Chapter 56: Ada's Mate
Ada
It is eerily dark as we slowly make our way through the caves. As I walk next to him, my fingers are tightly entangled in Blake’s fur. I can hear water dripping, but besides that, only our breathing is audible.
“I swear to goddess I’m going to have nightmares like a little child after this.” I mind link Zoe. “I’m going to need a nightlight to fall asleep.”
“I cannot agree more,” Zoe replies. “It’s much too dark for comfort.”
“On the bright side, we found our mates and don’t have to sleep alone anymore,” I grin.
A loud bang echoes through the caves before Zoe can reply and we stop abruptly. I focus on my hearing, but all can hear is muffling in the distance.
“It must be them,” I mind link Zoe.
We move towards the direction of the noise and the closer we get, the lighter it becomes. I keep my breathing low and steady as we move. It is not long until darkness turns into visible tunnels, and I let go of Blake’s fur.
“I did my part,” I recognise Killian’s voice. “Now it’s time you do the same.”
I signal for everyone to stay behind me, and I peek around the corner. There is a huge chamber and Killian and Clyde are standing in front of each other. Behind them are crates and other equipment that I do not recognise. Next to the crates, are Margo, Lola and two men that I assume are Grant and Jackson. One of the men has his arm around an unknown female’s waist. That can only be Jackson and his mate from Opal Moon. Milo and two more men are at Killian’s side.
“You nearly did your part,” Clyde responds. “Ada and her family are still alive, and I haven’t heard any bombs go off.
“Do you think I’m an idi*t?” Killian sneers. “I’m not going to do all your dirty work and then you don’t pay up.”
“And I’m not going to pay you if the job’s not complete,” Clyde hisses.
“Oh, you boys,” Margo huffs as she walks to them. “You’re wasting time with this bickering. Clyde, give him half.”
“Mother, stay out of this,” he sneers.
“Don’t you take that tone with me,” Margo says strictly and Killian chuckles.
“And you,” she turns to Killian and instantly he pulls his face straight. “You dragged your feet with Ada. You should’ve been at her party and convinced her to marry you immediately. Instead, you had to go and kill your Delta.”
“Grant,” Margo turns around and he runs closer to her. “Get Killian half and be quick. At this rate, the sun will be up, and we’ll still be trapped here. You cannot expect Shay to keep them busy the entire night.”
Grant signals to Jackson to assist him and together they drag a crate towards Killian. Once they open the crate, I must steady myself against the wall in surprise. Gold! The stories were true – there truly is gold in these caves and Clyde found it. This is the last puzzle piece! Clyde offered Killian gold in exchange to help him take over Moon Shadow. My family gets killed and Clyde takes over as alpha, while I become Killian’s breeder.
“See,” Margo smiles slyly. “Clyde wasn’t lying, he does have the means to pay you. Now do your part and get us out of this hell hole.”
Killian does not reply as he picks up a piece of gold and smiles satisfied.
“Okay,” he says after a while. “But I’m leaving my men here. I don’t want to risk you running away during the night while I massacre the alpha family.”
“Please,” Clyde snorts. “This stuff is too heavy to run away with.”
“Still,” Killian shrugs. “I’m not taking any chances. You already complicated things with your big mouth. All of this would’ve been over a long time ago if you remembered to give Ada her message after her party.”
“Oh, stop complaining and get it over with,” Margo huffs as she turns around and takes a seat on one of the crates.
“Follow me,” I mind link Zoe and step into the chamber.
“Now, isn’t this charming,” I laugh, and everyone turns toward me in surprise. “All of the culprits together. It makes my job so much easier.”
“Please,” Killian snorts and folds his arms in front of his chest. “I’m not afraid of you.”
“We’re ten against you,” Clyde chuckles. “It’s hardly a fight.”
“Really?” I raise my eyebrows as Zoe and the wolves enter and Clyde takes a step back. “You should learn to count, Clyde.”
“You’re still outnumbered,” Killian smiles devilishly.
“Well, I’m not counting Margo,” I shrug. “Or Lola and Grant.”
