Chapter 181: Opening Night

Marcus POV

Philadelphia felt different before sunrise.

The streets around the arena were already busy when Marcus pulled into the parking lot.

Production trucks lined the curb while television crews unloaded equipment. Fans wearing Philadelphia jerseys gathered behind the barriers hours before the doors opened.

Opening night carried a different kind of energy. Everyone could feel it. Marcus stepped out of his car, slung his bag over his shoulder, and headed toward the players' entrance.

A security guard held the door open. "Good luck tonight, Marcus."

He smiled."Thanks."

Inside, the arena was quiet, but it wouldn't stay that way for long. Equipment staff moved through the locker room, laying out fresh uniforms and checking every locker one last time.

Trainers wheeled coolers toward the bench while arena staff tested the lights and scoreboard. Everything moved with purpose.

The regular season had finally arrived.

Marcus changed into his practice gear and walked onto the court before most of his teammates arrived.

The seats were empty. The polished hardwood reflected the overhead lights, making the court look untouched. He picked up a ball and began his shooting routine.

No music. No crowd. Only the steady rhythm of the ball bouncing across the floor. A few minutes later, the starting point guard walked onto the court with a basketball tucked under one arm.

"Couldn't wait?"

Marcus caught the pass and knocked down another jumper."Not today."

The guard nodded with a smile."I get it."

They finished shooting together before heading back to the locker room. By then, every locker was occupied. The conversations were quieter than they had been during preseason.

Nobody needed a reminder that this game mattered. The standings started tonight. The head coach walked in just before warmups.

He looked around the room before speaking."Everything you've done up to this point earned you the chance to be here."

His gaze settled on the players one by one."Now we start earning tomorrow."

That was all he said. Nobody clapped.

Nobody shouted. The team stood together, grabbed their warm-up jackets, and walked toward the tunnel.

The sound reached them before the court came into view.Thousands of voices. Music. The arena announcer. The noise rolled through the hallway.

Marcus paused for a moment near the end of the tunnel. Only a few months earlier, he had wondered if he would ever play another NBA game.

That question no longer mattered. His name echoed through the arena during the introductions. Marcus jogged onto the floor, acknowledged the crowd with a quick wave, and joined his teammates at center court.

The ball went up. Opening night was underway. The pace hit immediately. Every possession carried weight. Every mistake had a price.

The opposing team attacked from the opening tip and built an early lead while Philadelphia searched for its rhythm. Marcus missed his first jumper.

On the next possession, a defender knocked the ball loose as he drove into the lane. The turnover turned into an easy basket at the other end.

The head coach called timeout. Nobody panicked."We're rushing," he said. "Trust each other."

Back on the floor, Marcus stopped searching for the perfect play. The simple one was enough. A swing pass created an open three.

A solid screen freed the point guard for a layup. A defensive stop became a fast-break basket. Possession by possession, Philadelphia settled into the game.

Late in the second quarter, Marcus slipped behind his defender on a backdoor cut.

The pass arrived exactly where it needed to be.

He laid the ball softly off the glass before turning to get back on defense. By halftime, the early deficit was gone.

Neither team managed to create much separation after the break. Every run was answered. Every basket mattered. The crowd stayed on its feet through most of the fourth quarter.

With four minutes remaining, the score was tied. The defense trapped Marcus near the top of the key. Only a few weeks earlier, he might have tried to split the double team.

Tonight, he already knew the right play. One quick pass. The ball swung to the corner. Three points. The arena erupted.

On the next defensive possession, Kevin secured the rebound and fired the outlet pass ahead. Marcus slowed the break instead of forcing the issue.

He waited for the defense to collapse before slipping the ball to the rookie cutting down the middle. Another easy basket.

During the next timeout, the head coach looked around the huddle.

"That's Philadelphia basketball."

The team finished the game the same way it had played all night. Together. When the final buzzer sounded, Philadelphia walked away with a seven-point win.

The celebration stayed inside the locker room. Nobody acted like the season had been won. It was one game. A good start.

Nothing more.

After showering and changing, Marcus slung his bag over his shoulder and headed toward the exit. Fans still waited outside the arena.

Some held out jerseys. Others carried basketballs or asked for photos. A young boy wearing Marcus's jersey stepped forward with a marker.

"Can you sign it?"

Marcus smiled, signed the basketball, and handed it back. The boy looked at it like he had just received the greatest gift in the world.

Marcus climbed into his car. His phone buzzed before he started the engine. A message from Coach Reynolds appeared on the screen.

Film tomorrow. Eight o'clock.

Marcus smiled, locked his ph

one, and pulled out of the parking lot. Opening night was over. The season was only beginning.
