Chapter-37
VALERIE'S POV
"What are you doing mulling over things? I told you to stay in the chambers, didn't I?" Logan caught up with me, and I sighed.
"Don't worry, I am not sad about anything anymore. It's true that I was hurt, but if he loved me, I am sure he would come around," I smiled at Logan, and he hummed.
"The reason I am here is because I am going to the market. Is there anything that you need from there?" He looked at me, and I sighed.
"I don't need anything from there. However, I am really bored here. Can I come with you?" I asked, and he thinned his lips.
"I would've taken you with me, but I can't. Have you forgotten why I brought you here in the first place? It's because your life is in danger out there. What if some vampires come and attack you in the city? It's a place for all. It's not like we can put a hold on them and ban them from coming to a public place, can we?" Logan looked at me, and I nodded in understanding.
"Well, then I guess I don't have anything that I need. You can go and enjoy your trip to the city," I stood from my place, ready to walk inside.
I have been sitting in the backyard of the council clambers for the last three hours. I know it's a big long, but I just couldn't get my head straight.
Even though everything happened right in front of me, I still can comprehend that Ambrose reacted like that.
A part of my heart wants to believe that something is wrong. A guy like Ambrose who was mad for me and promised to do anything, even going to the extent of trading his blood to me just so that I don't leave him, can't change in one night just like that.
The reason could be the mysterious death incident in his pack or because someone fed him something, but my heart wasn't ready to believe he did it all with complete sanity.
Something is missing, and I would have stayed there and confronted him if, according to Logan and the entire council, my life wasn't in danger.
"Valerie," Logan held my hand, and I looked at him, questioningly.
"What is it?" I saw the hesitancy in his eyes and knew he was holding himself back from saying something.
"It's just, can you wear something that would hide your mark? Your mating mark has fangs and blood marks along with the wolves. You know what that means, right?" Logan asked, and I nodded my head.
"Unfortunately, this is the time of the annual ball where many alphas and betas from the entire nation and other countries would be arriving. Not everyone would be thrilled to know there is a hybrid walking around them who can drink their blood anytime. It would have been different if you weren't marked and hadn't tasted blood, but now -" Logan trailed off, and I nodded in understanding.
I know where he was coming from. I wasn't exactly someone people would want their kids around.
As the son of the council head, his responsibility didnt end to me only. It was his duty to ensure everyone felt safe in the council. If I had been in his place, I would've done the same.
"Don't stress it, Logan. I understand you, okay? Don't worry. It doesn't hurt me or anything. You are right. I can't get other alphas to know about my nature," I smiled at him, and he sighed.
"More than that, it's better if this remains a secret for as long as possible. Who knows what kind of alpha would be plotting against me or Ambrose and might think I am related to him and attacks me? I can't afford anything like that when we aren't even a thing anymore," I shrugged.
"I need to leave, or I'll be late for the afternoon meeting. Behave, okay? Also, I think I heard Damian and Beatrice have arrived at the council chambers earlier than expected because they needed to discussion something with dad. Don't lose your temper at them, okay?" Logan looked at me as if I was some naughty kid to whom he was explaining to behave, and I rolled my eyes.
"Why do you always act like I have no better thing to do than creating troubles? I mean I know handling me hasn't been an easy job for you, but at least don't make it look like I am some kind of a naughty kid," I sighed before walking inside.
"Valerie, would you mind coming with me," one of the guards who have been my friends in the council rushed to me, and I raised my brows.
"What is it?" I asked.
"I need help with the horses. You are the only one I know here who can help me with it. The horses are going a bit mad. Last time you handled them pretty well. The alphas will be coming, and most of them love these kind of adventures. The council head had asked us to ensure everything is alright but suddenly the horses started misbehaving. Luckily you are here," the guard said, and I sighed before walking with him to stable.
"What is it?" I looked at the guards, and he pointed at the horses in the further backward garden. The sound of their angry neighing reached my ears, and I immediately knew things weren't pleasant.
The last time I got them under control because I was the one who caused it in the first place.
'Adele? What do you think about it? What can be the issue?'
'Geez, why are you asking me? It's not like I mastered this field,' Adele immediately said, and I pushed down the strong urge to smack her head because I know I can't.
'Aren't you an animal too? No matter how royal you call yourself, or because you are some rare white wolf, at the end of the day, you are an animal. Can't you like, ask them? Be of use for once, will you?' I said, and she scoffed.
'I swear you are using my powers for all the wrong reasons,'
'Yeah, yeah, just get to the work, will you?' I rolled my eyes before nearing the horses, my eyes softening a bit when I saw the scared look in their eyes.
'Valerie. They are scared,' Adele said.
Well, I figured that much. But the question is, why are they so scared?
'It looks like they have seen something traumatizing. More like a person. I don't know if that's the case here, but most animals are scared of vampires and demons because of their high senses and those species drink blood, sometimes from large animals. Demons won't dare to come here, but vampires -'
"They can come because they are after me, and I am here," I completed her sentence, and she nodded with a concerned look.
"Huh, it's okay. We don't need to worry about them. This is the time of the annual ball, and all the alphas would start filling here soon. The vampires won't dare to infiltrate a place full of powerful werewolves unless they are looking for a war," I said, more like consoled myself before going near the horses.
"Hey, calm down. No one's going to harm you. I am here to protect you," I started with my favourite horse, who looked into my eyes.
I asked for Adele's help to tell them they are safe with us and we will protect them. My eyes glowed amber and a hue of blue, or that's what I saw in the horse's eyes.
"There, there, you got it," I caressed it's fur soothingly until it stopped neighing annoyingly. It was a tough task. I got scratched because of the rope and saddle multiple times, but in the end the horses started to calm down.
Other guards also came to help and copied my movements, making me sigh.
"Please feed them and take her to their chambers. It's not good for them to be out here, or they might get annoyed again," I said before turning.
I seriously need to get back to my bed, or I'll become more annoyed than these horses here. I groaned before entering the council chambers, trying my best to stay out of everyone's view so that no one stops me anymore.
"Always poking your nose in everybody's business, and showing you are all it just to gain a little bit of favour and good benefits, no?"
Of course, how could I get a little bit of rest when my dear sister is in the chambers.
"What can I say? Not everyone opens their legs to get that benefit. Some have to work hard and do small things like these. But guess what? At least this one is good to tell others meanwhile, your method -" I trailed off, the anger in her eyes giving me a different kind of satisfaction.
"Valerie, you!" She stepped forward, and I shook my head at her.
"Don't think you are back at the pack, Beatrice," I stepped forward to show her my dominance.
"If I need to remind you, let me tell you, this is the council chamber, the place where I am like an endangered species under protection. God knows what will happen if you lay a finger on me?" I looked into her eyes, amused, and she gritted her teeth at me.
