Chapter 319

Nina’s POV

The damp chill of the underground cavern clung to my skin like a second layer of clothing, but standing inches away from Nikolai, all I could feel was the overwhelming heat radiating from his massive body.

The water from the natural pool below lapped softly against the dark stone ledges, casting dancing, emerald reflections across the high ceiling of the cave. Out beyond the hidden shelf where we stood, the roaring waterfall crashed down into the ocean mist, a heavy curtain of thunder shielding us from the organ hunters searching the island above.

I looked up at his face. The angular jaw, the rough stubble, the sharp line of his nose, and those dark, unyielding eyes that had seen more horror, blood, and quiet destruction than any single human soul should ever have to carry.

For so long, I had seen him only as a cold, terrifying wall. A lethal weapon built of iron muscle, sharp tactical calculations, and unbroken silence. I had pushed against his coldness. I had screamed at his indifference. I had mistaken his emotional isolation for arrogance, completely unaware of the brutal, blood-soaked wreckage that lay buried beneath his chest.

The image of his past pressed heavily against my mind. The dark room in Saint Petersburg. The sound of a telephone call breaking a warm family dinner. The silent murder plot in a high-tech hospital ward. The twin brother who had stolen his face, his lover, and even his name, leaving him to bleed out emotionally on the frozen wooden floor of a mountain monastery.

He had not just survived a hard life. He had been ripped apart, piece by piece, by the very people who were supposed to love him.

A heavy, aching knot formed in my throat, hot tears rushing to my eyes before I could stop them. My heart squeezed so hard it felt as if it were breaking inside my ribs.

Without thinking, without asking for permission, I stepped straight across the narrow gap separating us and wrapped my arms tightly around his thick waist.

I buried my face directly into the center of his broad, bare chest. His skin was cool from the mist, but beneath the surface, his heart was beating in a slow, heavy, powerful rhythm. Thump. Thump. Thump.

Nikolai went instantly rigid.

His entire body locked up like solid steel beneath my hands. He did not pull away, but he did not wrap his arms around me either. He simply stood there like an ancient, immovable statue, his breath catching in his lungs as if my sudden physical closeness were a strange, unknown language he had never learned to read.

I pressed myself closer, digging my fingers into the tight muscles of his back, squeezing him with every ounce of strength left in my exhausted body.

"I am sorry," I whispered, my voice trembling and thick with raw emotion against his chest. "I am so sorry you had to go through all of that, Nikolai."

He remained completely still, his chest rising and falling in deep, measured breaths. "Nina—"

"No, let me say it," I interrupted softly, blinking back the tears that were spilling down my cheeks and soaking into his skin. I squeezed him tighter, wishing I could somehow absorb a fraction of the heavy, black weight he had carried all these years alone. "You are such a strong man. You carried the weight of your entire family on your shoulders while the whole world was trying to tear you apart. You protected your mother. You protected your brother even when he was plotting to destroy you. You built everything you have out of absolute nothing."

I lifted my head slightly, resting my chin against his chest so I could look up into his dark, unreadable eyes.

"You are not cold because you are heartless," I murmured, my voice filled with a deep, fierce reverence. "You are cold because you gave everything away until there was nothing left for yourself. And you still kept standing. You are the strongest man I have ever known."

Nikolai looked down at me, his dark eyes wide and strangely shadowed in the dim green light of the cave. For three long seconds, the icy barrier behind his gaze cracked just enough for me to see the raw, exposed soul of the boy who had lost his father on a winter night twenty-two years ago.

He slowly lifted one broad, heavy hand, his long fingers gently cupping the back of my neck. His thumb brushed against my cheekbone, wiping away a stray tear with a soft, surprisingly tender touch.

"My mother is still alive," Nikolai said softly, his deep voice rumbling low in his chest, carrying a quiet, rare warmth that made my breath catch. "She lives in a private, high-security medical estate outside Tokyo. The neural treatment is slow, but she wakes up for brief moments now. She remembers my voice."

