Chapter 29: Chapter 29

MARK'S POV:

"Stay away from me, Jasper!" I yelled at Mr. Weston as he strode up to meet me amidst the recording of the interviewer and media teams present.

Holding Martha’s black box firmly, Mr. Weston met my gaze and warned, "Mark, do not think that I will let you go. If you dare to harm Martha after today, consider this my final warning. I will not hesitate to deal with you." Mr. Weston’s voice was cold, sending shivers crashing down my spine.

"You cannot threaten me. Martha is my fiancée and she will marry me, not you! So stay out of this!" I warned Mr. Weston as he turned back and went to his car.

Mr. Weston carefully placed Martha’s box in his car trunk as if it were a piece of jewelry, then glanced back at me. His black eyes glowed with a golden hue, a threatening warning in them, and I thought I was hallucinating.

What was that? How did Mr. Weston’s eyes flash golden and then fade back to black? I trembled, wondering if I was okay.

"We shall see about that," Mr. Weston smirked and shut his car trunk. He got into his car and drove out of the yard.

"Did you see that?" I asked Elena, turning to face her, but she was too disoriented to notice. Her eyes were filled with tears as her mother was taken away by the police men.

"Mark, what are we going to do? They have arrested my mother. What if Martha wins the case? What do we do? My mom cannot go to jail!" Elena cried as the media team surrounded us.

"Leave, all of you!" I shouted and rushed to unlock the gate.

"Anyone found illegally recording us will have to pay a fine of ten million!" I threatened, and they ran out while I shut the gate on them.

"Come in, babe. Let’s go to the police station. Your mom won’t go to jail," I assured Elena as she continued sobbing, fearing her mother would be imprisoned. After all, Martha had been abused.

Elena sobbed as I unlocked the side door and watched her get into the front passenger seat of my car. I shut the door, moved over to the driver’s side, got in, ignited the engine, and drove out of the residence. Before leaving, I stepped out and locked the gate.

I got back into my car and drove off to the police station.

MARTHA'S POV:

Upon arriving at the police station, the black car glided through the gates and parked.

A policeman got out of the car and came over to pull the side door open for me.

"Come out," he said, briskly.

Getting out of the car, I watched the policeman drag my stepmother out. Holding her handcuffed hands, he led her into the police station building.

As I stepped inside, Sandra shouted, "You are making a mistake. I didn’t do anything wrong to Martha."

"Madam, you must remain silent, or we will add to your punishment," a policeman warned, glaring at Sandra.

"You won’t get away with this, Martha," Sandra growled at me, but the policemen led her away to the cell and locked her up.

The policeman looked at me and said, "Come forward and write down your statement."

Walking to the police desk, I wrote down my statement, and the policeman interrogated me.

"What exactly happened between you and your stepmother? She said that you refused to marry the man your father wanted you to marry before he died. What happened?"

My fists clenched at the question. Looking at the policeman, I narrated, "My father’s death seems suspicious to me, and I want my stepmother to be interrogated. I believe she tampered with my father’s will, and that’s why she wants me to marry Mark, even though he cheated on me."

"We will open a file to investigate your father’s death. But we will need your cooperation. You should trust us to do our best and investigate this properly. For now, your stepmother will not be granted bail until we have completed our investigation."

"Okay, sir." I signed and turned to leave the police station, and I saw Mark arrive with Elena.

Seeing them together pierced my heart, but I was glad that I had broken up with Mark and caught him cheating before our wedding.

"Officers, my mother is innocent. Martha is just framing us," Elena cried and rushed over to the police desk to plead on her mother’s behalf.

"Young lady, we received direct orders from King Kendrick to investigate this matter appropriately. And we would appreciate it if you cooperate with us, unless you want your mother to go to jail. For now, you may leave. We will resume our investigation tomorrow," the policeman dismissed Elena. She turned to me just as I turned to walk away from the police station.

"Martha, what do you aim to achieve? Mom took care of you, and this is how you reward her for all her care?" Elena shouted, but I didn’t turn to listen to her. I made my way out of the police station building. Thankfully, Mark didn’t follow me.

Barrister Williams arrived and rushed up to meet me. "Martha, you cannot send your mother to jail. If you do not want to marry Mark, that’s fine. But you are aware that you cannot claim your father’s inheritance without getting married first."

I met Barrister Williams’ gaze firmly as I responded. "I am aware of that, but this isn’t only about me. I want to reopen the investigation into my father’s mysterious death, and I would appreciate it if you cooperate with me. If you think you can silence me or convince me to drop that case as well, then get ready to join my mother in prison." I met Barrister Williams’ gaze with a challenging glare, and he scowled.

"Martha, your father died from cardiac arrest. You saw the medical report. Withdraw the case and forgive your stepmom. Everything will go back to normal," Barrister Williams called after me as I walked away and exited the police station building.

However, I saw a black car pull into the police station grounds and stop as I was making my way toward the exit.

The door of the car swung open and Mr. Weston got out. His features stood tall and sharp as he dashed up to meet me.

"Martha, are you alright?" Mr. Weston asked, his hands holding my arms with a look of concern on his face.

"Yes, I am fine. I want to go home and rest, but that house doesn’t feel like home anymore," I said, feeling heartbroken.

Mr. Weston pulled off his coat, just as the man I had been with at the hotel had done. Then he draped the coat around my shoulders as the rain began to fall.

"Then I can take you to my place. How about that?" Mr. Weston asked.

I spotted Elena and Mark rushing out of the police station building, peering at us. Seeing Mr. Weston’s hands holding my arms with concern, Mark’s gaze darkened and Elena scowled.

I wanted to refuse, but knowing that I had no one to protect me against my evil stepmother, I nodded and agreed.

"Thank you, sir. Once I find an apartment, I will move out immediately," I said, my voice laced with gratitude, as I didn’t want to inconvenience my boss.

"Martha, you can live with me as long as you like. I will not complain or send you away," Mr. Weston said, his voice sincere. I smiled and walked with him to his car.

The rain began to increase, and Mr. Weston opened the car door for me. Once I slid into the front passenger seat, I watched him carefully shut the door. Then he hopped into the driver’s seat and drove out of the police station. I felt tired from the day’s events, but I was excited that I had finally gotten Sandra arrested for the first time since my father’s death.
