Chapter 173: Diamond Dies in a Car Crash
Eleanor followed Diamond out of the building. The moment Diamond stepped outside, several bodyguards grabbed her and dragged her into a car.
Eleanor rushed to the parking garage and drove after them. She followed all the way to the Monroe family estate.
She didn't dare get too close. From a distance, she watched the bodyguards pull Diamond from the car. Diamond struggled and fought, but she was no match for them.
They dragged her inside like a dead dog.
The bodyguards threw Diamond onto the living room floor without a shred of gentleness.
Before she could catch her breath, a pair of expensive leather shoes stopped right in front of her face. Diamond looked up in terror, too shocked to even cry.
"Uncle..."
Slap!
Hunter's eyes were bloodshot with fury. He backhanded her across the face. "You're the one who killed Janet. You worthless piece of trash. I'm going to kill you myself!"
He grabbed Diamond by the throat and squeezed. His grip was so tight it felt like he might snap her neck.
Diamond's face turned red. She clawed at his hands, but the lack of oxygen left her too weak to fight back.
Just when she thought she was going to die, Hunter let go.
Air rushed back into her lungs. Diamond collapsed on the floor, gasping desperately.
Once she recovered slightly, she crawled on the ground and begged through her sobs. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to! It was my father's death anniversary. Janet kept provoking me. She wanted me to give her my father's belongings. When I refused, she stood in front of my car..."
"So you ran her over?" Pamela screamed as she limped down the stairs. Her face still bore scars from her own car accident. She swung her cane and brought it down hard on Diamond's body.
"You killed Janet over your father's worthless junk? How can you be so evil? Why didn't you die instead?" Pamela kicked Diamond again and again.
Diamond curled into a ball on the floor, shielding her head. "I'm sorry. I know I was wrong. Please forgive me! Janet is gone. From now on, I can be your daughter..."
No matter how much Diamond begged, Pamela didn't stop. She poured out all her hatred and grief through her fists and feet.
Only when Diamond was nearly unconscious did Hunter finally pull Pamela back.
"Why are you stopping me? I want to beat this murderer to death!" Pamela screamed.
Hunter had calmed down somewhat. His eyes were cold as he looked at Diamond trembling on the floor. "We investigated for so long and never found Janet's killer. Why did an anonymous email suddenly send us the video today? Who in this city has the power to cover up something like this?"
Pamela's anger faded as she processed his words. Her brow furrowed. "You mean Alexander covered this up?"
"He's the only one capable of it. I'm guessing the old man knew too and ordered Alexander to keep it quiet."
Pamela was stunned. "Janet was his granddaughter too! This woman killed Janet, and he helped hide it? Are you even Alistair's real son? Why does he always favor your brother's family?"
Hunter gritted his teeth. His eyes reddened. The old man's blatant favoritism had always hurt, no matter how much he tried to hide it.
"Well, the old man is dead now. He died protecting his precious firstborn's family, and his beloved granddaughter still didn't get to marry Alexander. I'd call that karma." Hunter paused, a calculating look crossing his face. "Alexander thinks he can send us this evidence anonymously and walk away clean? Janet was my only daughter. Everyone involved in her death will pay!"
"What are you going to do?" Pamela asked.
Hatred twisted Hunter's features. "Keep this worthless woman alive for now. She's still useful. I'm going to set a trap for Alexander."
...
Eleanor waited outside for nearly half an hour. Just as she was about to leave, Diamond came running out of the estate.
Eleanor was too far away to see Diamond's face clearly, but she recognized the clothes.
She wondered what had happened. Diamond had been dragged in so violently, yet here she was running free.
Diamond jumped into a car and sped off.
Eleanor followed, curious about what Diamond was up to.
But as Diamond drove through an intersection, a truck came barreling from the left and slammed straight into her car.
The accident happened right before Eleanor's eyes. She slammed on the brakes, watching in horror as the truck hit Diamond's car and kept going. It dragged the wreckage for dozens of meters before finally stopping.
Eleanor sat frozen in shock. When she finally snapped out of it, she grabbed her phone and called the police.
Officers arrived quickly and determined the truck's brakes had failed. The driver of the smaller car was pronounced dead at the scene.
It had all happened so fast. Eleanor couldn't process it. She watched paramedics load Diamond's body onto a stretcher. A white sheet covered her, but judging from the state of the car, the body underneath had to be unrecognizable.
Eleanor stared at the scene in a daze. Almost without thinking, she walked toward the stretcher and reached for the sheet. She wanted to see the face of the woman who had killed Luna.
A police officer stopped her. "You can't do that."
Eleanor snapped back to reality. "Sorry."
The paramedics loaded Diamond's body into the ambulance and drove away.
Eleanor drove home in a fog. She wrapped herself in a blanket and curled up on the couch, replaying the crash over and over in her mind.
She didn't know how long she sat there before Alexander came home. He spotted her immediately and pulled her into his arms.
"Why are you back?" she asked.
"I heard you witnessed a car accident. I was worried, so I came to check on you." He kissed her forehead and rubbed her back gently, trying to calm her.
"Did you know Diamond is dead?" Eleanor asked numbly.
"Yes, I know."
"She's dead. Just like that. It happened so fast. I almost can't believe it."
"The Monroe family probably took care of it. Quick and clean."
Eleanor pulled back and looked into his eyes. "What was that evidence you had on her? It made Hunter kill her on the spot."
Alexander went quiet. He took her hand and traced circles on her palm. After a long pause, he sighed. "I owe you an apology. I've been keeping something from you. Remember when that little girl at the hospital said she gave me a memory card? I denied it, but I did receive it."
