Chapter 85: In Cahoots
Aaron had just come back from the restroom and was totally caught off guard by the chaos in the conference room.
He was supposed to be on door duty, but he figured a quick bathroom break wouldn't hurt. He thought James would behave, and the Johnson Group staff wouldn't just storm in. So, he went for it.
But seriously, it had only been two minutes! How did everything go south so fast?
He rushed into the conference room and, without saying a word, yanked Ella out just as she was about to speak.
"You guys carry on," he said, shutting the conference room door behind him.
Ella wasn't having it. She wanted to call out Emily's shameless behavior right there in the conference room.
The ruckus had already drawn a crowd of colleagues. She clapped her hands and shouted, "Who wants to hear about Emily's scandal? I've got the scoop right here."
Aaron felt his job slipping away.
How could the Johnson Group have such a clueless employee?
He lunged forward and clamped his hand over Ella's mouth, stopping her from saying more.
But he didn't expect Ella to bite him. Hard. Despite the pain, he didn't dare let go.
Ella tasted blood and realized what she'd done.
She freaked out a bit, but there was no turning back now. Her eyes narrowed, and she bit down even harder.
Aaron felt sharp pain, like his hand was trapped in a vice.
He glanced at the office and groaned inwardly. For James's sake, he was really putting up with a lot.
Inside the conference room, Emily heard Ella's outburst and was about to go handle it when James grabbed her wrist.
"Go help Olivia with her pregnancy," James said flatly, like it was no big deal.
"Why should I?" Emily snapped at him.
Why on earth should she help Olivia with her pregnancy? Just because he owed Jeremy, did that mean she owed him too?
They were divorced. No ties left.
Plus, after all the times Olivia had schemed against her, why should she help her enemy?
James's face hardened; he knew he was asking a lot.
For some reason, his grip on Emily's hand tightened. Emily, wincing in pain, tried to pull her hand back. When she couldn't, she slapped James hard across the face.
James let go, and Emily yanked her hand back.
She sneered, "Does Olivia know I'm Med Mastermind? If she did, would she still ask for my help? Isn't she scared I might make her miscarry?"
James's face darkened.
Meanwhile, outside, Ella had broken free from Aaron's grip.
She climbed onto a chair, ready to spill the beans, but was cut off by a calm female voice.
"What are you making a scene for? This is a company," Elizabeth said, walking over and glaring at Ella.
Ella shivered under Elizabeth's gaze, swallowing her words.
She wasn't scared of the Smith Group folks because they had no power over the Johnson Group. But Elizabeth was David's assistant, so Ella didn't dare act up in front of her.
Ella's eyes darted around as she thought about Emily's connection with David. She climbed down from the chair and approached Elizabeth, whispering, "Elizabeth, I need to tell you something."
Elizabeth gave her a cold look. "Spit it out."
"Can we talk in private?" Ella whispered.
Elizabeth's arrival had given her a golden chance. She realized that if she made a big scene and embarrassed David, she'd probably be the one getting fired, not Emily.
"Say it here," Elizabeth said firmly.
She could see the scheming in Ella's eyes and was curious about what she would say.
Ella looked troubled but decided to go for it. She leaned in to whisper to Elizabeth, but Elizabeth pushed her away.
"If you have something to say, say it openly. What's with all the secrecy?" Elizabeth snapped, not tolerating such nonsense.
If Ella dared to slander others, she had to be ready to face the consequences.
Ella had been dealing with setbacks since yesterday, and her emotions finally snapped.
She screamed, "I want to say that Emily is flirting with Mr. Smith in the conference room."
Everyone's faces turned grim at this.
Aaron covered his face, feeling helpless. He had done his best.
Elizabeth stood there, her expression unchanged. "Is there anything else?"
Ella looked at Elizabeth, who showed no reaction and didn't seem inclined to inform David. She grabbed Elizabeth's hand. "You need to tell Mr. Johnson and have him fire Emily."
Elizabeth pulled her hand back. "If Emily really did such a thing, she would face the consequences. Why bother Mr. Johnson? He's too busy for this."
Ella blinked, wondering if Elizabeth meant Mr. Johnson wouldn't be biased towards Emily.
"But if you're making baseless accusations, the company won't let you off either," Elizabeth continued, all business.
Ella's face lit up. "There's surveillance in the conference room. We can check the footage."
She suggested this with a barely contained smile.
Elizabeth nodded and publicly pulled up the conference room surveillance.
The footage showed James entering the conference room with Aaron, Emily calling for tea, and Ella suddenly bursting in and causing a scene. It all showed that Emily and James were innocent.
"No, how can this be? How could it not show Emily's shameless act?" Ella couldn't believe her eyes.
When she went in, James was about to kiss Emily. They were clearly flirting in the conference room. How could that not be shown?
The footage must have been tampered with!
She shouted in panic, "The footage has been tampered with! Elizabeth, believe me."
She looked around and saw everyone looking at her with suspicion. Her previous rivals were full of schadenfreude.
Ella felt a breakdown coming.
She approached Elizabeth and tried to grab her hand, but Elizabeth quickly dodged. Ella froze, seeing the deep disgust in Elizabeth's eyes.
"Will you explain it, Ella?" Elizabeth's voice was cold.
Seeing the warning in her eyes, Ella's mind buzzed. She pointed at Elizabeth and shouted, "You're in cahoots with Emily!"