“You know nothing of me,” Grant growls angrily.
“I can fight,” Lola yells and takes a step forward.
“Yes, you can,” I smile sweetly. “But you won’t. Not if you want to see Toby or your mother again.”
“Tsk, poor Gladys,” I shake my head. “She’s devastated by what you two had done.”
“Where’s my son?” Lola yells on the verge of hysteria. Her face is deathly pale, and tears start welling in her eyes.
“With your mother,” I pull my shoulders back. “And Gregory.”
Killian and Clyde burst out laughing and I only stare at them with a stoic smile until they calm down.
“Ada, you’re an idi*t,” Clyde chuckles. “After all your talk, I thought you knew Gregory is working with us.”
“No, he’s not,” I shrug nonchalantly. “Gregory is my brother.”
“What?” Killian gapes at me and Clyde pales right in front of my eyes.
“You’re bluffing,” Clyde scoffs. “You’re always bluffing, but this time it won’t work.”
“If you say so,” I sigh bored. “But before you can claim the alpha title, you’ll have to kill Gregory as well. He’s the firstborn and a very angry individual. Good luck getting rid of him. It’s a good thing he likes me. Anyway, as your alpha, I’m charging you with statutory rape, child molestation, theft and treason.”
“I haven’t stolen anything,” Clyde protests. “Except your underwear.”
“And this gold,” I point out. “It belongs to Moon Shadow.”
“You,” I turn to Margo. “I’m charging you with child neglect and endangerment. You did a pi$s poor job of taking care of me.”
“Be my guest,” she snarls. “You’re not making it out of this cave, let alone charge anyone with anything.”
“Margo’s right,” Killian smiles slyly as he takes his phone out. “Time for fireworks.”
He presses a button and the earth starts shaking and dust crumbles to the floor.
“Are you insane?” Clyde yells panicky. “You’re going to kill us all.”
“Relax,” Killian laughs evilly. “We’re safe. But I can’t say the same about the members of Moon Shadow.”
Killian walks towards me and Blake immediately takes a step forward and growls viciously at him.
“Okay,” Killian lifts his hands defensively up in the air. “I just want to talk.”
“All those bombs and not a single casualty,” I roll my eyes. “Moon Shadow has been evacuated, numb nuts.”
“I don’t care,” Killian sneers. “That was to help Clyde, and not for myself. All I want is you. You’re the reason my mate and unborn child died, and I want payback.”
“Yeah, that wasn’t me,” I smile sweetly. “That was Clyde’s squeeze for the night Gregory saw running away. And before you ask, Clyde gave her my hoodie and told her to drop it.”
“You son of a bitch,” Killian is red in the face of anger as he grabs Clyde by the shirt. “You’re the reason they died.”
“But I didn’t start the fire,” Clyde protests. “I swear.”
“Who started the fire, Ada?” Killian asks without taking his eyes off Clyde, and for a moment I am speechless. I do not want to lie, but I do not want to tell the truth either. I might be biased, but Dad made a mistake with devastating consequences. Clyde, on the other hand, made deliberate choices.
“I wasn’t there,” I avoid a direct answer. “But I can prove my version.”
“You bastard,” Killian yells as he extends his claw and thrust it into Clyde’s gut. Lola starts sobbing uncontrollably as Margo screams bloody murder. Clyde’s eyes go big, and he makes a gurgling sound before he drops to the floor.
“No!” Margo shrieks as she runs to him and kneels by his side.
“My boy, my baby boy,” she cries as she cradles Clyde’s head on her lap.
Emotionless I stare at the scene in front of me. I am not sorry Clyde is dead and I have no pity for Margo’s pain. All I feel is a relief that he is dead.
“You killed him,” Margo points a finger accusingly at Killian.
“That was the idea,” Killian sneers as he turns to me.
“And you,” his eyes are crazy with anger. “I’m going to kill you and wipe out your entire pack.”
“Do try,” I stare at him coldly as I take a threatening step forward. “I’ve been dying to kick your ass.”