I smiled through my tears, my heart swelling with a bittersweet ache. "She does?"

"Yes," Nikolai replied, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my knees feel weak. "I will take you to Japan to see my mom someday."

The promise hung in the cool air between us, heavy and real. It was the first time he had ever spoken about a future, the first time he had ever offered me a piece of his real life outside the dark, violent world of weapons, blood, and syndicate wars.

"Yes," I breathed out, nodding my head rapidly as fresh tears spilled over my eyelashes. "Yes, Nikolai. I would love that. I want to meet her."

Nikolai looked down at my face for a moment longer, his broad thumb resting gently against the side of my jaw. Then, slowly and deliberately, his posture shifted. The subtle warmth in his eyes receded, replaced once again by that sharp, analytical clarity that governed his entire existence.

He gently slid his hands down to my shoulders, pushing me back just a few inches until a clear boundary was re-established between our bodies.

"The hug is alright, Nina," Nikolai said, his voice returning to its usual flat, level rumble. "And I hope you do understand why I cannot be with you."

I froze, the warmth in my chest instantly plunging into a cold, confused panic. I looked at his handsome, unreadable face, my brow furrowing tightly. "What? Nikolai, what are you talking about?"

"I cannot keep being the second option," Nikolai stated plainly, his dark eyes burning into mine with an honesty so sharp it felt like a physical slap. "If you are sure you want me, then you will let me know."

I let out a soft, frustrated sigh, stepping right back into his space and placing my hands against his chest once more. "But I do want you! How can you stand there and say that after everything we have been through on this island? I am standing right here, Nikolai!"

Nikolai did not back down. He did not pull away. He simply looked down at me with an eerie, terrifying level of psychological precision.

"Yes," Nikolai said smoothly, his tone laced with a dry, dangerous edge. "You want me. Dante. And Enzo."

I gasped, the air completely rushing out of my lungs as my mouth fell open in utter shock. My hands went limp against his chest, my eyes widening to the size of saucers as my face flushed with a sudden, burning heat.

I couldn't speak. I couldn't formulate a single sentence. The sheer audacity, the terrifying accuracy, and the absolute lack of shame in his voice left me completely paralyzed.

Nikolai gave me a small, dark smirk, one corner of his handsome mouth twitching upward for a fraction of a second.

He turned away from me, turning his broad back as he walked slowly toward the jagged, wet edge of the cliff side overlooking the abyss.

"I am that observant," he said calmly, his deep voice carrying easily over the roaring thunder of the waterfall. "Especially when it comes to bugs that pick my interest."

He stopped at the very brink of the precipice, the sharp wind from the open sea howling through the mouth of the cavern, whipping his dark hair across his forehead. He turned his head slightly, looking back over his shoulder at my frozen, speechlessly blushing form.

"So Nina," Nikolai said smoothly, his dark eyes glinting with a dangerous, playful edge, "stop trying to fuck me, and let us focus on getting back to the real world."

Before I could even find my voice to yell at him, Nikolai stepped back toward me in one smooth, lightning-fast motion. He reached out, took my chin gently between his fingers, and leaned down, pressing a soft, warm, lingering kiss directly onto the center of my forehead.

The tenderness of the touch sent a shiver straight down my spine.

Then, without giving me a single second to react, Nikolai spun around on his heel and sprinted full speed toward the open edge of the cliff.

My heart instantly violently dropped into my stomach.

"Nikolai, no!" I screamed, my voice echoing wildly off the damp stone walls as my legs moved on pure instinct, rushing forward with my hands outstretched.

He did not hesitate. He did not slow down. He launched his broad, heavy body directly off the edge of the sheer rock drop, plunging straight out into the roaring white mist and the wild, churning ocean waters hundreds of feet below.

It happened so suddenly, so violently, that my entire world went completely black at the edges.

"Nikolai!" I shrieked at the top of my lungs, slamming my hands against the icy wet rock at the edge of the drop, tears blinding my eyes as I stared down into the terrifying, crashing abyss below. "Don’t you dare commit suicide and make me watch!"
