospital, the place was buzzing with activity. I rushed through the entrance, my heart pounding. I found Victor waiting for me in the hallway, his face grim.
“What happened?” I asked, trying to catch my breath.
He ran a hand through his hair. “A bloody mess, victim's from Lunar and now we're risking a bloody war.” He handed me an almost rumpled paper.
I read through the paper with no picture. “Wolfsbane?” I repeated, shocked, even if I have been told about it. “How did that happen?”
“We’re still trying to figure that out,” He said, his eyes dark with worry. “But it’s bad, Really bad.”
I nodded, feeling a lump form in my throat. “Where’s the other woman?”
“She’s being treated in another room,” He replied. “She’s stable, but she’s not talking much.”
I followed Victor down the hallway to where the defendant was being treated. She had a bandaged head, a cast on her leg and a bloody bandage around her elbow. She looked terrified, her eyes wide and unblinking. I could see the fear and confusion in her gaze.
I approached her slowly. “Hey, I’m Ana. Can you tell me what happened?”
She looked at me and was quiet for a few seconds, then glanced away. “I... I don’t know. It all happened so fast. We were arguing, and then she attacked me. I didn’t mean to, I swear I didn't mean to...” She sounded almost too terrified, her voice breaking.
“It’s okay,” I said gently. “Just tell us what you remember.”
“She had something in her hand,” she replied, her voice low as if she was having a flashback. “A vial. She threw it at me, and it burned. It burned so much. I just... I lost control.”
Victor and I exchanged glances. A vial of wolfsbane? This was worse than I thought.
“Do you know why she had it?” Victor asked.
The woman shook her head. “No, I swear I don’t. We were just arguing. I don’t even remember what it was about. It got so heated, and then...”
“Okay, thank you,” I said, squeezing her hand. “We’re going to figure this out. You’re safe now.”
We left her room, and I turned to Victor. “This is bad. She doesn't even know what the argument was about. And a vial of wolfsbane? Now that's terrible.”
He nodded as we approach Damon, Zara, Selene, Ashley and some pack members. “Same with Natalie? Now, I don't think it's a coincidence.”
